Verdict: Everyday Insurance Standard (renters) is a sum-insured contents policy with a broad list of insured events and up to $20 million of renters liability, but it does not include accidental-damage cover. Waiting periods, excesses, exclusions and relatively low sublimits for portable, outdoor and valuable items can materially reduce what a claim pays. Treat the nominated contents amount, the policy schedule and the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) as the decision points—not the peril list alone.
The exact current premium and CHOICE’s renters rating are not publicly shown in the accessible review, so you must obtain a quote using your address, contents value, excess and optional covers before deciding whether the policy is good value.

Everyday Insurance Standard renters policy at a glance
| Question | What the public review establishes | What you still need to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Policy type | Contents-only insurance designed for renters, with a nominated sum insured. | The amount you should nominate and whether every important possession fits within item limits. |
| Provider and underwriting | CHOICE identifies it as a white-label policy supplied by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. | The insurer, wording version, eligibility and conditions shown on your current quote, schedule and PDS. |
| Liability | Up to $20 million for people named on the policy and their family members living with them, for incidents in Australia. | All liability exclusions, conditions and the excess that applies to your claim. |
| Accidental damage | Not included in the reviewed Standard renters policy. | Whether an optional extension is available and what it covers, if you need it. |
| Weather waiting period | 72 hours for bushfire, flood, and storm or rainwater cover. | The exact start-time rule and any additional event-specific conditions in your documents. |
| Public rating and price | CHOICE’s exact renters review keeps its expert rating, recommendation, cover score, price score and customer-satisfaction fields for members. | Your own quote and a like-for-like comparison with other policies. |
Everyday Insurance’s renters guidance says contents-only cover is intended for unfixed possessions such as furniture, clothing, electrical goods and some jewellery. It is not building insurance: the rental property’s structure and the landlord’s fixtures are generally a separate responsibility.
What you are buying—and what you are not
This is a sum-insured contract. You choose a maximum contents amount, and the policy can pay no more than that amount (subject to individual limits, excesses and the wording) for covered loss or damage. The insurer does not automatically calculate the replacement cost of everything you own.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the nominated amount matters
Make an inventory room by room, including items in cupboards, storage cages, balconies and shared areas that the wording treats as part of your contents. Price each item at the cost of replacing it under the policy’s replacement rules, not what you could sell it for today. Include everyday items that are easy to forget: cookware, linen, shoes, tools, small appliances, monitors, game consoles and work equipment.
After totaling the inventory, allow for purchases you expect to make during the policy period. A sum insured that is too low can leave you underinsured; a high amount raises the premium. The schedule and PDS determine how the insurer applies the sum insured and any automatic reinstatement or claim-payment provisions, so do not assume a claim simply restores the full amount.
People covered by the policy
Check that every regular occupant who should be insured is named or falls within the definition of an insured family member living with you. A housemate, partner or visiting relative may not have the same status under the wording. Liability cover is specifically described for people named on the policy and their family members who live with them, and for incidents in Australia.
Events the Standard policy lists as covered
CHOICE’s public specifications list the following insured events. Each is subject to the policy’s definitions, exclusions, excesses and limits:
| Listed event | Important qualification |
|---|---|
| Theft | Theft by residents or people you invite is excluded in the examples given by CHOICE. Evidence of forcible entry and other conditions may also be required. |
| Fire and bushfire | A 72-hour waiting period applies to bushfire cover; the PDS controls definitions and exclusions. |
| Flood | A 72-hour waiting period applies. The flood excess is the greater of $500 or your basic excess. |
| Storm and rainwater | A 72-hour waiting period applies. Damage caused by gradual deterioration or water seepage is excluded in the review’s examples. |
| Tsunami | Covered only as defined and subject to the applicable excess and exclusions. |
| Explosion | Covered subject to the wording’s definition and claim conditions. |
| Earthquake | Earth movement or vibration claims have event-link and timing conditions described below. |
| Malicious damage or vandalism | Intentional damage by an insured person or other excluded party will not become covered merely because it is described as vandalism. |
| Riot, civil commotion and industrial unrest | Apply only within the policy definitions and limits. |
| Impact damage | The object, cause and resulting damage must fit the policy wording. |
| Sudden accidental escape of specified liquids | Gradual leakage, poor maintenance and similar conditions are excluded; the liquid and circumstances must meet the wording. |
The practical distinction is between a listed peril and a payable claim. A storm may be listed, for example, while damage caused by long-term roof deterioration or seepage is excluded. Keep maintenance records and report a loss promptly so the cause can be established.
Weather, earth movement and waiting-period traps
The 72-hour rule
For bushfire, flood and storm or rainwater, the review lists a 72-hour waiting period. A policy bought shortly before a known weather event may therefore provide no benefit for that event. Read the schedule to identify when the period starts—such as policy commencement or a later increase in cover—and whether a change to the address or sum insured restarts a period.

Flood excess
For a flood claim, the excess is the greater of $500 or the basic excess. If your basic excess is $1,000, for example, the greater amount is $1,000; if it is $400, the stated $500 minimum applies. Your quote and schedule govern the actual basic excess.

CHOICE reports conditions tying earth movement or vibration claims to a covered event and a 168-hour window. That is not a blanket guarantee for every crack or movement. Document when damage appeared, preserve photographs and obtain professional reports where needed to show the relationship to the insured event.
Sea-related exclusions
Storm surge and action of the sea are not covered according to the review. Coastal renters should distinguish flood as defined in the policy from seawater pushed inland by a storm. Ask the insurer to explain the boundary for your address before relying on the policy for coastal inundation.
Exclusions that can defeat an otherwise plausible claim
The public review highlights several exclusions that are easy to miss when reading only the insured-events list:
- Theft by residents or invited people: a loss caused by someone who lives with you or whom you invite may be excluded.
- Gradual deterioration and seepage: storm or flood cover does not turn long-term water penetration, wear or building defects into an insured event.
- Gradual leakage and lack of maintenance: a slow leak or neglected repair is different from a sudden accidental escape of a covered liquid.
- Accidental damage: dropping, knocking over or otherwise accidentally damaging an item is not covered under the reviewed Standard policy unless a separate extension is available and selected.
- Unoccupied premises: if the home is unoccupied for more than 60 days, insurer approval is required and additional conditions apply.
The full exclusions, definitions and claim duties in the current PDS override a short summary. If you cannot identify the clause that answers a particular risk—such as a pet damaging a sofa, a laptop spill or a guest taking property—ask for a written explanation before purchasing.

Liability cover: useful, but not unlimited protection
The review lists legal liability up to $20 million for incidents in Australia involving people named on the policy and their family members living with them. This can respond to third-party injury or property damage for which an insured person is legally liable, but the limit is not an automatic payment and does not cover every dispute.

Liability claims remain subject to the policy’s exclusions, definitions, cooperation requirements and excess. Intentional acts, business activities or vehicles may be treated differently. Tell the insurer about the actual occupants and activities at the rental, and never admit liability or agree to a settlement before following the claims instructions.
Item limits and optional covers you must price separately
Several categories have sublimits. These can apply even when your overall contents sum insured is much higher. CHOICE’s publicly listed figures are:
| Category | Publicly listed limit | Excess or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Unspecified portable contents (optional) | Overall limit selected from $2,500 to $5,000; up to $1,000 per item | $100 excess listed for this option |
| Open-air contents | Up to $4,000 overall; $1,000 per item | Location and policy conditions apply |
| Jewellery | Up to $2,500 overall; $1,000 per item or collection | Valuation, security and other conditions may apply |
| Artworks and collections | Up to $2,500 overall with shared limits | Definitions and valuation requirements apply |
| Visitors’ contents | Up to $500 | Only within the visitor-contents definition |
| Specially listed valuables (optional) | Amount is selected for each listed item in the schedule | Item must be accepted and shown on the schedule |
| Motor burnout (optional) | Available as an optional cover according to the review | Age, repairability and other PDS conditions determine payment |
These are policy-specific figures, not a promise that every quote will show the same selection. A $3,000 camera, for instance, cannot be fully protected by a $1,000-per-item portable limit unless it is accepted as a specially listed valuable with an adequate scheduled amount. Ask whether a collection is treated as one item or several and whether accessories count toward the limit.

Phones, cameras, laptops, bicycles and sporting equipment often leave the home. Confirm whether the optional unspecified portable cover applies away from the address, during travel and in a vehicle, and whether theft requires visible forcible entry. Outdoor furniture and equipment may fall under open-air contents with the $4,000 overall and $1,000-per-item limits.
Jewellery and collections
The listed $2,500 jewellery total and $1,000 per item or collection can be inadequate for a single engagement ring or a watch. Obtain current valuations and check whether the policy requires a safe, alarm or proof of ownership. Collections can share a single cap, so count the whole collection rather than only its most expensive piece.
Replacement terms and the 60-day vacancy condition
The review says new-for-old replacement applies, but identifies exceptions including clothing, shoes and linen that are out of use or stored away, and computers more than four years old. “New for old” therefore does not mean every item is replaced with a brand-new equivalent regardless of age or use. Keep receipts, model numbers and photographs so the insurer can establish what was owned and its condition.

If the home will be unoccupied for over 60 days, obtain the insurer’s approval before leaving. Conditions may cover inspections, security, utilities or notification. A long trip, hospital stay or gap between leases can trigger this rule; do not assume a neighbour checking the property satisfies it.
What is known about price and CHOICE’s rating
No current premium for a standard address and assumptions is published in the accessible renters review. Premiums vary with location, construction, claims history, sum insured, excess, optional covers and security. Comparing two dollar figures is meaningful only when those inputs match.
CHOICE’s exact Everyday Insurance Standard (renters) review displays the product specifications but keeps its expert rating, recommendation, cover score, price score and customer-satisfaction fields for members. A separate CHOICE supermarket home-insurance comparison reports a 48% cover score and 56% price score for Everyday Insurance Standard home cover in its 2026 comparison context. Those percentages are for the home-policy comparison, not this renters product, and must not be substituted for a renters rating.
In that home-insurance article, CHOICE senior data analyst Daniel Graham said, “There are many policies in our review that outperform both of these on both cost and level of cover.” The statement concerns the Standard and Comprehensive Everyday home products in that comparison, not a measured result for the renters policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a quote fairly
- Set one contents amount. Use the same room-by-room inventory and replacement assumptions for every insurer.
- Match the address and occupancy. Enter the same postcode, dwelling type, security details and number of residents.
- Match the excess. A lower premium with a higher basic excess is not an equivalent offer; include the flood excess rule.
- Match optional covers. Add portable contents, specially listed valuables, motor burnout and any accidental-damage extension where available.
- Check the limits. Compare jewellery, collections, outdoor property, visitors’ contents and any per-item caps against your inventory.
- Read the event exclusions. Pay particular attention to theft by invited people, seepage, gradual leakage, sea action, waiting periods and vacancy conditions.
- Read the current PDS and schedule. Everyday Insurance’s guide dated 14 January 2025 says cover is subject to eligibility, terms, limits and exclusions and directs customers to the PDS and Target Market Determination. The wording attached to your quote takes priority over an older guide or review.
- Obtain a second and third quote. CHOICE advises quote shopping with policies offering similar or identical cover; it names Real Insurance and Australian Seniors as comparison candidates for Everyday Insurance. Verify that each quote is current and that any claimed cover similarity still applies to the same policy version.
Claim examples: where the Standard cover can and cannot help
Storm damages a television through a sudden roof breach
If the loss occurs after the applicable waiting period and the cause fits the storm definition, contents cover may respond. If an assessor finds years of roof deterioration or gradual seepage, the exclusion can apply. The television’s payment is also subject to your contents sum insured, excess, age-related replacement exception and any item limit.

A four-year-old computer is destroyed by fire
Fire is listed, but the new-for-old exception for computers older than four years can affect the settlement basis. Keep the purchase date and model details, and ask how the insurer will calculate the amount.
A visitor trips over your belongings
The legal-liability section may be relevant if an insured person is legally liable and the incident is in Australia. Notify the insurer promptly, preserve evidence and follow its instructions rather than admitting fault or promising payment.
A coastal rental is inundated by storm surge
The review says storm surge and action of the sea are not covered. Do not treat that loss as ordinary flood without confirming the policy definition for the address.

Who should consider this policy—and who should look more closely
It may suit you if
- You need contents-only insurance rather than cover for a building you do not own.
- Your belongings fit comfortably within the nominated sum insured and the published category limits.
- You can accept named-peril cover and do not need accidental damage for ordinary mishaps.
- You value a high stated liability limit and are willing to comply with the waiting-period, excess and maintenance conditions.
Look for a different configuration if
- You frequently take expensive electronics, bicycles, instruments or jewellery outside the home and the portable or per-item caps are too low.
- You want cover for drops, spills and other accidental damage.
- You live in a coastal or flood-exposed location where storm surge or action of the sea is a major concern.
- You expect the home to be vacant for more than 60 days and cannot meet the approval conditions.
These are needs-based tests, not a blanket recommendation for or against the policy. The correct choice depends on the current wording and your inventory.
Before you buy: a document-and-quote checklist
- Download the current PDS, policy schedule and Target Market Determination.
- Record the policy version and quote date; older reviews and guides may not match it.
- Complete a dated inventory with photographs, receipts, serial numbers and valuations for high-value items.
- Confirm the total contents sum insured and every sublimit that affects your belongings.
- Ask specifically about accidental damage, portable cover away from home, bicycles, work equipment, jewellery, collections and motor burnout.
- Write down the basic, flood and optional-cover excesses.
- Check the 72-hour waiting period, the 168-hour earth-movement condition and the more-than-60-day vacancy rule.
- Ask how the policy treats theft by housemates, guests and family members.
- Confirm whether your coastal or flood risk involves an excluded storm surge or action-of-the-sea event.
- Compare at least two like-for-like quotes using the same address, sum insured, excess and options.
Everyday Insurance’s own guidance states that eligibility, terms, limits and exclusions apply. If a sales representative’s explanation conflicts with the PDS or schedule, request clarification in writing before paying.
