The essential home-office “tools” are the adjustments and equipment that let your body, computer and workspace work together. Start by fitting the chair, desk, display, keyboard, mouse and lighting to your tasks and proportions; buy only what fixes a specific problem. A larger shopping list cannot compensate for a monitor that is too close, a chair that leaves your feet unsupported or a keyboard that forces your wrists to bend.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states that no single posture or component arrangement suits everyone. Its Computer Workstations eTool provides practical recommendations and checklists, not new legal requirements. Use the sequence below as a repeatable fitting process, then reassess whenever your work, equipment or body changes.

What a well-fitted home office should achieve
Before choosing products, define the physical result you want. In a neutral working position:
- Your head and neck stay balanced rather than tipped forward or twisted.
- Shoulders remain relaxed, with elbows close to your body.
- The lower back is supported and the legs are comfortable.
- Wrists stay straight in line with the forearms while typing and pointing.
- There is enough surface space for the keyboard and mouse without reaching.
- Both feet are supported on the floor or on a stable footrest.
- The screen is readable without leaning toward it, and lighting does not create reflections.
These are targets, not a rigid pose. Change position during the day, alternate tasks and use the settings that let you work comfortably for the longest periods.

Set up the workstation before you shop
Many improvements cost nothing. Clear desk depth, move the monitor, raise or lower the chair, reposition the keyboard and control window glare before ordering accessories. A new item earns its place only when the current arrangement cannot meet a specific fit or task requirement.
1. Clear the primary reach area
Reserve the space directly in front of you for the monitor, keyboard and pointing device. OSHA’s purchasing guidance calls for at least 20 inches between your eyes and the monitor, plus enough work surface for the monitor, keyboard and mouse. Remove stationery, docking hardware and other objects that force the input devices toward the desk edge or to one side.
2. Adjust the chair and back support
Set the seat so your feet rest comfortably on the floor and your lower back is supported by the chair’s backrest. The chair should support your back and legs while allowing you to reach the keyboard without lifting your shoulders. Coordinate chair height with desk and display placement rather than treating either item in isolation.

If the chair cannot support your back and legs at all, replacement is more appropriate than piling on cushions. When possible, try a chair for fit; generic dimensions do not suit every body type.
3. Position and size the display
Center the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away. OSHA’s monitor guidance gives a preferred viewing range of 20 to 40 inches. Set the top line of the screen at or below eye level, then adjust text size so you can read without leaning forward. A shorter user may need a lower surface or a different stand; a taller user may need elevation. Recheck the distance after changing text scaling or adding a second screen.

4. Place the keyboard and mouse together
Put the keyboard directly in front of your body, close enough that your elbows stay near your sides and your shoulders stay relaxed. Keep wrists in line with the forearms instead of bent upward, downward or sideways. Place the mouse immediately beside the keyboard in the same primary reach area. Reaching across a wide desk or placing the mouse above the keyboard encourages shoulder and wrist strain.
5. Correct reflections and contrast
Look at the dark screen before buying a filter or brighter lamp. Position the display at a right angle to windows and other bright sources so light does not strike the panel directly. Adjust blinds or curtains, move the desk, or diffuse the room light first. Use an adjustable task lamp for paper reading and writing, aiming it at the document rather than the display. The useful light is the light that improves the task without producing a bright reflection.

Essential equipment categories and when they solve a real problem
The following categories correspond to common fit failures. Compare the listed characteristics rather than assuming a particular product or style is best for everyone.
| Item | When it earns a place | Compare on |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable office chair | Your current chair cannot support your back and feet while you reach the keyboard comfortably. | Height range; seat depth; back and lumbar adjustment; armrest fit; stability; casters suited to the floor; trial or return option; compatibility with your body dimensions. |
| Monitor | A laptop display is too small, or the built-in screen cannot be placed at a comfortable distance and height for the task. | Readability; height and tilt adjustment; required desk depth; centered placement; glare control. |
| Monitor stand or riser | The screen is too low and needs elevation. | Stable fit; usable height; screen angle; whether the added height causes a new viewing-distance or glare problem. |
| External keyboard and mouse | Intensive laptop use makes the built-in keyboard and screen impossible to position independently. | Keyboard size and layout; hand fit; placement flexibility; mouse reach; personal preference. |
| Desk or height-adjustable surface | The current surface lacks monitor depth, input-device space, leg clearance or useful height adjustment. | Surface depth and width; leg clearance; keyboard height; stability; matte finish; adjustment range. |
| Task light | Paper tasks are hard to see, or room lighting creates contrast and visibility problems. | Adjustable position and intensity; broad coverage; diffusion or shade; ability to avoid screen reflections. |
| Footrest or keyboard tray | Chair and desk heights cannot support both feet and neutral input-device posture at the same time. | Stable support; adjustability; leg clearance; enough room for both keyboard and mouse on a tray. |
Do you need a separate keyboard and monitor for a laptop?
Not for every task. A laptop can work well for short sessions or light keyboard use when its screen and keyboard can be placed without forcing a bent neck or raised shoulders. For intensive keyboard work, OSHA recommends auxiliary full-size keyboards and monitors so the display and input devices can be positioned independently.
A practical arrangement is to place the external monitor directly ahead at the correct height and distance, then put the full-size keyboard and mouse close to your body. The laptop can remain open to the side for secondary information, or closed if your operating system and dock support that mode. Keep the active display centered; do not center your body on a screen that is used only occasionally.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Choosing the right desk and surface
A desk is an ergonomic component, not just a place to store equipment. Measure the depth from your eyes to the intended monitor position, leaving room for the keyboard and mouse between you and the screen. Check width for the monitor, documents and any laptop or dock you must keep available. Confirm that your knees and feet have clear space beneath the surface.
Height adjustment can help different users share a workstation, but a sit-stand surface is optional. Choose one only when changing position serves your workflow and the surface remains stable at every setting. A matte finish can reduce reflected light. A keyboard tray is useful only if it is large and stable enough for both keyboard and mouse and does not remove needed leg clearance.
Lighting, glare and the surrounding room
Window and overhead light
Place the monitor perpendicular to a window or bright light source, not directly facing or backed against it. If sunlight changes during the day, use blinds or curtains and check the screen at the times you normally work. Overhead fixtures can also reflect from a glossy panel; changing the screen angle or your desk orientation is usually more effective than adding a dark filter.
Task lighting for paper work
When reading printed material, use a lamp with adjustable position and intensity and aim it at the paper. Diffusion or a shade can soften harsh contrast. Keep the lamp outside the monitor’s reflection path. If the room is dim while the screen is bright, increase useful room or task light gradually rather than staring into a high-contrast setup.
Ventilation and comfort
OSHA’s workstation-environment guidance also addresses ventilation and general comfort. Keep vents and cooling equipment clear, and avoid arranging the desk where airflow, heat or glare makes you change posture continually. Environmental comfort is part of maintaining a usable workstation.

A maintenance routine that keeps the fit working
Ergonomics is not a one-time assembly job. Use this short review whenever you move the desk, change a monitor, update a laptop or notice discomfort:
- Confirm that the monitor is centered, at least 20 inches away, and readable without leaning. Check that its top line remains at or below eye level.
- Check chair height, back support and foot contact. Add or adjust a footrest if your feet are unsupported.
- Verify that the keyboard is directly in front, the mouse is close beside it and both wrists remain straight during normal typing and pointing.
- Look for new glare from seasonal sunlight, a moved lamp or a changed screen angle. Reorient or shade the source.
- Clear objects that have migrated into the primary reach area and restore adequate desk depth.
- After a work session, note which task or time of day causes you to lean, reach, shrug or twist. Adjust that element before buying another accessory.
OSHA provides workstation-evaluation and purchasing checklists for this kind of review. They are design aids, not a substitute for an individualized ergonomic assessment or medical advice.

“I lean toward the screen.”
Increase text size first, then verify the screen is at least 20 inches away and within the practical 20-to-40-inch viewing range. If the screen is too low, adjust its height or use a stable riser while preserving the correct distance.
“My shoulders or neck feel tense.”
Move the keyboard and mouse closer, lower the chair or input surface as needed, and keep elbows near your sides. Check that the monitor is centered so you are not rotating your head or torso.

“My feet do not reach the floor.”
Lower the chair if possible. If that makes the keyboard too high, use a stable footrest and reassess the desk and display together. Do not let unsupported feet pull you forward out of the chair’s back support.
“The screen is hard to see.”
Inspect reflections and contrast before replacing the monitor. Turn the display at a right angle to windows, adjust blinds, reposition the lamp and then change text size. A task light should illuminate paper without shining into the screen.
What OSHA’s guidance does—and does not—tell you
OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool presents basic design goals for monitors, chairs, desks, keyboards, lighting and related equipment. Its central qualification is that “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” The recommendations therefore describe useful ranges and adjustment principles rather than a universal blueprint.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The eTool does not create new OSHA requirements, and the retrieved pages do not display publication or revision dates. Treat measurements such as the 20-inch minimum viewing distance and 20-to-40-inch preferred range as guidance values, not population statistics or guarantees. Your task, body dimensions, vision and existing equipment determine the final arrangement.
When to replace equipment
Replace or add hardware when repeated adjustment cannot produce a stable fit. A chair is the priority if it cannot support your back and legs; try candidates where possible. Add a monitor when the laptop screen cannot be made readable at a comfortable height and distance. Add external input devices when intensive laptop work forces an unacceptable compromise between screen height and keyboard position. Choose a desk, tray, riser, footrest or lamp only when its dimensions solve the specific limitation you identified.
After each change, run the full setup sequence again. Raising a monitor can introduce glare, changing chair height can alter keyboard reach, and adding a tray can reduce leg clearance. The best home office is the one that remains adjustable as your work changes, not the one with the most accessories.
