To someone doing it for the first time, it may hide a version requirement, several unfamiliar steps, and the risk of getting stuck. The word “just” can make a task sound easy—and make it harder to ask for help when it isn’t.
Why can saying “just” make someone stop asking questions?
In his essay “Every Time You Say Just, Somebody Stops Asking,” Serguey Asael Shinder argues that words such as “just,” “simply,” “obviously,” and “of course” can imply that a task should be easy. A newcomer who struggles may then feel that the problem is their own lack of knowledge, rather than a missing step or prerequisite.

Shinder’s explanation is that familiarity changes how difficult a task feels: someone who has worked through its complications may no longer notice them. As he puts it, “Easy is a fact about the person who has done it.” That is an editorial argument, not a measured finding; the essay does not quantify how often this wording stops people from asking questions.
What “just” can leave out
Setup instructions
“Just run the setup script” names an action but may omit what must be installed first, which version is required, what the script will do, or how long it usually takes. A more useful instruction makes those details explicit: “Run the setup script after installing version X; it takes about ten minutes.” The version and time should be included only when they are known and relevant.

Code review
“Just extract this into a helper” can make a requested change sound trivial while leaving the implementation unclear. Say what behavior should move, what the helper should be responsible for, and whether tests or other callers need to change.
Documentation
“Simply configure the proxy” tells the reader that configuration is supposedly simple, not how to do it. Document the settings, prerequisites, and a way to check that the proxy is working.

Estimates
“It is just a new field” can understate work that depends on where the field must appear, how it is stored, whether existing data needs migration, and what tests or interfaces need updating. Describe the known scope and call out what still needs investigation rather than letting “just” stand in for an estimate.

How to make instructions easier to act on
Before sending a direction, review comment, or estimate, look for words that label the task as easy. Replace them with information the reader can use:
Rank #3
- Action: What exactly should the person do?
- Prerequisites: What version, access, configuration, or prior step is required?
- Scope: What is included, and what might need to change alongside it?
- Effort: Give a time estimate only when you have a reasonable basis for it, and make clear what it covers.
- Questions: Invite the person to ask about a blocked step or unclear assumption.
This is a practical application of Shinder’s examples, not a guarantee that changing one word will change how someone responds. Specific instructions make hidden assumptions easier to see and give people a clearer opening to raise them.

If a task sounds harder than the wording suggests, ask for the missing detail directly: “Which version do I need?” or “What else does this change affect?” Shinder also suggests asking how long it took the other person the first time. That can surface complexity they no longer notice, without assuming that they meant to dismiss your concern.
