Ranked by one standout game per console generation, the order is: PS1 with Final Fantasy VII, PS2 with Grand Theft Auto III, PS3 with The Last of Us, PS4 with God of War (2018), and PS5 with Demon’s Souls. The PS5 pick is provisional, because the generation is still active. This assessment is dated 7 October 2026.
“Best” here is an editorial verdict, not a measurable fact. No official source names a best game for any PlayStation generation, so the reasoning below matters as much as the picks.

How the ranking works
Every era is judged on the same four criteria, so no generation gets a looser standard:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Historical influence: Did the game change its console’s identity or push a genre somewhere new?
- Critical reception: How consistently was it praised by critics at the time and since?
- Representativeness: Does the game show what made its generation distinct, rather than just being a good game released in it?
- Present-day playability: Can a newcomer still pick it up and enjoy it without heavy compromise?
Sales figures were not used as a proxy for quality. Sony’s own history pages report hardware sales, and those numbers say more about distribution than about which generation had the best games.

The picks, era by era
PS1: Final Fantasy VII
PlayStation’s official PS1 history page describes the shift from 2D to real-time rendered 3D worlds, and Final Fantasy VII is the game that made that shift feel like a turning point for role-playing games. The page notes it was the first game in its series presented in full 3D. Its influence on the JRPG genre, and on how Western audiences saw Japanese role-playing games, is hard to overstate. Gran Turismo is the other standout Sony cites for the era, and it sold over a million copies in its first month in Japan. It has a strong case as a representative racing game. Final Fantasy VII edges it on influence and cultural reach.
PS2: Grand Theft Auto III
Sony’s history calls the PS2 its best-selling console and highlights DVD playback and a deep game library. Grand Theft Auto III fits that era’s ambition: a large, continuous 3D city that players could explore without loading breaks between sections. Its influence on the open-world genre is one of the clearest in the console’s catalog. The strongest alternatives are Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Each is a serious candidate, and a different rubric weighting could put any of them first.

PS3: The Last of Us
PlayStation’s corporate overview documents that The Last of Us debuted on PS3. That is the verified fact. The judgment that it is the era’s best rests on the editorial criteria: its storytelling and character focus changed how many players and critics talked about narrative in action games. It also represents the PS3’s late-generation emphasis on cinematic presentation. Other PS3 candidates, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Red Dead Redemption, are reasonable choices under the same rubric.

PlayStation’s corporate overview confirms that God of War came to PS4 in 2018. The 2018 entry reinvented the franchise through a single, continuous camera and a more grounded, character-driven story, and it was strongly reviewed. It also represents the PS4’s push toward polished, high-budget single-player games. The Last of Us Part II is a strong alternative, and it is more divisive among critics and players, which is why God of War ranks higher on the rubric.

PS5: Demon’s Souls (provisional)
The PS5 pick is the least settled. The PS5 launched in November 2020 and supports compatible PS4 game collections, so its library includes both native titles and older games. Demon’s Souls, a launch-window remake built around the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, is a reasonable pick for showing what the new hardware could do. Influence is still developing, and later PS5 releases could overtake it. The assessment will be revisited once the generation’s major releases are established.

Playing these games today
Each pick is available on current PlayStation hardware through PlayStation’s own digital storefront or physical editions, though specific availability, pricing, and re-release status change over time and should be checked directly on the PlayStation Store. PS5 plays PS5 games and compatible PS4 game collections. It is not established that the PS5 plays every PS1, PS2, or PS3 title, so older games may require their original hardware or a re-release.
Where the ranking can be challenged
A different weighting produces a different order. Someone who values critical reception above influence might move God of War or The Last of Us higher. A reader focused on representative games might pick Gran Turismo for the PS1. The method above is meant to make the reasoning visible so that disagreements can be argued on specific criteria.
