Stores discarded fresh and frozen food; Intermarché said its losses reached “tens of millions of euros” in one day. The incident shows how an unpatched operational-technology device can damage a retailer even when the refrigeration equipment is physically secure.
What happened inside the supermarkets
France’s national cybersecurity agency, CERT-FR, reported “numerous compromises” involving remote refrigeration-management systems. The affected product families named in the bulletin were Danfoss AK-SM, Danfoss AK-SC and Copeland/Dixell XWeb. These controllers supervise compressors, temperature setpoints, alarms and defrost schedules across stores or individual systems.

Associated Press reporting in 2026 said attackers altered controls so refrigeration temperatures reached 50°C (122°F) for roughly six hours. That figure refers to the temperature reported by the compromised refrigeration control environment, not the outdoor temperature. By changing setpoints and defrost behavior, an intruder can make cooling equipment stop protecting stock and can leave heating or defrost cycles running far longer than intended. Food that should remain chilled or frozen then becomes unsellable.
Because these systems manage equipment remotely, an attacker does not need to enter a plant room. A management interface reachable from the public Internet can provide the same operational leverage as a local service connection.

Which systems were involved
| Controller family | Role in the incident | Lifecycle information reported |
|---|---|---|
| Danfoss AK-SM | Remote refrigeration-management controller named by CERT-FR | Associated French systems were mostly older products that no longer received software or security updates, according to Danfoss as quoted by AP. |
| Danfoss AK-SC | Remote refrigeration-management controller named by CERT-FR | Lifecycle and patch status vary by exact model and installation; each unit requires an inventory check. |
| Copeland/Dixell XWeb | Web-based refrigeration-management platform named by CERT-FR | Copeland described an affected generation as discontinued and end-of-life, according to AP. |
AP also cited an August report from Claroty that found numerous Danfoss controllers directly accessible from the public Internet. AP reported that Danfoss and Copeland had since fixed the vulnerabilities described in the coverage, but a vendor fix does not automatically update equipment already installed in stores. Operators still have to identify each device, remove unsafe exposure and deploy the applicable firmware or replacement.
How many stores were hit and what did it cost?
French Finance Minister Roland Lescure told AP that about 700 of France’s 10,000 supermarkets were affected. AP described involvement by hundreds of supermarkets and independent stores. The figure is a French estimate, not an audited count for all of Europe.

Intermarché reported losses of “tens of millions of euros” in one day. That statement covers the company’s reported one-day impact and should not be converted into a Europe-wide total. The available public reporting does not establish an audited aggregate loss for the European grocery sector.

Why old firmware and Internet exposure compounded the risk
The incident required two weaknesses to overlap. First, many controllers were old enough to have reached the end of their security-support period. Second, management interfaces were exposed to the public Internet instead of being confined to a protected operational network.

Physical security around compressors, evaporators and electrical panels cannot compensate for an exposed digital control path. An end-of-life controller may remain fully capable of changing setpoints while no longer receiving fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities. Once an attacker reaches the interface, the consequence is operational: food spoilage, emergency callouts, disposal costs and possible regulatory or insurance complications.
CERT-FR said exposing a management interface directly to the Internet is contrary to good practice and warned that attack campaigns were probably still underway. No perpetrator has been publicly identified. Europol said investigations were ongoing, so there is no evidentiary basis for attributing the activity to a particular criminal group or state actor.

What a supermarket should do now
CERT-FR’s response sequence is designed to contain an intrusion before normal operations are restored. A retailer should coordinate its security team, refrigeration contractor and manufacturer rather than making isolated changes to one store.
- Remove public exposure. Disconnect the controller’s management interface from the public Internet. Preserve firewall, router and controller logs before making changes where possible.
- Verify operating settings. Check temperature setpoints, alarm thresholds, compressor schedules and every defrost schedule. Compare them with approved store or equipment configurations.
- Restore access only through a protected path. Use a properly configured VPN or another protected network with firewall restrictions, device authentication and least-privilege accounts. Do not simply move the same interface to a different public address.
- Update firmware. Apply the vendor’s supported firmware for the exact controller model, following change-control procedures and confirming that the update does not erase required configuration.
- Enable strict security mode where available. Use the strongest authentication and access-control mode provided by the controller generation.
- Replace default credentials. Change every default or shared password, use unique credentials per site or role, and remove accounts that contractors no longer need.
- Reset suspected compromises. If unauthorized changes, unexplained logins or abnormal schedules are found, perform a factory reset, reconfigure from a known-good baseline, then repeat network isolation, firmware, security-mode and password controls.
Checks that prevent a second incident
- Maintain an independent inventory of every refrigeration controller, firmware version, IP address, owner and support status.
- Scan from outside the organization to confirm that no management interface remains publicly reachable.
- Alert on setpoint changes, unusual defrost durations, new accounts and logins outside approved maintenance windows.
- Document who is responsible for patching: the grocer, refrigeration contractor, managed-service provider or manufacturer.
- Set an end-of-life replacement date for controllers that cannot receive security updates.
How retailers should compare remediation plans
A low-cost plan that only changes passwords leaves major exposure unresolved. Procurement and risk teams should score each store or contractor proposal against the same operational questions:
Best Value
| Decision area | Question to require an answer |
|---|---|
| Supportability | Is the exact controller model still supported, and until what date? |
| Exposure | Can any management interface be reached from the public Internet? |
| Secure access | Are VPN, firewall and role-based access controls implemented and tested? |
| Credentials | Have default, shared and inactive contractor credentials been removed? |
| Patch speed | How quickly can validated firmware be deployed across every site? |
| Recovery | Can the team factory-reset, rebuild and verify a known-good configuration? |
| Visibility | Is there an independent asset inventory and centralized monitoring? |
| Accountability | Does the contract clearly assign patching, incident response and replacement duties? |
What the EU Cyber Resilience Act changes
The European Commission says the Cyber Resilience Act entered into force on 10 December 2024. Reporting obligations begin on 11 September 2026, and the main obligations apply from 11 December 2027. The Act requires manufacturers to address vulnerabilities across a product’s lifecycle.
Those dates do not retroactively patch a supermarket’s installed equipment. Retailers still need to secure or replace exposed controllers now, while manufacturers and integrators will face clearer lifecycle responsibilities for products placed on the European market. Commissioner Thierry Breton summarized the supply-chain issue in 2022: “When it comes to cybersecurity, Europe is only as strong as its weakest link: be it a vulnerable Member State, or an unsafe product along the supply chain.”
For grocers, the practical lesson is immediate: treat refrigeration controls as critical operational technology, not ordinary office appliances. Internet isolation, supported firmware, strong credentials, monitored remote access and a tested recovery process are the controls that keep a cyber incident from becoming a truckload of spoiled food.
