There are four Charizard styles in the official Pokédex taxonomy: Charizard, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Charizard Gigantamax. The first is the ordinary species; the next two are temporary Mega Evolutions; and the last is a temporary Gigantamax battle form. Dynamax Charizard, anime depictions, and trading-card names such as Charizard-EX are not additional Pokédex-listed forms.
The distinctions matter because each style belongs to a different game system, requires a different activation method, and appears in different Pokémon products. The guide below separates those official forms from look-alikes and explains where to encounter each one.

The four Charizard styles in the official Pokédex
The Pokémon Company’s Pokédex identifies Charizard as Pokédex No. 0006 and lists four styles. A style in this list is the canonical answer to “What are all the Charizard forms?” It does not include every temporary battle effect, costume, card treatment, or animated appearance.
| Style | What it is | How it is activated or obtained | Primary appearance context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charizard | The standard species and final evolution of Charmander | No transformation; it is the ordinary form | Main Pokémon games and the baseline for other forms |
| Mega Charizard X | One of Charizard’s two Mega Evolutions | A Trainer’s Key Stone resonating with Charizardite X | Pokémon X and Pokémon Y-era Mega Evolution and later Mega material |
| Mega Charizard Y | Charizard’s second Mega Evolution | A Trainer’s Key Stone resonating with Charizardite Y | Pokémon X and Pokémon Y-era Mega Evolution and later Mega material |
| Charizard Gigantamax | A named Gigantamax appearance from the Galar system | Obtained through the Gigantamax-capable Pokémon system, including Max Raid Battles | Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield |
Charizard: the base form
Charizard is the normal final evolution of Charmander, following Charmeleon. The official Pokédex classifies it as the Flame Pokémon and gives it Fire/Flying typing, a height of 1.7 m, and a weight of 90.5 kg. Those measurements describe the species, not a temporary powered-up state.

Because it is the baseline, ordinary Charizard is the reference point for every transformation in this article. A Charizard shown at its regular size in a main-series game is normally this form unless the game explicitly labels a Mega Evolution or Gigantamax state.
The base species can appear in the main Pokémon games wherever Charizard is available, and it is also the form most commonly used when the character is shown without a battle transformation. The Pokédex separately provides an Anime Appearances section, confirming that Charizard is represented in animation as well. An animated episode does not create a fifth Pokédex style.
Mega Charizard X
Mega Charizard X is one of two separate Mega Evolutions rather than an alternate spelling of one generic “Mega Charizard.” Mega Evolution temporarily changes a Pokémon’s appearance and can change its type. For Charizard X, the matching item is Charizardite X.

Mega Charizard X debuted in the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y era. It remains one of the forms represented on official Mega Evolution pages, including material associated with Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The X designation is therefore a game-mechanic and item distinction, not a separate species or evolution line.
Mega Charizard Y
Mega Charizard Y is Charizard’s other Mega Evolution. It uses the Y-specific stone, Charizardite Y, with the same Key Stone resonance model. A Charizard holding Charizardite Y does not become Mega Charizard X; the stone determines which of the two named Mega styles is produced.
Like Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y is temporary and exists for battle rather than as a permanent stage after Charmeleon. Its design is intentionally different from both ordinary Charizard and Mega Charizard X. The official Mega Evolution and Legends: Z-A materials list it as its own style, so it should be counted separately in any complete form list.

Charizard Gigantamax
Charizard Gigantamax is the Galar-era named form. Gigantamax is not merely a larger illustration of ordinary Charizard: it gives the Pokémon a distinctive appearance while it uses the Gigantamax battle system. The official Sword and Shield description says that Charizard’s enhanced flames form wings on its back.
In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Gigantamax-capable Pokémon can be encountered through Max Raid Battles. A Charizard caught through that system can use the Gigantamax appearance when the game permits the transformation. The form is temporary, just as the wider Dynamax system is temporary, and the Pokémon returns to its normal size and appearance afterward.
Gigantamax Charizard is therefore associated specifically with the Galar games’ Max Raid framework. It is not a third Mega Evolution, and it does not use Charizardite X or Charizardite Y.

Mega Evolution and Gigantamax: the practical differences
The quickest way to distinguish the powered-up forms is to identify the system that produced them. Mega Charizard X and Y use a Key Stone plus a named Mega Stone. Gigantamax Charizard uses the Galar Dynamax/Gigantamax system and is encountered through the games’ Max Raid structure.

| Transformation system | Mega Evolution | Gigantamax |
| Required trigger | Key Stone resonance with a matching Mega Stone | Gigantamax-capable Charizard using the Galar battle system |
| Charizard-specific item | Charizardite X or Charizardite Y | No Charizardite stone; the form is tied to the Gigantamax system |

| Visual identity | Two distinct Mega designs, X and Y | Enhanced flames that form wings on Charizard’s back |
| Best-known game setting | Pokémon X and Pokémon Y-era Mega material | Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Max Raid Battles |
The official Mega Evolution description emphasizes that Mega Evolution is temporary and that choosing when to unleash it is part of battle strategy. That temporary duration is why Mega Charizard X and Y should not be described as permanent evolutions. Gigantamax likewise describes a battle state, not a new stage between Charizard and another species.

Main-series games
- Ordinary Charizard: The standard species appears wherever Charizard is available in the main Pokémon games. It is the default model and the starting point for both Mega and Gigantamax transformations.
- Mega Charizard X: It debuted with the Mega Evolution system in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y and is listed in continuing official Mega Evolution material. Its defining requirement is Charizardite X paired with a Trainer’s Key Stone.
- Mega Charizard Y: It shares the X/Y Mega Evolution debut context but uses Charizardite Y. It is a separate named style, not a visual variant selected after Mega Evolution has already begun.
- Charizard Gigantamax: It belongs to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. The relevant encounter route is the games’ Max Raid Battle system, where Gigantamax-capable Pokémon can be caught.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A and later Mega material
Official Pokémon Legends: Z-A material explains the Key Stone and Mega Stone resonance model and continues to present Mega Evolution as a current Pokémon concept. That material is relevant to both Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y because it refers to the shared activation system and preserves the two Charizard Mega styles as distinct entries.
The presence of a Mega form on a current official page does not mean every game supports Mega Evolution in the same way. Availability, items, battle rules, and encounter methods are game-specific. Always use the mechanics of the particular title you are playing.

Anime appearances
The official Charizard Pokédex entry includes an Anime Appearances section. This establishes that Charizard appears in animation, but it does not expand the Pokédex style list. Animated Charizard can be shown in ordinary form or in a story’s available transformation context; the appearance itself is not a new species form.

For cataloging purposes, record an animated appearance separately from the four Pokédex styles. A screenshot, episode title, or promotional illustration may show a particular design, but only the official style taxonomy determines whether it counts as Charizard, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, or Charizard Gigantamax.
Trading Card Game products
Trading-card products use naming conventions that do not map one-for-one to the Pokédex. Official checklists document cards such as Charizard-EX and Mega Charizard X ex. These are card treatments and product names used by the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
A card title containing “EX,” “ex,” or “Mega” should not automatically be added to a list of biological or game-model forms. The card may represent an attack, rule category, set identity, or a particular illustration. Keep the card name in a TCG collection list, while keeping the four Pokédex styles in a form taxonomy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy ordinary Dynamax Charizard is not a fifth form
Dynamax is a battle-size mechanic. Gigantamax is a named special appearance within that broader Galar system. The official Pokédex style list names Charizard Gigantamax but does not add a separate style called “Dynamax Charizard.”
That distinction resolves a common counting mistake. If a regular Charizard becomes huge under ordinary Dynamax rules, describe the event as Dynamaxing. Count it as a Pokédex form only when the game identifies the special Gigantamax appearance.
- Use “Dynamax Charizard” when you are describing the temporary size mechanic without the special Gigantamax design.
- Use “Charizard Gigantamax” when the Pokémon has the named Gigantamax appearance, including the flame wings described for Sword and Shield.
- Do not use either term for a normal-sized Charizard shown outside the battle transformation.
How to identify a Charizard form in a game, video, or card
- Check the label first. The official names are Charizard, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Charizard Gigantamax. A label such as “EX” or “ex” usually identifies a card product rather than a Pokédex style.
- Look for the activation system. A Key Stone and Charizardite indicate Mega Evolution. A Max Raid or Galar Dynamax context points toward Gigantamax.
- Separate X from Y by the stone or explicit name. Charizardite X produces Mega Charizard X; Charizardite Y produces Mega Charizard Y. If neither stone or form name is shown, do not guess from a low-resolution image.
- Check whether the transformation is temporary. Mega Evolution and Gigantamax are battle states. A permanent evolution would be a species-line change, not one of these temporary forms.
- Classify the medium separately. A main-game model, anime appearance, and trading card can depict related designs while serving different naming systems.
Quick reference: what counts and what does not
| Example name or description | Count as an official Charizard Pokédex style? | Correct classification |
|---|---|---|
| Charizard | Yes | Base species |
| Mega Charizard X | Yes | Mega Evolution using Charizardite X |
| Mega Charizard Y | Yes | Mega Evolution using Charizardite Y |
| Charizard Gigantamax | Yes | Gigantamax form in Sword and Shield |
| Dynamax Charizard | No separate Pokédex style | Ordinary Dynamax battle mechanic |
| Charizard-EX | No | Trading Card Game product treatment |
| Mega Charizard X ex | No additional Pokédex style | Trading Card Game card name |
| An anime Charizard appearance | No additional style by itself | Animated depiction of an existing form or transformation |
The complete answer in one sentence
Officially, Charizard has four listed styles—base Charizard, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Charizard Gigantamax—with the Mega forms tied to Key Stone and Charizardite activation in the X/Y-era system, and Gigantamax Charizard tied to Sword and Shield’s Max Raid-based Galar mechanics; Dynamax, anime appearances, and TCG card names are related categories rather than extra Pokédex forms.
