A sky city built on a drowned world
Eternal Anima takes place in Urbis Ael, a city suspended above an endless sea after the world’s four major continents sink. Its rulers treat calls for reform as a threat and punish people who seek a different future.

Wade, the protagonist, is branded a rebel and heretic. He leaves Urbis Ael and enters the forbidden sea, searching for the truth behind the vanished continents. His journey lets him move between the past and present, where he tries to reach civilizations before the catastrophes that destroy them.

That setup makes the game’s main conflict more specific than ordinary time travel. Wade is not simply visiting historical eras; he is testing whether a future presented as inevitable can be changed at all. The story’s driving question is whether he can alter the world’s fate or watch it succumb to the same doomed outcome again.

Veteran creators give the project a classic-JRPG foundation
Marvelous has assembled a team with credits across several influential role-playing series. Katsuhisa Higuchi has worked on Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears. Kazushige Nojima is known for writing on Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, while Keisuke Makino worked on Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 5.
The publisher positioning, reproduced by Maxi-Geek, describes the game as “an epic where players must save the past to free the present,” combining visuals inspired by the golden age of RPGs with modern design sensibilities. Those credits establish the project’s creative lineage, but they do not guarantee a particular story quality or combat outcome before release.

The important distinction is that classes are connected to equipment and the memories attached to it. A weapon is therefore more than a statistical upgrade: it can expose a personal history and expand Wade’s available abilities. The revealed example suggests exploration and character development are linked, with discoveries in the world feeding directly into combat options.
Future Sight previews enemy actions
Future Sight adds a planning layer to otherwise traditional turn-based battles. Wade can see when enemies are expected to act and the predicted result of each turn. Players can then change commands to prepare for an attack, interrupt it or avoid the displayed outcome.
This system is designed to make the turn order readable before actions resolve. Whether it creates genuinely meaningful decisions rather than extra menu navigation will depend on how varied the predictions are and how much the player can alter them across different encounters.

Turn-based battles reward timing and defense
Combat uses conventional turn-based commands, but several mechanics shape the order in which players approach a fight:

- Guarding, breaking and defeating: these actions generate points that fuel abilities.
- Instant victories: enemies far below the party’s strength may be defeated immediately instead of triggering a full encounter.
The result is a system that combines deliberate command selection with resource management. Players must decide whether to spend turns defending, breaking an opponent’s defenses or pressing for a quick defeat so they can build the points needed for stronger abilities.

The preview session features three characters. Wade is joined by M.O.S. (Magick-Operated Sentinel), a robot, and Neria, the expedition leader. Martii joins later and contributes elemental attacks and healing abilities.

Those roles imply a party that can combine Wade’s class options with M.O.S.’s mechanical identity, Neria’s expedition expertise and Martii’s elemental support. The available information does not establish the complete roster, final skill trees or whether every character can use the equipment-based class system.

The first three differences are part of the announced design. The fourth is the key question for later hands-on coverage: a forecast system matters only if players have enough meaningful ways to respond to it.

Marvelous announced Eternal Anima on September 12, 2026. The game is planned for simultaneous release on the following platforms:

The announcement confirms physical standard and Limited Edition plans for PS5 and Switch 2. Regional availability, contents, pricing and retailer inventory still need to be confirmed before ordering.
What is still unknown
No sales forecast, budget, review score or player-count figure has been published in the available announcements. The game’s full cast, the range of historical eras, the limits of Wade’s ability to change events and the final details of the Limited Editions also remain undisclosed.
For now, Eternal Anima stands out because its premise and systems point in the same direction: objects preserve personal history, Future Sight exposes an expected future, and Wade’s journey asks whether either can be rewritten. Its success will depend on how convincingly those ideas connect once the complete game is available.
