Eternal Anima, Marvelous’s upcoming time-traveling JRPG, is scheduled for worldwide release on March 4, 2027. It will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Formerly shown under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG, the game combines a generation-spanning story with turn-based battles built around prediction and interruption.
What is Eternal Anima?
Eternal Anima is a narrative-focused Japanese role-playing game set across past and present eras. Marvelous describes a journey through four lost continents, multiple cultures and a succession of ancestors and descendants whose lives are connected across time. The central premise is summarized by the publisher’s line: “To free the present, one must save the past…”

You play as Wade, a character from the floating kingdom of Urvis Ael, described as the last bastion in a world consumed by an endless sea. Wade challenges a prohibition on progress, is branded a heretic and flees toward the Forbidden Seas. His search moves between the present and earlier eras, where decisions made by one generation can change the conditions inherited by another.
The project is positioned as a modern take on the golden-era JRPGs of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Marvelous pairs that influence with contemporary visuals and tactical systems. The final game’s quality, pacing and balance cannot be judged until it is released, but its announced mechanics give it a more specific identity than a conventional time-travel plot.

How time travel affects the world
Changing the present through the past
Time travel is presented as an active gameplay system rather than a cutscene device. Wade visits earlier eras, works with ancestors and descendants, and takes actions whose consequences appear in the present. That structure should make exploration consequential: a location, relationship or problem encountered later can depend on what the player did generations earlier.
Marvelous has not yet published a complete list of historical branches, limits or irreversible choices. What is confirmed is the basic cause-and-effect loop: investigate the past, act within it, then return to a present shaped by those actions.
Psychometry turns objects into progression tools
Wade’s Psychometry ability lets him read memories embedded in objects. These visions are not only lore entries. They can connect him to heroes from the past and allow him to inherit their abilities and classes.
That makes an artifact potentially valuable in two ways. It can explain who lived in a place or why an event occurred, while also expanding Wade’s combat options. Exploration and character development are therefore linked: finding and examining the right object may unlock a predecessor’s role for Wade’s own toolkit.

How combat works
Turn-based battles with Future Sight
Eternal Anima uses classic turn-based combat, but its command system includes a prediction layer called Future Sight. Players can examine upcoming enemy actions, anticipate the battle sequence and choose commands that delay or cancel an opponent’s move.
Rather than simply selecting the strongest attack each round, the player is expected to manage the order of events. A defensive action may be worthwhile if it prevents a dangerous attack; an interruption can create an opening for a larger combination; and postponing an enemy turn can change which character gets to act next. The announced system makes the flow of combat a tactical puzzle without removing the clarity of turn-based commands.
What remains unconfirmed
Marvelous has confirmed the prediction and interruption concepts, but detailed rules—such as exact cancellation costs, turn-order limits, difficulty settings and the full range of party abilities—have not been disclosed. Official material also does not yet establish how much party customization will be available beyond Wade’s inherited classes and abilities.

Story, setting and creative team
The game’s setting combines a threatened present with a history that can still be changed. Urvis Ael’s floating kingdom survives above an endless sea, while Wade’s forbidden journey leads toward continents and eras that hold the origins of the current crisis. The generational structure gives the story a clear thematic focus: knowledge, skills and consequences pass from ancestors to descendants.

Marvelous has attached several experienced creators. Katsuhisa Higuchi is director, Keisuke Makino is story concept writer and Kazushige Nojima is scenario writer. Their involvement will interest players who follow story-driven JRPG production, although credits alone do not guarantee the eventual quality or balance of the finished game.

Should you preorder Eternal Anima?
Preordering makes the most sense for players who specifically want the limited physical extras or who already know they will play a time-focused, story-heavy JRPG at launch. The standard edition is the simpler choice if the soundtrack, cards and art book are not important to you. Waiting is more sensible if you want reviews, performance information or a clearer explanation of party customization and Future Sight’s detailed rules.
The strongest reasons to watch the game are its connected-era structure, Psychometry’s link between lore and character progression, and Future Sight’s promise of controllable turn order. Those are announced design goals, not independent evidence that every system will be perfectly balanced on release day.
