A report published by Crypto Briefing on October 7, 2026, says Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged holders to prepare for a possible future threat to cryptographic keys by moving assets to fresh addresses and rotating critical signers. The report describes the risk as a potential crisis—not a confirmed break—and its “months not years” timeline has not been independently verified. Ethereum’s official materials describe post-quantum protections as ongoing roadmap work, not an emergency migration order.
What does “bunker mode” mean?
In the Crypto Briefing report, “bunker mode” refers to preparedness measures Drake is said to have proposed for a possible future compromise of cryptographic keys. According to the report, he called for holders to move assets to fresh addresses, for large holders to act first, and for organizations with critical signers to rotate keys and consider hash-based multisigning. These are claims attributed to the report: its original post could not be independently verified, and Ethereum.org does not present them as current user instructions.

The report also attributes the phrase “months not years” to Drake in connection with AI progress in mathematical reasoning. That is a reported warning, not a measured forecast. The available evidence does not establish that AI has broken Ethereum’s signature scheme or can recover private keys in practice.

Ethereum.org says standard externally owned accounts (EOAs) use the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) to sign transactions. When an account sends a transaction, its public key becomes exposed onchain. An account that has only received ETH has exposed its address, which is a hash of its public key, rather than the public key itself. Ethereum.org’s post-quantum roadmap explains this distinction.

- Seedless by design, nothing to steal: Your private key is generated inside the EAL6+ chip and never leaves it. No seed phrase is shown or typed at setup, so a tampered device, keylogger, or phishing site has nothing to capture. 9+ years, millions of card.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 16,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Backup without a seed phrase: Your wallet is copied to 2 backup cards with end-to-end encryption, so there are no words on paper to lose or leak. Keep them in separate places; if one card is lost, the others restore full access. Optional seed phrase for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
Public-key exposure is relevant to cryptographic threat models, but it does not mean the corresponding private key has been recovered. The report’s concern is prospective; the sources available here do not show that ECDSA has been broken.
What does Ethereum’s official roadmap say?
Ethereum.org describes post-quantum protection as work in progress. It points to account-level signature agility as a direction that could let accounts change signature schemes individually, and says wallet software will guide users through future migration. Its roadmap summary states: “Your funds are safe today and wallet software will guide you through future migration.” That is Ethereum.org’s roadmap guidance, not an assessment of the separate AI scenario reported by Crypto Briefing.

- Proven security at scale: Over 9 years and millions of cards issued with no known remote hacks, while military‑grade EAL6+ security keeps your private keys locked inside the chip. Your cryptocurrencies stay strongly protected from online attackers.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 14,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Smart backup: Use your second Tangem Wallet as your Backup keys with end‑to‑end encryption; no more papers, pictures. If one card is lost, the remaining can still restore full access, with an optional seed phrase available for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.

The Ethereum Foundation’s cryptography research index lists Justin Drake and coauthors’ work, “Hash-Based Multi-Signatures for Post-Quantum Ethereum”. The paper discusses hash-based signature schemes as post-quantum alternatives. Research on these schemes is not evidence that SPHINCS or another hash-based scheme is deployed for ordinary Ethereum accounts.

Not on the strength of this report alone. The reported proposal is not an official Ethereum.org emergency procedure, and the available evidence does not establish a confirmed attack or a universally safe migration process. Moving assets or rotating keys can introduce operational and human-error risks; the sources cited do not quantify those risks or provide a step-by-step procedure for individual users.

If you are considering a change, seek current, independently verified guidance from your wallet provider or custodian before acting. For organizations, any key rotation or signer change should be planned around the actual capabilities and recovery procedures of the systems involved. Do not send funds to a new address or change signing arrangements based only on an unverified social-media claim.
