What this project is—and what it is not
This is a community-made static recompilation: GameCube game code is rebuilt to run natively on modern hardware instead of being executed through a conventional emulator. It is not a commercial remaster, a Nintendo release, or a downloadable copy of the game. The repositories do not provide the game image or proprietary assets.

The project uses the graphics, sound and music from the disc image you provide. That keeps the distribution separate from the original copyrighted game, but it also means you need a legally obtained disc and a compatible dump before setup can work.

“4K 60fps” should therefore be read as the author’s stated PS5 target, not as a measured guarantee across every scene, display or release. The project is active and may change quickly.

Which disc image do you need?
The announcement for the playable build names GEDP01, the European GameCube release, as the required disc image and explicitly says the USA disc is not supported. Dump your own legally purchased European disc rather than downloading an image from an unofficial source.
There is an important technical distinction in the project materials. The matching decompilation repository identifies the US release code, GEDE01, revision 0, as its target and also requires a legally obtained matching image. That repository target does not override the announced build’s stated GEDP01 requirement. Before launching, check the release notes and documentation for the exact build you downloaded; using the wrong region or revision can prevent booting or produce incorrect behavior.

How to approach installation safely
- Get the correct original disc. For the announced build, use a legally obtained European GEDP01 copy.
- Create your own disc image. Keep the dump unchanged and retain a backup. Do not use an image downloaded from a file-sharing site.
- Download the matching release for your platform. Choose the PS5, Windows, Mac or Linux package supplied by the project, and read its release notes for region and revision requirements.
- Place the image where the build expects it. The program should validate or load the supplied game data; if it does not, recheck the filename, format and region before changing anything else.
- Configure controls and display options. Select 16:9, remap aim or movement controls, and add PNG/DDS textures only after the base game launches correctly.
- Report reproducible problems. Version 0.8 is explicitly a feedback-driven release. Include your platform, build number, disc region and a clear description of what happened.

A boot milestone dated 2026-08-11 records the game reaching its title screen on PC through DolRecomp and RecompCore with zero interpreter fallback for guest CPU execution. Reaching the title screen is not the same as completing the campaign, and the announcement says the public release is version 0.8 because it has not yet been fully finished.

What can go wrong
The game will not boot
First verify the region and revision. A USA GEDE01 image is specifically reported as unsupported by the announced build, while the decompilation repository documents that US target separately. Confirm that your release expects GEDP01 and that the dump was created correctly.

Steam Deck gameplay is unstable
Steam Deck testing has been reported, but the author has not completed a full playthrough of version 0.8. Expect undiscovered bugs, keep regular saves, and report a reproducible issue with the exact build and hardware context.
Textures or widescreen look wrong
Launch the unmodified build first. Then enable the native 16:9 option and add a texture pack in the supported PNG or DDS format. Mixing files from another release can create missing textures or visual glitches.

This recompilation is the most direct route to a modern, native presentation of Eternal Darkness on PS5 and several computers, with reported 4K/60 output, widescreen support and modern controls. Treat it as active version-0.8 software, not a finished remaster: use the correct legally dumped disc, resolve the European-versus-US documentation discrepancy before installation, and expect bugs until a complete playthrough and independent performance testing are available.
