For a paid U.S. ticket, Eventbrite charges a service fee of 3.7% plus $1.79 per ticket, plus 2.9% of the total order for payment processing. A WordPress site that takes cards through Stripe pays Stripe’s 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful domestic transaction. That processor line is cheaper on a per-ticket basis, but it is not the whole cost of a WordPress ticketing site. Plugin licences, hosting and maintenance have to be covered by your ticket sales, and the fixed part of those costs matters most for small events.
What Eventbrite charges for a paid U.S. ticket
- Service fee: 3.7% + $1.79 per paid ticket.
- Payment processing: 2.9% of the total order. Eventbrite calculates this on the order total, including service fees and tax.
- Who pays by default: The buyer pays the ticketing fees at checkout. The organizer can choose to absorb them, and a change to that setting applies to future orders.
- Free tickets: Publishing events is free, and there is no fee on free tickets.
These are the U.S. figures in Eventbrite’s published ticketing fee table, as listed in early October 2026. Rates differ by payout country and currency, so an organizer paid in another currency should read the table for that market.

Eventbrite also offers an optional Premium subscription. It is not a transaction fee and should be budgeted separately. On Eventbrite’s pricing and plans page, U.S. Premium is listed at $69 per month or $708 per year. Subscription prices change, so confirm them on that page before you budget.
What a WordPress checkout pays in card processing
Most WordPress ticketing setups that accept cards send the payment through a processor such as Stripe. Stripe’s pricing page lists 2.9% + $0.30 per successful domestic online card transaction in the U.S. International cards and currency conversion carry additional charges.

Event Tickets (free on WordPress.org)
The Event Tickets listing on WordPress.org describes a free plugin with payment integrations. Its changelog states that a 2% Tickets Commerce application fee is waived after a valid Event Tickets Plus licence is activated with Stripe or Square. That is a product-specific checkout detail, not a general WordPress rule. The listing does not state the licence price, so check it before counting the waiver as a saving.

Events Manager
The Events Manager payments documentation says payments can go directly to a connected processor and that the plugin takes no per-ticket commission. The same page says normal processor fees still apply. This is the vendor’s own description of its product. It does not mean every WordPress setup has zero platform cost.

| Line | Eventbrite, buyer pays fees | WordPress with Stripe, no fee passed on |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket price | $50.00 | $50.00 |
| Eventbrite service fee (3.7% of $50 + $1.79) | $3.64 | Not applicable |
| Eventbrite processing (2.9% of the $53.64 order total) | $1.56 | Not applicable |
| Stripe processing (2.9% of $50 + $0.30) | Not applicable | $1.75 |
| Total the buyer pays | $55.20 | $50.00 |
| Amount you keep before site costs | $50.00 | $48.25 |
These are two different payment flows, not a like-for-like contest. On Eventbrite the buyer carries $5.20 on this ticket. On WordPress with Stripe, you carry $1.75 unless you pass it on. If you absorb Eventbrite’s fees instead, the same charges come out of your $50. The processing base then changes with the order total, so the exact figure may differ slightly. Confirm it on the fee table before quoting a number to a client.

Divide your yearly hosting, plugin and maintenance costs by the tickets you expect to sell to see what each ticket must absorb. These values are hypothetical, not benchmarks: if a site costs $300 a year to run, that adds $0.75 per ticket across 400 tickets, but $7.50 per ticket across 40 tickets. Low volume is where the WordPress route stops being cheaper.

Fee payer and fee amount are separate decisions
The fee amount is set by each platform’s rate. The fee payer is your choice. On Eventbrite the default is that the buyer pays, and you can absorb the charges instead. On WordPress, whether to pass the Stripe fee to the buyer depends on how your checkout is built and on the rules that apply to where you sell.
Absorbing a fee does not change the published rate. It reduces what you keep. Choosing which side pays should be a pricing decision you make before you publish the ticket, because changing it later affects the price buyers already saw.
When each route makes sense
- Eventbrite fits when discovery matters, you have no website to run, or you want managed checkout without maintaining plugins.
- WordPress fits when you already run a site, want customer data and branding under your control, and expect enough tickets to spread fixed costs.
- WordPress is a poor fit for a one-off small event where licence and hosting costs exceed the processing saving.
- Either route: confirm current prices on the pages linked above before you set a ticket price.
Checks before you choose
- Set the ticket price and the buyer total you want to compare.
- Decide who pays the fees on each platform.
- Pull current rates from Eventbrite’s fee table and Stripe’s pricing page.
- Confirm the plugin’s licence tier and whether the Stripe or Square waiver applies to your checkout.
- Add the year’s hosting, plugin and maintenance costs, and divide by expected tickets.
- Compare net per ticket at the same buyer total, not at the same face value.
The Bottom Line
Eventbrite is the simpler and more predictable option: its fees are published, and its platform charges are visible on each ticket. A WordPress site with Stripe has a lower processing line, but it only wins on total cost after its fixed costs are spread across enough sales, and only if the plugin you choose adds no platform charge of its own.
