The catch: a CoinGecko study of eight centralized exchanges found that Ether’s near-price order-book depth was only about 35%–45% of Bitcoin’s comparable depth, down from at least 60% in the comparable 2025 period. That is a gap between price performance and trading capacity—not evidence that Ether was broadly untradeable or that its rally was about to reverse.
How could Ether outperform while its liquidity weakened?
Price return and order-book depth measure different things. Return describes how much an asset’s price changed over a period; depth estimates the value of resting buy and sell orders available close to the current price. A strong quarter for price does not require a proportionately deep order book.

CoinDesk reported that Ether gained 70% in Q3 2026, compared with Bitcoin’s 42%. Separately, CoinGecko’s report, updated September 30, 2026, found Ether’s median depth around the 0.15% price level was $13 million–$14 million—roughly 35%–45% of Bitcoin’s comparable depth. In the report’s comparable 2025 period, Ether depth had been at least 60% of Bitcoin’s.
What order-book depth tells you
Depth is the dollar value of limit orders sitting in the book near the market price. More nearby orders can absorb a larger trade before the price moves substantially; in a thinner book, an order of the same size may move through available prices more quickly, increasing price impact or slippage.

Depth is not the same as trading volume, market capitalization, or all liquidity available to a trader. It captures resting orders in a specified range and venue sample. It can change quickly as orders are added or canceled, so the figures describe the measured books rather than a permanent condition.
What CoinGecko measured—and what it did not
CoinGecko examined trading depth on eight selected centralized exchanges, using narrow bands around market prices to assess how much capital was available close to the market. The ETH/BTC comparison cited in its report is at the 0.15% level, approximately within $3 of ETH’s price and $100 of BTC’s price. It is not a survey of every exchange, decentralized venues, over-the-counter trading, or every moment of the quarter.

Despite Ether’s weaker depth relative to Bitcoin, seven of the eight exchanges had more than $1 million of Ether depth on each side of the book at the measured range. MEXC was the outlier, at around $450,000. CoinGecko described Ether as “fairly liquid at this range”; that qualification matters because it refers to the report’s defined band and exchange sample, not to every trade size or venue.
How Bitcoin and other assets compare
Bitcoin had a median cumulative depth of $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side across the same eight selected exchanges, nearly 50% above the prior-year comparison, according to CoinGecko. Binance accounted for 25.3% of the measured BTC liquidity, with $7.3 million in bids and $8.3 million in asks. Those figures describe Bitcoin’s measured book, not Ether’s.

Other assets in the report provide context, but their quoted ranges differ from the ETH/BTC comparison:
- SOL: depth declined from around $28 million on each side in 2025 to around $20 million in 2026.
- XRP: at the cited 2% range, bids were close to $18 million and asks around $14 million, for overall depth of about $30 million. CoinGecko also noted that XRP’s market capitalization was about 40% larger than SOL’s even though SOL had roughly 25% more average daily volume.
For Ether specifically, Binance was the deepest venue within the cited approximately ±$3 range, followed by Bitget and OKX. CoinGecko noted that Bitget’s depth increases at wider ranges, another reason the chosen band affects comparisons.

What the divergence does—and does not—mean
The figures show that Ether’s price performance in Q3 and its relative near-price book depth moved in different directions when compared with Bitcoin. They do not explain why Ether’s relative depth fell, establish that thinner depth caused its rally, or predict a reversal. A thinner book can make prices more sensitive to orders, but this study does not show what price move, if any, followed from that sensitivity.
