Everyday Habits That Support Resilience During Stressful Times

Resilience is not a permanent personality trait, and it does not mean staying positive or handling every problem alone. It is the ongoing ability to adapt to difficult experiences. Sleep, movement, food, recovery time, reflection and supportive relationships can give you more capacity to respond, but no routine removes the cause of stress or works identically for everyone.

Use the ideas below as a menu rather than a pass-or-fail program. Choose one action that fits your health, responsibilities, culture and available energy, then adjust it as circumstances change. If stress feels unmanageable or keeps disrupting daily life, habits should accompany—not replace—professional care.

What resilience means during a stressful period

The American Psychological Association describes resilience as successful adaptation through mental, emotional and behavioral flexibility. In practical terms, it can involve recovering after a setback, finding a workable next step, accepting help or changing your approach when the first one is not sustainable. Skills associated with positive adaptation can be practiced; they are not proof that someone is naturally stronger than another person.

Cindy Bergeman, a psychology professor at the University of Notre Dame, told NIH News in Health: “Resilience is the extent to which we can bounce back from adverse events, cope with stress, or succeed in the face of adversity,” (NIH News in Health, October 2020). “Bounce back” does not require returning to exactly how you felt before an event. Adaptation may instead mean building a different routine, grieving, setting limits or asking for practical support.

Resilience also has a social context. Personal habits can help regulate your energy and attention, while relationships and community resources can provide information, comfort, transportation, childcare or other assistance. Think of the goal as creating more options for the next difficult moment, not guaranteeing a particular mood.

Start with the basics that steady your body

Protect a regular sleep window

For adults, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises at least seven hours of sleep per night, and the National Institutes of Health’s emotional wellness toolkit also says adults need seven or more hours nightly. These are adult recommendations; children and teenagers need age-specific guidance. See the CDC stress-management guidance (updated May 12, 2026) and the NIH Emotional Wellness Toolkit.

A consistent bedtime and wake time can make sleep easier to plan, even when the rest of the day is unpredictable. Start with a realistic anchor—such as getting up at the same time on workdays—and protect a short wind-down period. If pain, medication, shift work, caregiving or persistent insomnia makes this difficult, treat that as a reason to discuss sleep with a clinician rather than as a personal failure.

Move in a way you can repeat

The NIH toolkit gives 30 minutes of daily walking as a stress-management practice that can boost mood and reduce stress. The CDC encourages starting small and building toward 2½ hours of physical activity per week. These are public-health suggestions, not guarantees of an individual result; pace and activity should match your abilities and medical advice.

You can divide movement into shorter periods: a walk around the block, gentle stretching between tasks, or a few minutes of stairs if those are safe for you. The useful test is repeatability. An activity that leaves you exhausted or aggravates an injury is not a sustainable resilience practice, so adapt it or ask a health professional for alternatives.

Eat regularly and make room to unwind

NIH’s wellness guidance places nourishing meals and time to unwind alongside sleep, movement and connection. During prolonged stress, “perfect” eating is an unrealistic target. A simple meal, a glass of water and a planned pause can be more attainable than trying to redesign your entire diet. If appetite changes, eating becomes difficult, or a medical condition affects what is safe, seek individualized advice.

Unwinding can be quiet, social or sensory: listening to music, sitting outdoors, taking a shower, reading a few pages or doing nothing for several minutes. The point is to create a deliberate transition out of constant demand, not to earn rest by finishing everything first.

Make social support concrete

“Connect with others” is easier to act on when you name the kind of help you need. The CDC distinguishes emotional support—someone who listens or reassures you—from practical support, such as a ride or childcare (CDC Social Connection, May 15, 2024).

Try a specific request:

  • “Could you listen for ten minutes without trying to solve this?”
  • “Can you pick up groceries on your way over?”
  • “Would you check in with me tomorrow afternoon?”
  • “Could you watch the children while I attend this appointment?”

A trusted person, peer group, faith community, neighborhood organization or support service may be appropriate depending on the problem. If one person is unavailable, that is information about capacity at that moment—not evidence that you should handle everything alone. For safety concerns, contact an appropriate professional or emergency service rather than relying only on informal support.

Create a brief reset you can use anywhere

Short practices can interrupt an escalating stress response without pretending the underlying problem has disappeared. Options described by NIH and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health include deep breathing, stretching, meditation, a walk and quiet time. NCCIH notes that relaxation techniques may work best when practiced regularly alongside healthy nutrition, exercise and social support (NCCIH, “5 Things To Know About Relaxation Techniques for Stress”).

Choose one simple sequence and rehearse it when you are relatively calm:

  1. Stop and place both feet on the floor, or find a stable seated position.
  2. Take several slow breaths without forcing a deep inhale or holding your breath uncomfortably.
  3. Relax your jaw and shoulders, or stretch gently within a pain-free range.
  4. Name the next task that truly needs attention; postpone the rest for a stated time.

Some people find breath-focused exercises uncomfortable, especially after trauma or with certain breathing conditions. Stop if you feel worse and try walking, grounding through the senses or contacting someone instead. A relaxation exercise is a coping option, not a substitute for medical or mental-health treatment.

Use reflection to reduce mental clutter

Writing can turn an undifferentiated sense of pressure into a short list of decisions. CDC and NIH materials mention journaling, gratitude, self-compassion and prioritization. You do not need a special format or paid product; a plain notebook or notes app is enough.

Keep the practice bounded so it supports action rather than becoming another obligation:

  • Write one sentence describing what is happening without judging yourself.
  • List the one or two things that must happen today.
  • Mark what can wait, be delegated or be declined.
  • Record one specific thing you appreciate, such as a person’s help, a safe place or a small comfort.
  • End with a compassionate statement you would reasonably offer a friend in the same situation.

Gratitude is not a demand to overlook harm. You can acknowledge something good while still naming injustice, grief, anger or fear. Reflection should clarify your choices, not pressure you to feel positive.

Limit overload without cutting off essential information

The CDC recommends taking breaks from news and social media. Constant updates can keep attention in a state of alert, especially when stories are emotionally charged. Set a defined check-in period, mute nonessential notifications and choose a small number of reliable sources for information you genuinely need.

Do not interpret a break as abandoning responsibilities or support. Keep alerts for urgent medical, caregiving, workplace or safety information, and tell close contacts how to reach you. If scrolling is your main way to connect with people, replace some passive viewing with a direct message, phone call or group conversation rather than isolating yourself.

A practical menu of repeatable options

There is no universal resilience routine. Compare options by the time and access they require, whether they are solitary or social, and whether you experience them as calming or practical.

Option Specific guidance How to make it repeatable
Sleep Adults: at least seven hours nightly; keep a consistent bedtime and wake time. Anchor one wake time and protect a short wind-down period.
Walking or other movement NIH suggests 30 minutes of daily walking; CDC suggests building toward 2½ hours of activity per week. Start with a small, safe amount and divide it into shorter sessions if needed.
Connection Ask for emotional listening or practical help such as a ride or childcare. Make one concrete request and schedule a follow-up check-in.
Brief reset Try breathing, stretching, meditation, a walk or quiet time. Practice regularly, not only at the peak of distress.
Reflection Journal, note a specific appreciation, prioritize today’s tasks and practice self-compassion. Use a short written prompt at a consistent time.
Information boundaries Take breaks from news and social media while retaining essential alerts. Set check-in windows and disable nonessential notifications.

What to do when you feel overwhelmed

When stress narrows your attention, reduce the number of decisions rather than searching for a complete life overhaul. This sequence combines the practices above:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Orient. Notice where you are, place your feet on the floor and take a few comfortable breaths.
  2. Stabilize one basic need. Drink water, eat something available, step outside briefly or begin your sleep wind-down.
  3. Choose one next action. Write the task that matters most in the next hour; move everything else to a later list.
  4. Contact a person. Send a specific request for listening, information or practical help.
  5. Reduce incoming demands. Pause nonessential notifications and postpone news or social-media checking until your chosen time.
  6. Reassess. If the feeling remains unmanageable or keeps returning, arrange professional support instead of adding more self-help tasks.

On a relatively steadier day, you can build a gentle rhythm: a consistent wake time, a nourishing meal, a short walk, one human check-in, a brief reset and a defined time to stop consuming updates. Missing a day does not erase the skill. Resume with the smallest useful step.

When stress calls for professional help

Stress deserves additional assessment when symptoms interfere with everyday life, lead you to avoid activities or seem present all the time. The National Institute of Mental Health advises speaking with a mental-health professional if you feel unable to cope, have suicidal thoughts or use drugs or alcohol to cope (NIMH, “I’m So Stressed Out! Fact Sheet”).

Contact a doctor or mental-health professional when sleep, appetite, concentration, panic, pain or mood changes persist, or when you are unsure whether a physical or psychological condition is contributing. If you may harm yourself or someone else, or cannot stay safe, use your local emergency number or crisis service now and ask a trusted person to stay with you. Relaxation, journaling and exercise can accompany conventional care, but they should never delay it.

How to keep the habits humane

Stress changes schedules, finances, health, housing and access to support. A habit is useful only if it fits those realities. Adapt the duration, ask for accommodations, use free options and let a trusted person help you plan. The aim is not to perform resilience perfectly; it is to maintain a few sources of recovery, connection and choice while you navigate what cannot yet be changed.
