The differences in weight are measurement differences, not necessarily a change of model: Essteele lists 1.12kg, while CHOICE reports 0.9kg for its measured sample. Use the dimensions and weight as planning figures, and expect packaging or production tolerances to affect what you see on a kitchen scale.
Why the 26cm label does not mean a 26cm cooking zone
A pan’s advertised diameter is usually taken at the rim. CHOICE measured this skillet’s flat base at 20cm, so the area in direct contact with the cooktop and the area that stays truly flat for food is considerably smaller than a 26cm circle. That distinction affects both portion size and pan selection.
- Suitable scale: one large portion, two modest portions, eggs, a couple of chops, or a small quantity of vegetables.
- Potentially restrictive: crowded batches, several large pieces of meat, or recipes where ingredients must remain in a single uncrowded layer.
- Induction planning: compare the cooktop’s active-zone diameter with the measured base, not only the 26cm rim marking.
The 20cm figure is a CHOICE measurement, not a promise of a particular heating pattern. It tells you how to compare physical footprint with another pan; it does not establish searing speed, edge temperature or cooking uniformity.

The body is aluminium; CHOICE identifies its sample as cast aluminium. Aluminium keeps the listed pan weight below many heavy cast-iron alternatives, while the cast form gives the pan a rigid body. The interior is described by Essteele as diamond-reinforced nonstick with a DuraShield barrier. Those terms are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent evidence of coating life, scratch resistance or release performance after prolonged use.
There is no lid in the package. If you need to steam, simmer covered or contain splatter, you would have to use a separately purchased lid that fits the actual rim. Because the available measurements do not provide a lid diameter or a guaranteed universal fit, check the rim in person rather than assuming any 26cm lid will seal.

CHOICE reports a slightly concave base when heated. That is a recorded observation from its listing, not a cooking-performance score. A heated pan can behave differently from a cold pan, so place it on the cooktop before judging whether the base sits as expected and follow the maker’s heating guidance.
Cooktop and oven compatibility
Essteele lists the skillet for electric, gas and induction cooktops. Induction users should still check that their particular hob recognises the pan and that its 20cm measured base suits the active zone. On a large induction ring, a smaller base can leave part of the zone unused; on a small ring, the fit may be closer.

The manufacturer sets the oven limit at 180°C / 350°F. The phenolic handle and nonstick construction make that limit especially important: do not treat the pan as an unrestricted high-temperature roasting vessel. The listing does not establish broiler, grill or open-flame-in-oven permissions beyond the stated oven rating, so avoid those modes unless Essteele’s current care documentation specifically permits them.
The pan has a long handle and no lid, so account for handle clearance when transferring it to an oven. Use a dry, heat-resistant mitt when removing it; the handle indicator is a temperature cue, not a substitute for safe handling.
Thermotech handle indicator: useful cue, not a performance test
Essteele says the Thermotech handle indicator button turns green when it is time to start cooking. This is a manufacturer-stated feature intended to help with preheating. The available evidence does not independently establish the indicator’s calibration, response time or behaviour on every cooktop.

Use it as an additional visual cue while still following a recipe and controlling heat normally. It does not tell you that oil is at a particular temperature, that food will release perfectly or that the pan is safe to touch. The CHOICE listing also records a Thermotech handle, confirming that this design element was present on the measured sample.
Care and cleaning requirements
Essteele’s product page says “Dishwasher Safe No,” and the Per Salute care PDF states, “This product is not dishwasher safe.” CHOICE’s table contains a contradictory field showing “Yes (handwashing recommended).” For ownership decisions, the product-specific maker guidance is the safer authority: plan to wash this skillet by hand.
- Let the pan cool before washing; sudden temperature changes can stress cookware and make handling unsafe.
- Use warm water, a small amount of mild dish detergent and a soft sponge or cloth.
- Rinse away detergent and dry the pan thoroughly before storing it.
- Keep abrasive powders, steel wool, scouring pads and metal scraping tools away from the nonstick surface.
- If pans are stacked, place a soft separator between them so another pan does not rub against the coating.
Handwashing is an ownership requirement rather than a claim that the coating will last a particular number of years. No independent coating-life test, replacement schedule or quantified release result is published in the available materials. Treat the nonstick surface as a consumable finish: avoid unnecessary high heat, and replace the pan if the coating becomes visibly damaged or food no longer releases safely.
What the available evidence says about cooking performance
The CHOICE page provides measured dimensions, weight, base thickness and the heated-base observation, but not a visible score or recommendation. Essteele lists the external size as 26W × 45L × 8.4Hcm and the weight as 1.12kg. The 45cm length includes the handle, so measure your cupboard, drawer or pan rack before buying. CHOICE measured 0.9kg for its sample, which may feel noticeably lighter when lifting a pan full of food.
The aluminium body and moderate listed weight should appeal to cooks who do not want the heft of traditional cast iron. On the other hand, a lighter pan can shift more easily when you stir or flip food, particularly on a smooth glass cooktop. Keep the handle aligned safely and use the second hand under the pan only with appropriate protection.

When reading retailer reviews, look for details that match your intended use: induction or another cooktop, the portion size cooked, cleaning routine and how long the reviewer owned the pan. Give more weight to specific, dated descriptions than to a one-line star rating, and remember that early impressions do not predict multi-year durability.
