EVgo says it expects to unveil a next-generation U.S. charging design and begin deployment in 2027, with peak power of up to 750kW and an estimate of around 10 minutes for the fastest-charging vehicles in the U.S. market. BYD’s China-focused Super e-Platform is rated at 1,000kW for compatible vehicles and was promoted as adding 400km of range in five minutes. That makes BYD’s stated peak about 1.33 times EVgo’s—not twice as high—and neither figure describes what every EV will receive at a charger.

What EVgo has announced for 2027

In its September 29, 2026 announcement, EVgo described a next-generation U.S. charging architecture capable of delivering up to 750kW. The company expects to unveil the final design and begin deployment in 2027. That is a planned start, not evidence that 750kW stations will be available nationwide in 2027.

EVgo estimates that the fastest-charging vehicles in the U.S. market could charge in around 10 minutes. It does not present that as a guaranteed session time for all vehicles or all drivers. The actual result depends on a vehicle’s charging capability and settings, the battery’s condition and temperature, ambient temperature, and the battery’s starting state of charge.

Connectors and power sharing

EVgo says every station in this architecture will use NACS connectors and dynamic power sharing. The system is designed to adjust each dispenser’s output to the needs of the vehicle connected to it, rather than requiring drivers to seek out a stall with a particular power rating. A NACS connector identifies the connection type; it does not mean a vehicle can accept 750kW. The car’s own charging limits still matter.

How EVgo’s system compares with BYD’s 1MW platform

Comparison EVgo next-generation architecture BYD Super e-Platform
Peak charging power Up to 750kW, according to EVgo’s September 2026 announcement. 1,000kW (1MW) mass-produced charging power, according to BYD’s March 2025 announcement. BYD also says its liquid-cooled terminal can deliver up to 1,360kW; that terminal maximum is distinct from the stated 1MW system rating.
Charging-time claim Around 10 minutes for the fastest-charging vehicles in the U.S. market, as estimated by EVgo; vehicle and battery conditions affect the time. 400km of added range in five minutes for compatible Super e-Platform vehicles, as claimed by BYD in 2025.
Vehicle fit EVgo’s estimate concerns the fastest-charging U.S. vehicles; the announcement does not say every EV can take 750kW. The five-minute range claim applies to compatible vehicles and specified charging equipment, not every EV using a high-power station.
Connector or electrical details EVgo says the architecture will use NACS connectors. Its announcement does not state a voltage-and-current pair for the system. BYD describes 1,000V and 1,000A for its 1MW charging system.
Power allocation and cooling Dynamic power sharing is designed to adjust dispenser output to the connected vehicle’s needs. BYD describes a liquid-cooled charging terminal. The cited announcement does not state a comparable dynamic power-sharing feature.
Rollout described Final design unveiling and deployment are expected in 2027; EVgo has not described this as an immediate nationwide launch. BYD announced a plan for more than 4,000 Megawatt Flash Charging stations in China in 2025. That is a company rollout target, not a count of stations confirmed operating.

The figures above come from EVgo’s September 2026 announcement and BYD’s March 2025 Super e-Platform announcement; BYD also repeated its 1MW and five-minute range claims in a 2025 filing. They describe different systems, vehicles, and charging claims, so the power ratings alone cannot establish which will add more range to a particular car in a particular session.

Is BYD’s megawatt charging twice as fast?

No—not by peak power. A 1,000kW rating is about 1.33 times 750kW, or roughly one-third higher, rather than double. BYD’s separate 1,360kW maximum terminal-output figure is not the same as the 1MW mass-produced system rating, and neither number by itself predicts a driver’s charging time.

Power is the rate at which energy can be supplied, while added range depends on how much energy the vehicle stores and how efficiently it uses that energy. A vehicle may also accept less than a station’s peak output. Its charging curve, battery size and thermal management, along with state of charge and temperature, affect the power it can take during a session. That is why BYD’s 400km-in-five-minutes claim is tied to compatible Super e-Platform vehicles and specified equipment, and EVgo’s around-10-minute estimate is limited to the fastest-charging U.S. vehicles.

What the rollout claims mean for drivers

In the United States

EVgo’s announcement points to a future architecture: design details are expected in 2027, alongside the start of deployment. It does not establish when a particular site will open, how many stations will be built that year, or that all locations will offer 750kW. EVgo said in 2026 that it operated more than 1,200 fast-charging locations across 47 U.S. states, but that network figure does not mean those existing locations use the announced 750kW design.

In China

BYD’s 2025 plan for more than 4,000 megawatt charging stations is specifically a planned BYD rollout in China. It should not be read as evidence that every public charger in China is megawatt-class, or that the target had already been met. BYD’s announcement describes its own platform, terminal, and compatible vehicles.

What to check before expecting a very fast charge

  • Vehicle capability: Check the vehicle’s stated maximum DC charging power and whether it is compatible with the relevant charging system. A connector that fits does not raise the vehicle’s acceptance limit.
  • Charging conditions: Battery temperature, ambient temperature, starting state of charge, and vehicle settings can change charging speed.
  • The station’s actual service: A peak rating is a maximum capability, not a guarantee that the vehicle will receive that power throughout the session. EVgo’s dynamic power sharing is intended to match output to vehicle needs.
  • Range claims: Treat added-range figures as claims for the specified compatible vehicle and equipment, not as a universal conversion from kilowatts to miles or kilometers.
