Every Military Jet Reported in Star Trek’s Michael Dorn Aircraft Collection

The best-supported inventory of Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Michael Dorn’s military jets contains four aircraft: the CASA HA-200 Saeta, Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, North American F-86C Sabre and North American Sabreliner 40A. A June 2023 report also says Dorn owned and piloted an F-5B, but that aircraft is missing from two later, more detailed inventories, so it should be treated as a reported addition rather than an uncontested fifth entry.

The documented collection, in Dorn’s ownership sequence

Dorn’s aircraft history is best understood as a progression through increasingly demanding jets rather than a single static hangar list. AvBuyer’s 13 April 2023 interview supplies the clearest first-person sequence, while a 2024 SlashGear account independently confirms most of it. The status column distinguishes aircraft consistently identified in those accounts from the F-5B reported by only one source.

Aircraft Role and context Ownership status What the accounts say
CASA HA-200 Saeta Twin-engine military jet Confirmed first military-jet purchase Dorn described the tiny CASA as his introduction to jet operations. SlashGear identifies it as the Hispano Aviación HA-200 Saeta and reports a 429 mph maximum speed and approximately 3,345 feet-per-minute climb for the type.
Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star Military jet trainer Confirmed; owned for about three years Dorn bought it after the CASA. He praised its toughness but had to anticipate its slow engine response on approach. SlashGear reports an approximately 600 mph maximum speed for the aircraft.
North American F-86C Sabre Fighter Confirmed in the detailed inventory Dorn said he followed a progression similar to the Air Force training path and eventually reached the F-86.
North American Sabreliner 40A Corporate transport derived from the Sabre family Confirmed purchase; later sold The aircraft required a copilot and cost more to operate than Dorn wanted, prompting him to sell it.
Northrop F-5B Two-seat military jet variant Additionally reported, medium confidence A June 2023 Metropolitan Airport News caption says Dorn is pictured with an F-5B he “has owned and piloted.” The model does not appear in AvBuyer’s fuller 2023 inventory or SlashGear’s 2024 roundup.

1. CASA HA-200 Saeta

The CASA was Dorn’s first military jet. In the AvBuyer interview, he described it as a tiny, twin-engine aircraft that introduced him to jet operations. SlashGear names the type as the Hispano Aviación HA-200 Saeta and discusses its Spanish Air Force history.

The published performance figures belong to the aircraft type, not to Dorn’s personal flying: SlashGear gives the HA-200 a 429 mph maximum speed and an approximate 3,345 feet-per-minute climb. Those numbers should not be read as a record of what Dorn achieved in the airplane.

2. Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star

Dorn bought a T-33 after the CASA and kept it for approximately three years, a period reported by both AvBuyer and SlashGear. He remembered the jet as demanding enough to teach planning while still being robust. His description, quoted by AvBuyer, was: “It was a good experience,” he recalls, “because the T-33 is built like a tank.”

The T-33’s engine response shaped how he flew it. Dorn said the engine was slow to respond, so an approach required anticipation rather than a last-second power change. SlashGear lists an approximate 600 mph maximum speed for the type. The T-33 is also the most consistently documented aircraft in the collection after the CASA, making it the safest subject when identifying a Dorn-related scale model or kit; such a collectible is not the actor’s aircraft.

3. North American F-86C Sabre

The F-86C marks the fighter stage of Dorn’s progression. AvBuyer’s inventory specifies the C model, while SlashGear refers more generally to the F-86 Sabre. SlashGear quotes Dorn explaining that he went through “the same type of process the Air Force pilots go through” before reaching the F-86, adding: “And got to the F-86 and it just kinda happened. It was amazing.”

That account supports ownership of an F-86, not merely a flight in one. Because the two reports differ in how precisely they name the variant, the most careful wording is “North American F-86C Sabre” when following AvBuyer’s inventory and “F-86 Sabre” when describing the broader corroboration.

4. North American Sabreliner 40A

After the F-86, Dorn purchased a North American Sabreliner 40A. It was a corporate-jet derivative rather than another fighter, but it belongs in the collection chronology because AvBuyer lists it and SlashGear describes the same ownership episode.

The practical problem was operation. Dorn found that the Sabreliner required a copilot and brought operating costs he did not want to carry, so he eventually sold it. Its inclusion explains why lists of his “military jets” sometimes contain an aircraft that was designed for corporate transport rather than frontline combat.

5. Northrop F-5B: the unresolved addition

Metropolitan Airport News adds an F-5B to the story. A June 2023 caption says Dorn is shown with one of several military jets he “has owned and piloted.” That is direct ownership language, but the aircraft is absent from AvBuyer’s detailed 2023 list and SlashGear’s later 2024 roundup.

The discrepancy prevents a definitive claim that the F-5B is part of the fully verified inventory. It is best labeled an independently reported, medium-confidence addition. It should not be silently folded into the four-aircraft list, and it should not be confused with Dorn’s separate comments about possibly acquiring an F-5 in the future.

Jets Dorn discussed wanting, but which are not confirmed collection members

Several aircraft appear in interviews as ambitions rather than completed purchases:

  • Northrop T-38 Talon: SlashGear says Dorn was considering one.
  • Northrop F-5: Also discussed as a possible acquisition. The broad F-5 reference is separate from the Metropolitan Airport News report of an owned F-5B.
  • Vought F-8 Crusader: Dorn discussed the possibility of restoring one for heritage flights.
  • Lockheed F-104 Starfighter: In a 2022 Flying Magazine interview, Dorn called it the jet he had always wanted and his “final airplane.” That is an aspiration, not evidence that he owned an F-104.

None of these four should be counted as confirmed collection aircraft on the cited evidence.

Dorn’s aviation background

The official StarTrek.com Time Capsule says Dorn earned his pilot’s license between the first and second seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The same item says he flew with the Blue Angels, participated in F-16 flight maneuvers and “now owns his own jet.” It does not identify the models in his collection.

AvBuyer reported 1,600 total flight hours for Dorn in 2023. That figure is his total flight time as reported at the time, not hours in any one aircraft and not a performance measurement.

How to interpret lists of Michael Dorn’s jets

  1. Count the CASA HA-200 Saeta, T-33 Shooting Star and F-86C Sabre as the consistently supported military-jet purchases.
  2. Include the Sabreliner 40A when describing the complete aircraft-ownership progression, while noting its corporate-transport role and later sale.
  3. Add the F-5B only with a qualification that it is reported by Metropolitan Airport News but omitted from the more detailed AvBuyer and SlashGear inventories.
  4. Keep the T-38, general F-5, F-8 and F-104 in an aspirations section, not in the owned-aircraft tally.

On that basis, the defensible answer is four well-supported collection aircraft, plus one medium-confidence F-5B report, with four other jets documented as targets rather than confirmed possessions.
