Short answer: Aston Villa ranks first in this balanced AI-assisted list, followed by Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The order is not an official table: “biggest” changes according to whether you value current division, historic trophies, attendances, stadium scale or national reach.

This ranking covers current professional men’s clubs whose home grounds are in England’s traditional East or West Midlands. It uses a published composite model rather than reproducing the unverified order from the Football League World headline listed on 20 March 2026; the listing confirms the article exists, but not its clubs, prompt or scoring system (source listing).

How “biggest” is measured

The ranking blends long-term stature with present-day scale. It is designed to avoid turning the list into a disguised league table.

Criterion Weight What it captures
Current level and recent sporting performance 25% Where the club competes and how competitive it has recently been
Honours and top-flight history 25% Major domestic trophies, European achievement and sustained top-level presence
Attendance and stadium utilisation 20% Regular support, adjusted for how full the ground is
Commercial scale and supporter reach 15% National profile, revenue evidence where published and breadth of support
Stadium capacity and regional profile 10% Physical scale and importance in the surrounding football market
Recent momentum 5% Current relevance rather than historic reputation alone

Missing figures are not invented. A club’s exact position can change when a current-season table, attendance set or financial disclosure changes. Raw attendance is not treated as identical to capacity utilisation, and owner wealth is not treated as a direct measure of supporter size.

#1 Best Overall

The ranking: Midlands clubs from biggest to smallest

These are the results of the balanced model. Clubs separated by only one place should be read as a close group, not as a precise measurement of thousands of supporters.

  1. Aston Villa

Villa have the strongest all-round case: major English honours, extensive top-flight history, European pedigree, a large stadium and an international profile. A current-strength model also keeps them near the summit. Their exact margin over Forest depends on how heavily European history is weighted. Official club source: avfc.co.uk.

  2. Nottingham Forest

Forest’s European Cup triumphs give them exceptional historic weight, while their city-wide support and top-level identity sustain a high composite score. They could rank first in a history-led model, but Villa’s broader domestic record gives Villa the edge here. Official source: nottinghamforest.co.uk.

  3. Leicester City

The Premier League title and European-era success are unusually powerful achievements, and Leicester have operated at the top level for sustained periods. A history-only model may place them below older giants; a recent-achievement model could move them higher. Official source: lcfc.com.

  4. Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves combine major historical importance, a substantial regional following and a long top-flight story. Their place falls slightly when the model gives more weight to recent division and current commercial scale than to legacy. Official source: wolves.co.uk.

  5. West Bromwich Albion

West Brom’s honours, longevity in the top flight and dependable support put them in the leading group. They are a classic example of a club whose historic stature can exceed its position in any single season. Official source: wba.co.uk.

  6. Derby County

Derby’s league titles, top-flight history, large ground and broad support make them one of the region’s traditional heavyweights. Their ranking is vulnerable to recent-performance weighting because current status can diverge sharply from historic scale. Official source: dcfc.co.uk.

  7. Birmingham City

Birmingham benefit from a major-city catchment, a sizeable supporter base and a long record in England’s top divisions. They sit close to Derby and Stoke: changing the attendance or history weights can reverse that order. Official source: bcfc.com.

  8. Stoke City

Stoke’s sustained top-flight spell, modern stadium scale and strong regional identity produce a high score. They rank below the older trophy-rich giants because the balanced model gives historical honours substantial weight. Official source: stokecityfc.com.

  9. Coventry City

Coventry’s top-flight history, major domestic cup success and strong support keep them in the upper-middle group. Their position improves in a current-strength model when recent competitive performance is emphasised. Official source: ccfc.co.uk.

  10. Notts County

Notts County’s historic foundation and enduring identity give them more traditional stature than a current-division-only list would show. Their lower present-day level prevents that history from carrying them into the top nine. Official source: nottscountyfc.co.uk.

  11. Port Vale

Port Vale have a deep football identity and a substantial local following, but fewer top-flight and major-trophy markers than the clubs above them. A support-led model could move them ahead of Notts County or Coventry’s lower edge. Official source: port-vale.co.uk.

  12. Mansfield Town

Mansfield score for longevity, community importance and recent EFL relevance. They rank behind clubs with greater top-flight history, while a current-performance model could narrow the gap. Official source: mansfieldtown.net.

  13. Walsall

Walsall are an established professional club with a clear regional identity and long EFL presence. They place below Mansfield in the balanced model because the latter’s historical and recent competitive indicators carry slightly more weight. Official source: saddlers.co.uk.

  14. Burton Albion

Burton’s modern rise and sustained EFL participation are significant, especially under a current-strength model. They finish last here because the composite gives substantial value to historic top-flight record, major honours and long-established national reach. Official source: burtonalbionfc.co.uk.

Why the order changes under different models

Current-strength ranking

This version prioritises the 2026–27 division, the 2025–26 finish, recent attendances and current commercial relevance. It raises clubs with recent top-level football and can move Leicester, Wolves or Coventry relative to older clubs whose strongest achievements are further in the past.

Historical-stature ranking

This version prioritises major honours, top-flight seasons, European achievement and long-term support. Forest, Villa, Wolves, West Brom and Derby benefit most. A club can rank highly here while currently playing below the Premier League.

Attendance-led ranking

Raw crowds favour large grounds and large cities. Capacity utilisation provides a fairer comparison for smaller stadiums, but it can reward clubs with intentionally compact grounds. Neither measure is a complete proxy for national support.

Clubs covered and boundary cases

The list uses home-ground geography and includes Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Burton Albion, Coventry City, Derby County, Leicester City, Mansfield Town, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Port Vale, Stoke City, Walsall, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It does not quietly add nearby clubs simply because they play in a Midlands-based competition. Chesterfield, Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City, Northampton Town, Peterborough United, Shrewsbury Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Hereford, Solihull Moors, Nuneaton Borough and Tamworth require a separate geographic decision. A future edition should state whether its regional authority places each boundary club inside the East or West Midlands before scoring it.

How to audit or update the list

  1. Confirm each club’s home ground and men’s senior status.
  2. Record the division and final position for the same season, rather than mixing seasons.
  3. Use the relevant season’s usable stadium capacity and average home attendance.
  4. Check honours and league history against competition or club records, including the Premier League, English Football League, National League and Football Association.
  5. Give social-media figures an access date and do not treat followers as unique active supporters.
  6. Run the same published weights through the AI, then have a human check every trophy, capacity, location and league claim.

What this ranking does—and does not—say

  • It is a comparison of club scale, not a league table or a measure of supporter passion.
  • It ranks current professional men’s clubs, not women’s teams, reserve sides, defunct clubs or football identities generally.
  • Close positions are inherently uncertain because history, current performance and popularity measure different things.
  • The Football League World listing confirms the headline’s publication, but its original ranking and AI methodology are not exposed by the available listing, so this article does not present that unseen order as verified fact.

The Bottom Line

On a balanced definition of size, Aston Villa is the Midlands’ strongest overall candidate, with Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers close behind. The result is defensible only because the criteria are visible; change the weights and the order changes.
