Ethereum’s quantum-security deadline is pushing its major scaling projects toward different strategies. zkSync is trying to make Ethereum faster and more useful to institutions, while Starknet is considering becoming an independent Layer 1 so it can set its own timetable for quantum resistance.

Two responses to the same quantum deadline

The Ethereum Foundation’s roadmap, as reported by CryptoSlate in 2026, sets an aggressive target of December 2029 for quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers. Quantum-resistant cryptography is intended to protect signatures, proofs and data-availability mechanisms from future quantum computers capable of breaking widely used public-key systems.

That date creates a strategic choice for Ethereum’s scaling networks. A project that remains tightly dependent on Ethereum inherits its security schedule and must keep bridges, settlement and data availability compatible with Ethereum’s changes. A project that becomes its own Layer 1 can choose a different cryptographic timetable, but it also takes responsibility for consensus, security, liquidity and infrastructure that Ethereum currently supplies.

zkSync and Starknet are now signaling those opposite approaches: zkSync is emphasizing proving performance and regulated-bank infrastructure, while Starknet is evaluating independence.

What does zkSync’s prover milestone mean for Ethereum?

Airbender Prime’s reported benchmark

Matter Labs says its Airbender Prime prover processed 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds per block on a single NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. The report, covered by CryptoSlate in 2026, says every block completed in under 12 seconds when witness preparation was included.

A prover converts transaction execution into a cryptographic proof that another party can verify. Faster proving can reduce the delay and hardware burden involved in posting validity proofs, making it easier for a rollup to follow Ethereum’s activity and potentially support higher throughput.

What the number does—and does not—show

  • The test demonstrates sustained performance over thousands of consecutive mainnet blocks rather than a single favorable block.
  • The headline figure excludes witness preparation; the end-to-end result reported for every block was below 12 seconds.
  • The benchmark used one specific workstation GPU. It does not establish the purchase price, operating cost, power consumption, proving cost per transaction, or production performance across different hardware.
  • It is not a quantum-resistance result by itself. Faster proving improves scalability and verification economics, while quantum resistance depends on the cryptographic systems used for signatures, proofs and data availability.

For Ethereum, the practical significance is that a rollup could track the chain with less proving latency and potentially less specialized infrastructure. Whether that advantage translates into lower fees or recurring revenue depends on production workloads and the commercial terms of the network.

Why Starknet is considering becoming an independent Layer 1

Control over the security timetable

Starknet is considering an independent Layer 1 with a target of full quantum resistance in 2027, two years ahead of Ethereum’s cited December 2029 objective. The proposal still needs governance approval and substantial engineering work; the target is not a completed migration or a guaranteed delivery date.

Operating as an independent Layer 1 would let Starknet choose its own signature, proof, consensus and data-availability upgrades. It could adopt quantum-resistant components without waiting for Ethereum-wide coordination. That control comes with a larger security surface: Starknet would need to operate and secure its own consensus, manage its own bridge to Ethereum and define how data remains available to users and applications.

The trade-off with Ethereum dependence

Remaining an Ethereum-linked network offers inherited settlement credibility, shared liquidity and a familiar security anchor. Independence could shorten Starknet’s cryptographic schedule, but it would make the network responsible for risks that Ethereum currently absorbs. The key question is not only whether Starknet can deploy quantum-resistant technology by 2027, but whether users and applications will accept a new trust and bridge model.

How Prividium targets banks and private execution

Private chains with Ethereum settlement

Matter Labs’ Prividium is designed for private institutional execution rather than an open retail rollup. Its stated goals include direct settlement to Ethereum and atomic transfers between private chains. Atomic transfers are intended to complete as one coordinated operation, reducing the risk that assets move on one private network while the corresponding leg fails on another.

The design aims to give banks confidentiality and permissioned access while retaining a connection to Ethereum’s settlement layer. That positioning places Prividium between fully public rollups and isolated permissioned ledgers: execution can be restricted, but settlement and interoperability can still use Ethereum.

Early institutional signals

Deutsche Bundesbank is reported to be testing Prividium’s open-source permissioning engine. The test indicates institutional interest in the access-control layer, but it is not evidence of a production deployment or a commercial contract.

zkSync materials cite five founding US regional-bank partners with more than $8 trillion in assets. A broader zkSync-hosted summary claims more than 30 institutions with over $10 trillion in combined assets. Both figures are company-reported and describe assets represented by participating institutions; they do not show how much value is running on Prividium or how much revenue it generates.

zkSync and Starknet compared

Axis zkSync Starknet
Quantum-security timetable Aligned with Ethereum’s cited December 2029 target while improving proving infrastructure. Considering full quantum resistance by 2027; governance approval and engineering work remain.
Relationship with Ethereum Seeks deeper dependence on Ethereum for settlement while making proof generation faster. May reduce dependence by becoming an independent Layer 1.
Proving performance Matter Labs reports Airbender Prime processed 99% of 7,200 consecutive mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each on one RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU; all were under 12 seconds including witness preparation. No comparable proving benchmark is stated in the cited material.
Hardware economics One-GPU benchmark reported; acquisition, power and recurring operating costs are not stated. Not stated.
Bridge and data-availability control Continues to rely on Ethereum-linked settlement and availability assumptions. An independent Layer 1 would control its own bridge, consensus and data-availability choices, along with their risks.
Governance requirements Prover and institutional product changes remain subject to the project’s governance and engineering processes. A Layer 1 split explicitly requires governance approval and a large protocol migration.
Institutional distribution Prividium targets private bank execution; zkSync cites five US regional-bank partners with more than $8 trillion in assets and over 30 institutions with more than $10 trillion in a broader summary. No equivalent institutional asset figure is stated.
Fee maturity Private-interoperability fees are unfinished, and no published model connects Prividium usage to ZK-token demand. No mature fee model tied to the proposed independent Layer 1 is stated.
Evidence of recurring revenue Institutional participation claims are reported, but recurring revenue is not established. A revenue model for an independent chain is not established.

Can private bank deployments produce sustainable revenue?

They could create a larger addressable market than consumer transactions, but the public evidence is not yet a revenue case. Prividium’s private-interoperability fees are unfinished, and no published fee model shows that using Prividium would create demand for the ZK token. Partnerships, pilots and assets represented by institutions are therefore distribution indicators, not proof of recurring cash flow.

The same distinction matters for Starknet. A new Layer 1 could collect transaction, sequencing or interoperability fees, but the cited plan does not establish pricing, projected volume or how security costs would be covered. Until those terms are published, neither project can be evaluated on revenue multiples or token-demand forecasts with confidence.

What to watch next

  • Ethereum’s cryptographic upgrades: whether the execution, consensus and data layers publish concrete milestones toward the December 2029 target.
  • Airbender in production: whether the reported block-proving performance persists with real workloads, witness-generation costs and operational overhead included.
  • Starknet governance: a formal vote, migration design and bridge-security plan for the proposed independent Layer 1.
  • Prividium commercial terms: published fees, settlement costs, interoperability pricing and any explicit relationship to ZK-token usage.
  • Institutional deployment evidence: production launches and transaction volumes, rather than partner or asset totals alone.

What this means for Ethereum users and developers

Users should expect the quantum-security discussion to affect architecture before it affects ordinary wallet screens. Developers choosing a rollup will need to examine its proof system, bridge assumptions, upgrade authority and data-availability guarantees, not just its advertised transaction speed. Institutions evaluating private execution will need clear permissioning, settlement and fee terms. Starknet’s possible independence could offer earlier cryptographic control, while zkSync’s approach prioritizes tighter integration with Ethereum and institutional use cases.
