How many gold bars were found, and what happened to them?
The reported count depends on which record and stage of the case is meant. During a May search of Rush’s Virginia home, FBI agents reportedly seized gold bars, about $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches. An earlier FBI affidavit, as reported by CBS News, counted approximately 303 bars and estimated their value at more than $40 million. The later plea agreement identifies 298 bars for forfeiture, valued at about $46 million including purchase fees, according to The Washington Post’s October 6 report on the plea documents.

The reviewed reporting does not explain the difference between the earlier count and the later forfeiture count. The figures should therefore be treated as separate records, not as a reconciled inventory.
What assets did Rush agree to forfeit?
Rush agreed to forfeit at least $194 million in assets under the plea agreement. The reported package includes 298 gold bars, two BMWs, 35 luxury watches and four Florida homes. The $194 million is the aggregate value of varied assets subject to forfeiture; it is not the value of the gold alone, nor a claim that the entire amount was seized as cash.

What did prosecutors say about a CIA source?
At the plea hearing, prosecutors disclosed that Rush admitted telling a foreign government official who was not entitled to receive it about the existence and descriptive information of a U.S. government clandestine human source. The Washington Post reported that the government was not publicly identified and that prosecutors did not publicly allege Rush was paid for the disclosure.

The plea filing says the disclosure could endanger the source and U.S. officers working with that person, and could undermine the government’s ability to recruit sources who depend on assurances of secrecy. This disclosure was reported as an admission in the plea materials; the count Rush pleaded guilty to was wire fraud.

How did the alleged scheme work?
According to the plea account, Rush used false claims of classified authority to make expenditures difficult to verify. He directed and approved spending, while contractors and intermediaries carried out transactions that ultimately placed assets under his possession or control. The filing describes the property and gold purchases as separate transactions and intermediaries serving the same broader scheme.
The reported case also raises questions about how the purported activities were approved. The October court reporting says CIA processes effectively allowed Rush to act as his own expenditure-approval official, while he invoked classification and compartmentation to impede checks on the activities. The CIA reportedly referred the matter to the FBI and had begun a review of its controls; that review was still ongoing in the cited reporting.

What is known about Rush’s background and the next court date?
The Washington Post reported that Rush joined the CIA around 2009 and most recently served as a senior executive in its Directorate of Science and Technology. Plea coverage also reports that he falsely claimed degrees from Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which he did not attend, and fraudulently collected about $77,000 in military leave after his Navy Reserve discharge in 2015. Earlier FBI allegations included false claims about pilot service.
