If your Ethernet port has no lights, first check whether the cable and network hardware are making a physical link. Reseat both ends, confirm the cable is plugged into a router’s LAN port—not its Internet/WAN uplink—and test a known-working cable. A dark LED can indicate no detected physical link on devices that document it that way, but it does not tell you which part has failed.
What no Ethernet lights mean—and what they don’t
LED behavior depends on the computer, dock, router, or switch. Dell says that on the devices covered by its guidance, “Off | No light” means “No physical link has been detected by the hardware.” That is a device-specific interpretation, not a universal rule for every Ethernet port. Check the manual for your exact model; some devices have no visible link indicator, and colors or blinking patterns can differ. Dell’s Ethernet port guide

When a device reports no physical link, start with the cable, connectors, network port, power, and adapter link state. A missing link is different from a connection that has a link but cannot reach the internet. Windows TCP/IP or DNS resets are not the first response to a physically absent link.
Check the cable, computer port, and router port
- Confirm the computer has an Ethernet port. Plug the cable fully into the computer’s Ethernet jack and into the network device. A cable that looks connected may not be seated completely.
- Use a LAN port on the router. For a computer connection, plug into a port labeled LAN or Ethernet. Do not use the router’s Internet/WAN port; that is typically for the connection between the modem and router. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide
- Try a known-working cable. If the replacement cable establishes a link, the original cable is suspect. If it does not, keep testing rather than assuming the computer’s jack is broken.
- Try another LAN port. If the router or switch has another available, powered LAN port, move the cable there. A single network-device port can be unpowered or faulty.
- Check the device indicators in its manual. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model to interpret a dark or blinking light.
Use a cross-test to isolate the failing side
Change one component at a time so the result is useful. For example, keep the cable and router port the same while testing another computer. If that device connects, attention shifts to the original computer. If it also fails, investigate the cable, router port, or wider network side. When practical, you can also try the original computer with a known-working cable and a different LAN port.
#1 Best Overall
- Multifunctional Network Cable Tester: TESMEN TLP-123A Supports RJ45 and RJ11, enabling rapid detection of line connectivity, short circuits, open circuits, miswiring, and cable shielding status. An essential tool for troubleshooting line faults and network maintenance, it effectively boosts your work efficiency
- Convenient and Efficient: Featuring one-button operation and a test speed adjustment gear on the main control unit for enhanced flexibility. Clear LED indicators provide intuitive test result displays, making it easy for both professionals and home users to operate
- Portable and Durable: Compact and lightweight design for easy portability. Constructed with high-quality plastic housing for robust structure, ensuring both durability and stability. Ideal for home wiring, IT equipment setup, electrical maintenance, and LAN DIY projects
- Detachable design: The main control unit and remote unit can be separated and used independently, allowing you to test both ends of long cables. This makes it ideal for wall-mounted ports, long-distance cabling, or structured cabling systems, perfect for homes, offices, or professional IT environments
- What you will get: 1 * TLP-123A Network Cable Tester, 1 * user manual, 2 * AAA batteries
- Only one computer fails: focus next on that computer’s Ethernet adapter, adapter settings, or hardware.
- Multiple devices fail on the same cable and port: focus on the cable, router or switch port, and network connection.
- No built-in Ethernet jack: a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a wired connection or let you test another device. Check that the adapter matches the computer’s USB connector and operating system. It is a testing option, not a confirmed repair for a failed built-in adapter.
Microsoft recommends testing another PC where possible and notes that results may point to the PC, router, ISP, or USB Ethernet adapter. Dell also recommends known-good cable testing and cross-device checks. Dell’s wired Ethernet troubleshooting guide
If the physical checks pass, check Windows

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
- Check Ethernet status: open Settings > Network & internet and inspect Ethernet. If Windows says “network cable unplugged,” it is reporting that it does not detect a wired connection; continue isolating the cable, port, and adapter rather than treating that message as proof the cable itself is defective.
- Run the troubleshooter: on Windows 11, Microsoft recommends the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Follow its prompts and note any reported adapter or connection issue.
- Consider the driver only after earlier checks: if the problem began after an update and physical checks have not resolved it, Microsoft suggests considering an Ethernet driver uninstall and restart. Have a backup driver available before removing the current one.
- Keep Network reset as a last resort: Microsoft says this removes installed network adapters and resets their settings. VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again.
Microsoft’s support page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the troubleshooting guidance does not change that support status. Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows
When to contact the computer or network-device manufacturer
If a known-working cable and an alternate working LAN port still produce no link on one computer, the computer’s adapter, a disabled adapter setting, or hardware could be involved. Consult the computer’s model-specific manual or support before replacing parts. Some systems have adapter controls in Device Manager or BIOS, but the available settings and their names depend on the model; use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than changing unfamiliar firmware options.
