With the new release, Prysm validators default to a 200-million gas limit from the Sepolia Gloas fork; v7.2.0 would have left them at 60 million unless operators changed the setting. The update fixes a client default—it does not prove the test succeeded or set a gas limit for Ethereum mainnet.
What Prysm changed
Prysm v7.2.0 supported the scheduled Sepolia fork, but its release notes say the release was cut before an upstream Sepolia gas-limit schedule was added. As a result, validators running v7.2.0 would default to 60 million gas after the fork unless their operators configured another value. The notes said a follow-up release would include the schedule. Released October 5, 2026, Prysm v7.2.1 added a schedule that sets the default to 200 million gas from the Sepolia Gloas fork. Operators can still choose a different limit in proposer settings, through the keymanager API, or with --suggested-gas-limit. Prysm v7.2.1 release notes

Why the fix mattered before activation
The Ethereum Foundation scheduled Glamsterdam for Sepolia at epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768—October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC. The Foundation’s September 28 announcement said Hoodi and mainnet activation dates had not yet been decided. Ethereum Foundation: Glamsterdam Testnet Announcement
The Sepolia capacity test was intended to exercise a 200-million gas limit, up from the previous 60-million setting. If a validator running Prysm v7.2.0 kept proposing blocks at its lower default, those blocks would not exercise the planned higher capacity. The v7.2.1 schedule aligned Prysm’s default with the test’s intended setting; it did not require every operator to use that value. Prysm release notes Contemporaneous report

Does 200 million gas apply to Ethereum mainnet?
No. The 200-million figure in this change is a Sepolia testnet setting. The Foundation’s announcement scheduled Sepolia only and left Hoodi and mainnet dates undecided. It does not establish a mainnet gas limit or an activation date. Ethereum Foundation: Glamsterdam Testnet Announcement

The cited announcements and software notes document the planned activation and Prysm’s configuration, but do not report a measured post-activation block-gas outcome. What Glamsterdam is testing
Glamsterdam combines the Amsterdam execution-layer upgrade with the Gloas consensus-layer upgrade. The Ethereum Foundation identifies enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs) as headline changes intended to support higher execution capacity while keeping block validation practical. BALs provide information about state access so clients can parallelize state reading and transaction validation. Ethereum Foundation: Glamsterdam Testnet Announcement Ethereum Foundation: Glamsterdam upgrade information
The upgrade also changes gas accounting. The Foundation describes EIP-8037 as increasing and separately metering state-creation costs, and EIP-8038 as changing state-access costs. These repricings are intended to better reflect resource use and support higher gas limits while managing state growth. Ethereum Foundation: Glamsterdam upgrade information

What validator operators should check
- Confirm the client version and its schedule. Prysm v7.2.0 and v7.2.1 have different documented defaults from the Sepolia fork; do not assume that fork support alone means the intended gas limit is configured. Prysm release notes
- Verify any override. Prysm operators can set a different limit in proposer settings, through the keymanager API, or with
--suggested-gas-limit. Check the effective configuration rather than assuming the release default applies. - Use the setting appropriate to the network. The Sepolia schedule is not a mainnet limit. Follow the relevant network and client configuration rather than carrying the testnet value over by assumption.
What contract, wallet, and node-tooling developers should review
Changes to gas accounting can affect software that assumes particular gas costs or uses gas values as part of its logic. The Foundation’s developer guidance flags several areas to examine:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Fixed gas stipends or hardcoded gas values.
- Code that branches on
gasleft(). - Presigned transactions with fixed gas limits.
- Gas estimators and cached gas constants in wallets, RPC services, and node tooling.
Old gas constants may underestimate gas under the new schedule, so developers should test gas-sensitive behavior against the applicable upgrade rules. The Foundation says historical transaction replay found “the large majority of transactions” had no change; it provides no percentage in that statement. It also says, “The large majority of smart contracts are unaffected.” Those statements are broad impact guidance, not a guarantee about an individual contract or transaction.
