The Evercade Nexus is earning favorable early coverage, with an important distinction: Time Extension published a full review and scored it 8/10, while Tom’s Guide published a hands-on preview and said its full review would come later. Both highlight the bundled Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie as a strong fit for the handheld’s new dual analogue controls. The appeal is clear, but the Nexus is a larger, more expensive step up from the EXP rather than a major leap in processing power.
What reviewers like about the Evercade Nexus
The clearest change is the addition of two analogue sticks. In Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, the right stick can control the camera, making the dual-stick layout more than a spec-sheet upgrade. Time Extension described the controls as a major improvement and awarded the handheld 8/10 in its Evercade Nexus review.

The bundled Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack puts both games on one cartridge. That gives the Nexus a recognizable showcase for its controls and suits Evercade’s physical-cartridge approach. Tom’s Guide also praised the package in its hands-on report, but it is a preview, not a final review.
What the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack includes
The cartridge contains Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. Tom’s Guide reports that the Evercade versions target 60 frames per second and add control options, bonus content, and Stop ’n’ Swop functionality. Those are publisher-reported details relayed by the hands-on report, not results from independent performance testing.

There is some archival appeal beyond simply having the games in a portable format. In a September 2026 TechRadar interview, Blaze Entertainment head of communications Sean Cleaver said Rare shared source code that revealed unreleased tracks and a level editor, among other material. Cleaver said the port includes some of those discoveries and additional unlockable bonuses.
How the Nexus compares with the Evercade EXP
Time Extension reports a 5.89-inch IPS display at 840×512 for the Nexus. The EXP has a 4.3-inch, 800×480 display. The Nexus gives games more screen area, though its larger panel has lower effective pixel density; a bigger display does not automatically mean a sharper image.

The Nexus is also compatible with the existing Evercade cartridge library, making it relevant to owners who already collect games as well as newcomers drawn by Banjo. Catalog totals vary by publisher and report: Time Extension cited more than 70 cartridges and over 700 games, while Tom’s Guide cited more than 80 cartridges and over 700 games. These are each outlet’s 2026 figures, not a single reconciled catalog count.

Trade-offs to consider before buying
- No major power jump: Time Extension found no significant increase in processing power over the EXP and VS. The Nexus’s strongest case is its controls and larger screen, not a generational performance upgrade.
- Size and portability: Time Extension considered the Nexus less portable than the EXP. Its larger body may be welcome for play at home but less convenient for carrying around.
- Shoulder-button comfort: Time Extension reported that the shoulder triggers could be uncomfortable during some play, an ergonomic point worth considering if you use them frequently.
- Price: Pre-release coverage put the device at around $199 and £169, with small differences between publications. Those are reported pre-launch prices, not a guarantee of today’s local retail price.
Is the Evercade Nexus worth it?
The Nexus looks most compelling for players who want the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack, value physical cartridges, or would benefit from dual analogue sticks across compatible games. Owners of an EXP should weigh those improvements against the larger form factor and the lack of a substantial processing-power increase. If portability or raw performance matters more than the new controls and display size, the case for upgrading is less clear.
