ETERNAL ANIMA is the new time-travel role-playing game directed by Katsuhisa Higuchi, a former lead programmer on Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy titles. Rather than revisiting those games, Higuchi and producer Makoto Shioda are building an original command-based JRPG around a forecastable battle timeline, a drowned world and a story that connects its past directly to its ruined present.
Release date, platforms and what has been announced
Marvelous has announced ETERNAL ANIMA for March 4, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Famitsu lists the Steam release time as March 5 at 3:00 a.m.; the applicable regional time and any later schedule changes should be checked near launch.

Who is making ETERNAL ANIMA?
Higuchi directs the project after serving as a lead programmer on Chrono Trigger and working on Final Fantasy games. That background explains why the announcement has attracted attention, but ETERNAL ANIMA is not a sequel, remake or licensed continuation of Chrono Trigger. The connection is creative context: a veteran developer known for classic JRPG production is applying his own ideas to a new world and combat system.

Producer Makoto Shioda described the project’s starting point as “the JRPG that we want to play,” while retaining respect for the genre’s classic forms. Higuchi said the team wanted to make the game they themselves wanted to play while keeping it accessible to a broad audience.
“I believe that adventure and combat go hand in hand. In particular, I think battles account for 70 to 80 percent of what makes a JRPG enjoyable,” Higuchi said.
The 70-to-80-percent figure is Higuchi’s personal view of JRPG design, not an independent measurement.

A drowned world split between past and present
ETERNAL ANIMA takes place in Grastella, where the continents have sunk beneath the sea. Survivors live in the floating White City under a God-King who presents an unchanging society as an ideal and suppresses progress.
Wade’s exile
Wade begins as a White City security officer who has lost more than three years of his memory. After awakening the ability to read memories left in objects, he becomes an outcast, escapes into the forbidden sea and starts a journey across four lost continents.
How the time travel works
The story pairs each location’s past with its later, ruined state. Players first encounter a continent in an earlier era and then see the consequences in the present, allowing Wade’s actions to alter history and change what the future looks like.

Higuchi said time travel is restricted to the main story rather than being an unrestricted system available everywhere. That structure is intended to keep the narrative understandable and avoid contradictions and time paradoxes. The game’s thematic keywords are “inheritance” and “evolution,” expressed through the relationship between what earlier generations leave behind and what later characters do with it.
Future Sight turns command battles into timeline decisions
The defining combat feature is called Future Sight Battles. Before committing commands, the player can see the upcoming turn’s timeline, including when enemies will act, which attacks they will use, who will be targeted and how much damage is predicted.
Changing the forecast
That preview is not a guaranteed solution. It shows the visible turn’s expected outcome, but the player still has to decide which threat to interrupt and which damage to accept. Later turns remain uncertain enough to require planning.

- Attacking an enemy’s weakness pushes it backward on the timeline.
- Pushing an enemy completely off the timeline triggers a Break, removing that enemy’s action for the turn.
- The forecast reduces random-damage and evasion uncertainty for the displayed turn, making command selection more deliberate.
- BP builds through actions and can strengthen commands or unlock character-specific finishing moves.
- MP and other resources remain limited, so a perfect forecast does not remove resource management.
The result is a classic turn-command structure with an added layer of forecast manipulation. The important question is not simply which attack produces the largest number, but whether a weakness hit can delay an enemy, create a Break or preserve resources for the next sequence.

Wade’s Psychometry
Wade’s Psychometry, written as 読思術 in Japanese materials, lets him read the memory contained in a relic. Those memories can grant him a dead hero’s job, skills or special attack. Exploration therefore expands Wade’s command list as well as the set of party strategies available to the player.

Companions and M.O.S.
Characters other than Wade gain abilities through leveling and can be customized by choosing which abilities to equip and the order in which to equip them. M.O.S., the party’s automaton, uses a different system: its parts can be swapped to create different configurations. The party is therefore not built from one universal job menu; it combines Wade’s relic-based inheritance, companions’ ability loadouts and M.O.S.’s hardware choices.
Why the Chrono Trigger comparison is useful—and where it stops
The comparison helps identify the project’s lineage: Higuchi worked on Chrono Trigger, ETERNAL ANIMA uses a traditional command-battle framework and both connect adventure with time. It does not establish that the new game shares characters, canon, setting or mechanics with Square’s classic. ETERNAL ANIMA’s distinctive idea is the visible combat forecast and the ability to manipulate that forecast, while its story limits time travel to structured narrative sequences.
Development history and design audience
The project was first shown in 2023 under the working label “PROJECT LIFE is RPG.” It received the ETERNAL ANIMA title in September 2026. Shioda told 4Gamer that the initial proposal had been written more than five years before the 2026 interview. The core concept remained, while the battle system and visual presentation changed substantially during development.
