EU orders Apple to open up access to iOS notifications, allow alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay on the iPhone

The European Union has directed Apple to open parts of iOS and the iPhone experience that, until now, have been tightly controlled. The headline items: broader access to iOS notifications and the ability to use alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay on iPhone.

This matters because these features aren’t just “conveniences.” They’re core plumbing for communication, discovery, and media sharing. When that plumbing changes, users get more choice, and developers get new opportunities to build compatible apps.

Below is a practical, reference-style guide to what this order likely affects, what you should watch for in iOS updates, and how to troubleshoot common issues as alternatives roll out.

What the EU order means (plain English)

Think of Apple’s iPhone experience as having two layers. The user-facing layer is what you tap (notifications, AirDrop sheets, AirPlay controls). The underlying layer is how iOS exposes capabilities to apps—permissions, APIs, discovery, and routing. The EU order targets that underlying layer.

In practice, you should expect iOS to become more interoperable: apps that can’t currently do certain notification or local sharing behaviors may gain sanctioned pathways to do so. Apple will still control security boundaries, but it won’t be able to block alternatives as completely as before.

Why the EU is pushing these changes

The EU is operating under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at reducing “gatekeeper” control that can limit user choice and competition. For iOS, the friction point isn’t merely branding—it’s technical access and discoverability.

AirDrop and AirPlay are especially sensitive because they combine device discovery, media transport, and a polished user interface. Notifications are similarly sensitive because they’re a core communication channel that apps rely on to reach users.

What has been ordered: notifications and local sharing

While exact delivery details can vary by jurisdiction and implementation timeline, the directive centers on two categories: notifications and local sharing/casting alternatives.

1) Access to iOS notifications

Apple historically limits what third-party apps can do with notification delivery, handling, and presentation. The EU’s direction points toward giving qualifying competitors more access to the notification “plumbing” so they can deliver alerts and user experiences without being limited to a single, Apple-defined workflow.

For you as a user, the most visible effect is usually not the existence of notifications (those already work). Instead, the change tends to show up in how reliably and flexibly apps can integrate with notification behaviors you can configure (and how consistently they behave across devices).

2) Alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay

AirDrop is local file transfer and device-to-device discovery, while AirPlay is primarily about streaming media to nearby devices (with network coordination). The EU order pushes Apple to allow alternatives so users aren’t constrained to Apple’s proprietary paths for “send to” and “cast to.”

In a best-case scenario, iPhone users will be able to select non-Apple apps or services in the same moments they used AirDrop/AirPlay—without hacks, workarounds, or awkward “screen mirroring only” compromises.

When you can expect changes on iPhone

DMA obligations are tied to timelines and compliance plans, so the rollout won’t be instant. Practically, you’ll see changes land in phases: first developer-facing requirements (APIs, permissions, discovery mechanisms), then app updates, then user-facing controls appearing in iOS settings and UI.

To know what’s available on your device, rely on two signals: iOS release notes for interoperability-related changes and app update notes that explicitly mention notification handling, local sharing, or casting alternatives.

What to do as an iPhone user

Check your iOS version and settings

Start by making sure your iPhone is current. Open Settings → General → Software Update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then review privacy-related toggles that might impact discovery and notification delivery: Settings → Privacy & Security. If a new app claims better sharing or notification integration, confirm the permissions it requests are consistent with your expectations.

Plan for new sharing and casting options

Once alternatives are supported, you may see new “Send” targets or cast devices appear in system share flows and media controls. Your first test should involve a simple local action: send a photo or a short media clip to a known device running a compatible app.

If you don’t see alternatives immediately, it may be because the app or the other device still hasn’t updated for interoperability.

Update apps and test permissions

After updating iOS, update relevant apps from the App Store—especially messaging, file sharing, and media casting apps. Many interoperability changes require both sides to support the new method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then test with fresh installs or cleared permissions if something behaves oddly. (System caches can make troubleshooting slower if you don’t reset permission state.)

What to do if you’re a developer (apps that want to receive or send notifications/sharing)

This is the part that tends to move slower than users expect. Even if iOS adds the right capabilities, your app must implement them in a compliant way.

Audit your current notification flows

Map out where your app relies on notifications today: triggers, categories, badge updates, critical alert usage (where applicable), deep links, and in-app routing after a notification tap.

Then identify what changes when iOS grants competitors more access. For example, you may be able to provide richer experiences, but you might also need to adjust how you handle notification content, user actions, and background behavior.

Design for interoperability and permissions

Interoperability usually comes with new permission prompts or new user controls. Build UI that makes those prompts understandable.

Also, treat device discovery as unreliable in real life: Wi‑Fi bands, firewall policies, VPNs, and local network restrictions can break assumptions. Your app should have a clear “try again” path and diagnostics (logs, error codes, and user-facing guidance).

Support multiple transport paths (not just AirDrop/AirPlay)

Don’t assume one discovery/transfer mechanism will cover every scenario. A robust approach supports a fallback path, such as local transfer when discovery works, and network-based streaming when it doesn’t.

When you publish your update, explicitly test across iPhone models and iOS versions you expect to be supported. iOS behavior can differ between major releases, especially around background networking and local discovery permissions.

Enterprise and IT considerations

If your organization manages iPhones, changes to notifications and local sharing can impact both user experience and policy enforcement. Review Mobile Device Management (MDM) controls related to app permissions, notification behavior, and network permissions.

Because interoperability may introduce new discovery mechanisms, verify whether your network security stack (VLANs, mDNS/Bonjour policies, firewall rules, VPN configurations) allows the needed traffic. Test with a small pilot group before rolling out broadly.

Common gotchas and troubleshooting

Notifications not appearing where you expect

  • Verify notification settings per app: Settings → Notifications → select the app → confirm toggles for Allow Notifications, Sounds, and Badges.
  • Check Focus modes: If Do Not Disturb or Focus profiles are enabled, notifications may be silenced or delivered differently.
  • Force a clean permission state: For stubborn cases, toggle the app’s notification permissions off and back on, or reinstall the app after updating iOS.

Sharing alternatives don’t discover other devices

  • Confirm both devices are on the same local network: Discovery is often local-network dependent.
  • Disable restrictive VPNs temporarily for testing: Some VPNs block local broadcast or mDNS-like discovery.
  • Allow local network permissions in iOS: Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network for the sharing/casting app.

Privacy prompts loop or never complete

If a permissions prompt repeats, it often indicates a conflict between iOS privacy settings and the app’s expected flows (or an older app build with newer iOS). Update both the iOS and the app to current versions.

If it persists, reinstall the app after a device restart to clear cached permission state.

Battery and performance regressions after testing

Discovery and background tasks can increase network activity. If you’re power-sensitive, restrict background behavior where possible (some apps offer in-app controls; others follow iOS defaults).

After enabling alternatives, do a day-long test and compare battery usage in Settings → Battery to see whether one app becomes a top consumer.

Alternatives: what might replace or coexist with AirDrop/AirPlay

Even without naming specific products, it’s useful to understand the patterns alternatives usually use. Expect a mix of app-to-app local transfers and network-based streaming.

On-device file transfer (local, app-to-app)

Alternatives may offer direct selection of a “recipient device” through an app UI, then transfer files locally. In many cases, they still need local network permissions and consistent device discovery behavior.

From your perspective, the goal is similar to AirDrop: quick sending with minimal friction and clear consent prompts.

Cast and media streaming (network-based)

Casting alternatives generally rely on network streaming to a target device. Device discovery might be via local network protocols and can be sensitive to Wi‑Fi segregation and firewall rules.

When it works well, you’ll see a target device appear in the same “cast” moment you’d expect from AirPlay-like experiences—often with richer controls in-app.

Comparison: Apple-native vs interoperable options

Here’s how interoperability changes the tradeoffs you’ll likely notice after updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category AirDrop/AirPlay (Apple-native) Interoperable alternatives (expected)
Discovery Optimized, tightly integrated with iOS May vary by app; can depend on local network setup
User experience Consistent system UI and handoff behavior May present via app UI or system share sheets; can differ
Clear consent flows Still consent-based, but permission prompts may differ by app
Usually strong for Apple-to-Apple scenarios Improves with adoption; expect mixed results early
Best within Apple ecosystem Broader competition across messaging, media, and device makers

FAQs

Does this mean AirDrop and AirPlay are going away?

No. An order to allow alternatives doesn’t automatically remove Apple-native options. You should expect AirDrop and AirPlay to remain supported, while more third-party choices appear alongside them.

Will my iPhone get new notification features immediately?

Not necessarily. Even if iOS adds the required access, apps must update to use it. You’ll likely see changes appear through app updates plus iOS point releases.

What if alternatives work on one iPhone but not another?

Differences usually come down to iOS version, network permissions (like Local Network), and whether the target device runs compatible software. Confirm both ends are updated and that local network access is permitted.

Can this change affect battery life?

Potentially. Discovery and background operations can increase network activity. If you notice abnormal drain, check Battery usage for the new or updated app and adjust its settings if available.

Bottom Line

The EU’s order is aimed at reducing Apple’s gatekeeping over two core iPhone capabilities: notifications and local sharing/casting. For users, that translates into more app choice and more ways to send content or receive alerts—though early interoperability may involve a bit of testing.

For the best experience, keep iPhone and apps updated, verify permissions (especially Local Network and notification settings), and test sharing/casting with known compatible devices before relying on it for important workflows.
