Eternals: AI Safety, Consciousness, the Fermi Paradox—and the Meaning of “Lead”

Eternals can be read through several real-world ideas, but the connections are interpretations, not confirmed explanations of what the filmmakers intended. Phastos’s story invites a comparison with technology governance; the Uni-Mind resembles a question consciousness theories try to address; and the Celestial emergence premise can be set beside the Fermi paradox’s Great Filter. The fourth term, “lead,” needs untangling: it can mean the film’s lead character or the metal, but the available evidence does not connect the Ebony Blade’s curse to lead poisoning.

What does “lead” mean in the title?

There are two plausible readings: the lead character in an ensemble, or the metal lead. They lead to different answers.

Sersi is the lead character; Ajak leads the team

In Disney’s 2021 account of the film, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige identifies Sersi, played by Gemma Chan, as the ensemble’s lead character. Ajak, played by Salma Hayek, is the Eternals’ leader within the story. Keeping those roles distinct avoids treating “the lead” as a single, unambiguous position.

The same Disney account describes the Eternals as heroes from beyond the stars who have protected Earth across 7,000 years. That is story context, not a scientific statistic.

The lead-poisoning connection is not established

If “lead” means the metal, the proposed connection appears to be between lead poisoning and the Ebony Blade’s curse. The available film-related material does not establish that the blade contains lead, that lead explains a character’s behavior, or that a real clinical effect is meant to correspond to the fictional curse. Without reliable evidence for those links, it would be misleading to present lead poisoning as a hidden explanation in the film.

Does Phastos’s story connect to AI safety?

Phastos is an inventor whose work affects human societies, and the film’s character discussion describes him wrestling with how people use technology. That makes his story a useful lens on technology governance: how to manage powerful tools when their broader effects are difficult to predict or control.

The closer parallel is the control dilemma

The control dilemma, associated with David Collingridge, describes a timing problem. Early in a technology’s development, it may be relatively easy to change, but its consequences are uncertain. Later, when its effects become clearer, the technology may be deeply embedded and harder to alter. Phastos’s relationship with invention can be read against that dilemma: creating something consequential does not mean its future use will stay within the creator’s control.

This is an analogy to technology ethics, not evidence that Phastos represents modern AI safety research. The cited 2016 technology-governance framework concerns experimental technologies broadly; it does not establish that Eternals depicts AI safety, or that its filmmakers intended this specific connection. The comparison is most useful as a question the story raises—who bears responsibility for a technology’s downstream effects?—rather than as a claim about the film’s source or scientific content.

What does the Uni-Mind have to do with consciousness theory?

The Uni-Mind is a fictional way for separate Eternals to act together as a collective. That premise can prompt a comparison with Integrated Information Theory (IIT), a theoretical account of consciousness, but a shared superhero ability is not evidence for a theory of mind.

What IIT proposes

In his 2004 paper, “An information integration theory of consciousness,” Giulio Tononi proposed describing a system’s consciousness in terms of Φ (phi), a measure of causally effective information integrated across that system. Put simply, the theory asks whether a system’s parts form a causally integrated whole, rather than merely operating as separate components.

The Uni-Mind offers a fictional image of collective action; IIT makes a theoretical claim about how consciousness might be characterized. Those are not the same thing. Researchers continue to debate how Φ should be interpreted and how well it captures consciousness, as discussed in a 2018 paper on integrated information and group interaction. IIT is not settled consensus, and the film cannot validate it.

Does the Celestial emergence premise answer the Fermi paradox?

The Fermi paradox is commonly framed as a tension: if technological civilizations could become widespread or expansive, why have we not observed evidence of them? The Great Silence refers to the lack of successful SETI detections to date. Neither phrase establishes that extraterrestrial civilizations exist or that a particular explanation for their absence is correct.

The Great Filter is a framework, not a finding

The Great Filter is a proposed way to think about whether some difficult or rare stage prevents life from developing into civilizations that expand across the galaxy or leave detectable traces. The film’s revelation that Earth’s living population serves a cosmic reproductive process can be read as a science-fictional version of such a barrier: a powerful force shapes the fate of worlds before their civilizations can freely choose their future.

That resemblance is imaginative, not observational. The Celestial mechanism is not evidence about the universe, and it does not solve the Fermi paradox. A 2025 reassessment of the “hard-steps” model discusses the broader question of difficult stages in the evolution of intelligent life; it does not turn Eternals’ plot into a scientific explanation.

How to tell a useful parallel from an overstated one

These connections work best when the film’s fictional premise and the real-world idea remain separate. Disney’s 2021 cast-and-crew account supplies context for character framing and themes; the scientific and ethical ideas come from separate works, including Tononi’s 2004 paper, a 2016 technology-governance framework, a 2018 discussion of integrated information, and a 2025 reassessment of the hard-steps model.

Quick Recap

  • Technology governance: Phastos’s story raises questions about control and responsibility; it does not establish an intended AI-safety allegory.
  • Consciousness: The Uni-Mind is a metaphorical point of comparison for collective integration; it is not a test of IIT.
  • Cosmic life: The Celestial premise resembles a Great Filter scenario; it is not an explanation supported by astronomical observation.
  • Lead: Sersi is identified as the ensemble’s lead character, while Ajak leads the team in the story; a link between lead poisoning and the Ebony Blade’s curse remains unsubstantiated.
