Ask the network owner or administrator to reserve an address for your device, or approve another configuration. Setting a static IP on your device is a separate change and can cause an address conflict if it isn’t coordinated.
Why you can’t reserve an address on someone else’s router
A DHCP reservation tells the network’s DHCP server to give a particular device the same local IP address when it requests one. In a typical home network, that server is managed through the router. TP-Link describes the distinction directly: “DHCP reservation assigns a fixed IP address through the router rather than on the device.” (TP-Link, Deco DHCP Reservation; last updated April 20, 2026.)

Because the reservation is made on the network side, you need the router’s administrator to create it. Without that access, changing settings on your own device does not create a reservation in the router.

Ask the owner or administrator first
For a workplace, school, rental, shared household, or other managed network, ask the administrator to reserve an address for the device or tell you which configuration is approved. They can account for the network’s address range, gateway, DNS settings, DHCP pool, and existing devices. This is the safest route because it avoids guessing and lets the person managing the network check for conflicts.

Explain what you need the address for
If you only need to reconnect to a device, ask whether you can use its hostname, a local DNS name, or an approved device-discovery feature instead of a fixed number. Those options depend on the network and the device; they are not guaranteed to be available. If you truly need a fixed numeric address, say so when you contact the administrator.
Can you set a static IP without router access?
You can often enter a static IP in your device’s network settings, but that only changes the device’s configuration. It does not tell the router’s DHCP server to reserve that address. TP-Link warns that manually configuring an address can create a conflict if it is not managed carefully (TP-Link support documentation).

Do not choose an address because it appears unused or copy an example from another network. An address may be inside the DHCP pool, reserved for another device, or invalid for that subnet. Linksys, for example, specifies that reservations on its routers must fall within the router’s reservation range; rules vary by model and firmware (Linksys DHCP reservation guidance).
Only apply a static configuration after the administrator confirms the correct IP address, subnet mask or prefix, gateway, and DNS settings—and confirms that the address won’t conflict with the DHCP pool or another statically configured device. The right settings and steps vary by operating system, so there is no safe universal click path for an unknown network.

Would a second router solve the problem?
A router you administer can provide a separate local network, or LAN, with its own DHCP settings. TP-Link documents address reservation on the TL-WR902AC V3 in standard wireless router mode, using a client MAC address and a chosen IP address (TP-Link TL-WR902AC V3 instructions). That describes a feature on that model; it does not mean you can change the upstream router or that every network permits this setup.
Ask the network owner before connecting another router, and check whether the devices you need to reach can communicate across the two networks. A separate LAN can change how devices find and reach one another, so it may add complexity rather than fix the underlying issue.
