Eternal Anima is Marvelous’ new turn-based JRPG, launching worldwide on March 4, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Its defining systems are Future Sight Battles, which let players rewrite predicted enemy actions, and Psychometry, which lets protagonist Wade inherit classes and skills from memories embedded in objects. An October 16, 2026 interview with producer Makoto Shioda and director Katsuhisa Higuchi also explains how the game’s time-travel story makes the past directly reshape the present.
What the interview reveals about Eternal Anima
The project began after producer Makoto Shioda wrote a proposal for a new JRPG and director Katsuhisa Higuchi responded to it. The supplied English spelling of Shioda’s surname has not been definitively confirmed by Marvelous’ first-party material; the Japanese interview identifies him as 塩田誠. Higuchi’s Japanese name is 樋口勝久.

Shioda describes the project as an “adult” team making the kind of JRPG it wanted to play itself. The developers chose inheritance as a central theme because adults can engage with the idea through lived experience: what people receive from those before them, what they pass on, and what they choose to change.
The team established two pillars early: an overhead dramatic story and turn-based command battles. As development continued, the tone became more adult. That does not mean the game is presented as a realistic drama; it means its conflicts are built around responsibility, history and the consequences of decisions across generations.

Release date, platforms and physical editions
Marvelous lists a worldwide release date of March 4, 2027. Its release information lists the U.S. Steam launch at 3:00 a.m. on March 5, so PC players should check the store’s local countdown rather than assume every platform unlocks at the same clock time.

How Future Sight Battles work
Future Sight is the combat system’s central information-and-intervention loop. At the start of each turn, the game shows when enemies are expected to act and what outcome their actions are predicted to produce. You then choose commands that respond to that forecast rather than simply selecting attacks in isolation.

Read the forecast
The display can reveal an incoming attack, its place in the action order and the projected result. That gives you a chance to identify which threat matters most before committing the party’s commands.
Rewrite the displayed future
Commands can make a character act first, delay an enemy action or cancel it altogether. In other words, the forecast is not a fixed sequence that you merely observe. Your choices can rewrite the future shown on screen, allowing you to turn a dangerous enemy turn into an opportunity.
Use Break to change timing
A hands-on report from an approximately one-hour media session found that Future Sight interacts with the Break system. Hitting weaknesses can push an enemy’s planned action later in the order, giving the party additional time to interrupt or defeat it. The report describes the resulting battles as tense and turn-by-turn: a mistake can cost a character’s life.

Psychometry turns objects into a character-growth system
Wade possesses Psychometry, an ability that reads memories held in objects. Those memories connect him to heroes from the past, allowing him to inherit their jobs or classes and the skills associated with them.
The system is more than a succession of preset character swaps. Wade can combine inherited classes and abilities into an individual battle style. That links exploration, story history and party customization: objects carry traces of earlier lives, and those traces become practical options in combat.

Wade questions that system, making the conflict both political and personal. The story’s argument is not simply that the past is good or the future is good; it asks who gets to decide what should be preserved and what should change.
A concrete change to the timeline
Higuchi gives one example of the game’s time-travel consequences. After visiting a ruined continent’s past and saving it from sinking, the player returns to a present in which that continent survives. Descendants of companions from the earlier era can then become party members.
This example establishes a direct cause-and-effect structure: an action in the past changes geography and society in the present, and that altered present opens encounters that otherwise would not exist. Higuchi says additional player-driven changes are being held for later announcements, so the full scope of the timeline’s branching or alteration remains unknown.
Why the developers put so much emphasis on combat
Higuchi’s battle philosophy is unusually explicit. In the interview coverage, he says, “I used to think an RPG is 70 or 80 percent battle,” then qualifies the statement by explaining that battle is the element that determines how interesting an RPG becomes. That is why the team was particularly demanding about the command system.
Future Sight reflects that priority. Instead of treating turn order as background arithmetic, it makes timing the player’s main problem: identify the most dangerous predicted action, decide whether to interrupt it or exploit it, and account for how Break changes the sequence. The game’s dramatic story and its inheritance theme therefore feed directly into the battle design rather than existing as separate layers.
