There is no DEX aggregator that always gives the best swap. The route that returns the most tokens depends on your trade size, available liquidity, pool fees, network costs, and the liquidity or solver offers available when you request the quote. A router may split your order across pools, add intermediate tokens, or send an intent to competing solvers. Those choices can reduce price impact, but every extra step has a cost. Compare the complete expected execution—not the headline exchange rate—for the specific transaction you are about to sign.
What a DEX aggregator changes in a swap
A decentralized-exchange (DEX) aggregator searches more than one liquidity source instead of committing your entire trade to a single pool. Liquidity for the same token pair can be distributed among protocols, fee tiers, pool designs and professional market makers. For a small order, one pool may be sufficient. For a larger order, consuming too much of that pool moves its price against you. A router can look for a better allocation before producing the transaction.

The route is an execution plan. It specifies which pools or market makers receive each portion of your input, in what sequence, and what output is expected after pool fees, route fees and network costs. The displayed effective price is therefore the combined result of all portions, not necessarily the rate shown by any one pool.
Routing is dynamic. The available path can change as liquidity, prices, gas conditions and solver participation change. An aggregator that produced the best quote a minute ago may not produce it now. Treat every quote as time-sensitive and inspect the transaction conditions before approval.

How pool-based routing works
Single-pool execution
A direct AMM route sends the trade through one on-chain pool. Automated market makers price the trade from the pool’s reserves or liquidity curve. As your order consumes a larger share of available liquidity, the marginal price generally worsens; the effect can be non-linear for a sufficiently large order. A direct route has fewer contract calls and usually fewer opportunities for fee accumulation, but it may suffer substantial price impact when the pool is shallow.
Split routes
A split route divides the input among two or more pools. One portion might use a low-fee pool with deep liquidity while another uses a different fee tier or protocol. Each portion receives its own execution rate and incurs the applicable pool fee. The aggregator combines the portions into one effective output, after accounting for the route’s costs.
Splitting can reduce price impact because no single pool bears the entire order. It is not automatically beneficial: if the portions are too small, or if extra calls and fees outweigh the price improvement, a single pool can produce more net output.

When a direct pair is illiquid, a router may trade through an intermediate asset. For example, it can exchange token A for a liquid intermediary and then exchange that intermediary for token B. Each hop introduces another pool interaction, another fee tier and another source of price movement. More hops can unlock liquidity that is not available in the direct pair, but they also increase execution complexity and network cost.
Uniswap says its router evaluates price, liquidity and network cost, simulates alternatives, and adds a step only when the expected price improvement exceeds the added cost. Its support explanation also says the route view can show the pools and splits used by a quote: How routing works. This describes Uniswap’s own system; it is not independent evidence that its route will beat every other service.

Partial fills and combined pricing
A split does not mean every portion executes at the same rate. AMM routes versus intent and solver execution
AMM route
With an AMM route, your signed transaction calls on-chain pools directly. For Uniswap’s API, supported AMM paths can use V2, V3 or V4 pools and may include split or multi-hop routes. You can inspect the proposed path, but the transaction still depends on on-chain state when miners or validators include it.

An intent expresses the result you want—such as swapping a specified input for at least a specified output—without prescribing every pool call. Third-party solvers compete to fill that order. A solver may combine on-chain liquidity, private inventory and other venues, then submit the settlement transaction.
UniswapX is an example of this model. Its whitepaper describes a non-custodial Dutch-auction protocol using off-chain signed orders that are settled on-chain. Fillers source liquidity and pay gas to submit the fill; those costs are recovered through the execution price, so a “gas-free” interface is not the same as cost-free execution. Solver participation is a market condition, not a permanent property of a token pair. A solver can be unable or unwilling to fill an order, and an API may fall back to an AMM route when its rules allow. A solver quote can therefore be excellent in one block and unavailable in the next.

Uniswap API thresholds are implementation rules
Uniswap’s current API documentation says it includes a UniswapX route when an order exceeds 300 USDC equivalent, or when the UniswapX quote improves on the AMM route by at least 0.2%. For orders at or below that size, the improvement condition applies. These are rules for that API, not a general threshold that applies to other aggregators or to every interface. The same documentation explains that the API can return a UniswapX path rather than AMM split details and may fall back when a fill is not available: AMM vs UniswapX Routing.

How to compare two quotes for the same swap
- Keep the inputs identical. Use the same wallet, sell token, buy token and exact input amount. A different amount can produce a different optimal route.
- Record the expected net output. Start with the quoted receive amount, then account for protocol, service or infrastructure fees and any network cost that you pay separately. For solver fills, use the offered execution amount after embedded costs.
- Open the route details. Identify direct, split and multi-hop paths; note each pool, fee tier and intermediate token. If the interface does not reveal these details, mark the route as less transparent rather than assuming it is superior.
- Check protections. Verify slippage tolerance, minimum output, deadline or expiration, token approval requirements and whether the quote is soft or a signed order commitment.
- Refresh immediately before signing. Recheck the quote because reserves, gas and solver availability can change. Do not rely on a route selected earlier in the day.
- Compare the execution model. A solver route can draw on inventory that an AMM-only router cannot, while an AMM route gives you a more explicit on-chain path. Choose based on the net result and the failure protections, not on the label.
For UniswapX specifically, the API documentation describes a soft quote followed by a hard quote when you sign an order. Read the current behavior at the API routing guide.
Does splitting a swap always reduce slippage?
No. Splitting can lower price impact when liquidity is fragmented and the allocation is large enough to matter. But it can also add pool fees, calldata and gas. If the improvement in pool prices is smaller than those costs, the split produces less net output than a simpler route. The router’s displayed effective price is the relevant number; the count of pools is only a clue about how that number was produced.
For a small trade, a direct pool with adequate depth may be cheaper. For a large trade, test a split route and compare the final receive amount after every fee. The break-even point changes with the pair, network conditions and current liquidity.

How to read a route that failed or changed
The quote disappeared
Usually the route was no longer available: pool reserves moved, gas changed, or no solver accepted the order. Refresh the quote and verify that the minimum-output and expiration settings are still appropriate. Do not repeatedly sign stale transactions.
The transaction used a different-looking path
Some interfaces present a high-level route while the settled transaction contains several contract calls. Compare the transaction’s actual calldata and the interface’s route view where available. A changed path can be normal when the quote was recomputed; it is not evidence by itself of a worse execution.
The received amount was below the estimate
Check the minimum-output protection, slippage setting, token transfer taxes, and whether the displayed estimate excluded a service or network fee. For an intent, distinguish the solver’s promised output from a preliminary indicative quote. If the transaction reverted, inspect the wallet or explorer error before retrying with a wider slippage limit; widening protection can expose you to a worse fill.
A solver route was unavailable
Solvers can decline orders or lack inventory. If the interface offers an AMM fallback, compare its complete net output and protections rather than assuming the fallback is inferior. A direct AMM transaction may be preferable when its quote is clear and the solver premium is small.
What current evidence says about “the best” aggregator
There is no supported universal winner. A March 2, 2025 preprint by Yuki Yuminaga, Dex Chen and Danning Sui, Execution Welfare Across Solver-based DEXes, found solver-based protocols improved execution welfare over vanilla Uniswap V2/V3 routing in some tested trade-size ranges. The effect was stronger for USDC-WETH than for PEPE-WETH, and outcomes differed among CoW Swap, 1inch Fusion and UniswapX. The authors also discuss possible inefficiencies related to solver-market structure and inventory depth. Those results cover two asset profiles and the study’s methodology; they are not a current market-wide ranking. See the full paper at arXiv.
Vendor explanations are useful for understanding mechanisms but should not be read as independent performance tests. 1inch describes Pathfinder as searching paths across DEXs and liquidity depths at its Pathfinder help page. Its fee guidance notes that some intent-based or resolver fills cover gas while DEX-aggregator transactions can pass network gas and infrastructure fees to the user; the applicable charge depends on the product path. A practical decision rule
- Prefer the route with the highest expected net output after all stated costs, not the route with the most hops or the highest gross token price.
- For larger trades, pay particular attention to split routes and solver inventory because a single shallow pool can create severe price impact.
- For smaller trades, reject extra hops when their price improvement does not clearly exceed their additional fees and network cost.
- Use route transparency and minimum-output protections as tie-breakers when two quotes are close.
- Requote at execution time; routing is a snapshot of live liquidity and solver availability, not a permanent service ranking.

Is a solver route better than an AMM route?
