The best first changes on an iPhone 17 Pro Max are not hidden performance tweaks. They are a privacy audit, a deliberate charging limit, and camera defaults that match how you shoot. In iOS 26, start at Settings > Privacy & Security, keep Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power enabled, and configure Settings > Camera > Formats and Preserve Settings before your next trip or photo session.

These choices involve trade-offs. Restricting permissions improves control but can remove convenience, a lower charge limit can reduce time spent at 100% but gives you less immediate runtime, and ProRAW preserves more editing information at the cost of storage and compatibility. The guide below gives exact paths and practical defaults for each priority.

1. Lock down privacy without breaking useful features

iOS places the main privacy controls in one area: Settings > Privacy & Security. Review access by category rather than accepting every prompt as it appears. The least-privilege rule is simple: grant the narrowest access that still lets an app do its job, then revisit that decision when your usage changes.

Audit location access app by app

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Review the list of apps and open each entry that has access.
  3. Choose While Using the App for features that need your position only during active use, or Never when location is not necessary.
  4. Keep continuous access only for an app whose core function genuinely needs it. If an app offers a separate precise-location switch, turn precision off when an approximate position is sufficient.

“While Using” is usually the useful middle ground: navigation and map tools can work when open, while an unrelated utility does not receive a constant location stream.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, US Version, 2TB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Stop unnecessary cross-app tracking

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Turn off requests from apps that have no convincing reason to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites. iOS requires an app to ask before that type of tracking; refusing a request does not prevent the app from functioning in its normal, first-party context.

Review photos, camera, microphone and contacts

From Settings > Privacy & Security, open each sensitive category and remove stale permissions:

  • Photos: use limited photo selection when an app needs to upload one image rather than your entire library.
  • Camera: allow it only for apps that capture photos, scan documents or make video calls.
  • Microphone: revoke access from apps that do not record audio or support voice features.
  • Contacts: deny access to one-off tools that do not need your address book.
  • Bluetooth: retain access for accessories and nearby-device functions you actually use.
  • Local Network: allow it for trusted apps that discover printers, displays or other devices on your home network.

Removing access can disable a specific feature, but it is reversible: return to the same category and switch the permission back on when needed.

Use App Privacy Report to verify behavior

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and turn it on if it is not already active. The report records how granted permissions are used and shows network activity, giving you evidence beyond an app’s permission request. Check it after several days of normal use; an isolated access event may be expected, while repeated access from an app you rarely open is a reason to revisit its permissions or remove it.

Understand the green indicator

A green indicator appears when an app is using the camera, including situations where the camera and microphone are used together. If it appears when you are not actively taking a photo, recording video or making a call, open Control Center to identify the recent camera or microphone use, then review that app’s permissions in Privacy & Security.

A practical privacy baseline

  • Location: While Using for navigation and other active-use tools; Never for apps with no location requirement.
  • Tracking: decline requests that provide no clear benefit.
  • Photos: grant selected items where possible.
  • Camera and microphone: allow only apps with a feature that needs them.
  • App Privacy Report: enable it and inspect activity periodically.

2. Set up battery controls for daily runtime and long-term health

The iPhone 17 Pro Max ships with Adaptive Power enabled by default. Apple says it can lower screen brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments to conserve power through the day. It may automatically enable Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%.

Keep Adaptive Power enabled

  1. Open Settings > Battery > Power Mode.
  2. Confirm Adaptive Power is on.
  3. Leave it enabled for normal use unless a particular task requires every available background or display resource.

This is the least disruptive battery setting because the phone applies reductions as needed instead of permanently disabling individual services.

Use Low Power Mode for predictable emergencies

For travel, a long shooting day or an unexpectedly fast drain, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and turn on Low Power Mode. It reduces background refresh, automatic downloads, email fetch, some visual effects and other activity. ProMotion may be limited to a 60 Hz refresh rate, so scrolling can look less fluid. Low Power Mode turns off after the iPhone is charged to 80% or higher.

Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode serve different purposes: Adaptive Power moderates consumption automatically, while Low Power Mode is a deliberate short-term battery reserve. If the phone is draining quickly, inspect usage before disabling features at random.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Silver- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

Find the real drain before changing more settings

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Review the daily usage graph and the apps listed beneath it.
  3. Tap an app with unusually high activity and distinguish on-screen use from background activity.
  4. Only then decide whether to reduce notifications, background refresh or location access for that app.

A high percentage can simply reflect heavy use of a camera, navigation or video app. The battery screen is more useful than a blanket rule that disables every background feature.

Choose a charging limit

Open Settings > Battery > Charging. The Charge Limit can be set from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. A lower limit reduces the time the battery remains fully charged; a 100% limit preserves maximum immediate runtime and keeps Optimized Battery Charging available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Charge Limit Best fit Trade-off
80–85% You usually have access to a charger and prioritize minimizing time at a full charge. Least emergency headroom for a long day away from power.
90–95% You want a compromise between battery-care goals and practical range. More runtime than an 80% limit, but more time at a high state of charge.
100% You routinely need the longest possible runtime. The phone can spend longer fully charged; Optimized Battery Charging may pause near 80% and finish close to your expected unplug time.

There is no universally correct percentage. Set the lowest limit that comfortably covers your normal day, then raise it before a trip or event when an outlet will be uncertain.

Keep heat away while charging

Apple advises avoiding sustained ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Do not leave the phone charging in direct sun, a hot vehicle or another environment above that threshold. If the device becomes hot, move it to a cooler place and postpone demanding games, video recording or other heavy tasks until its temperature falls.

3. Make camera settings consistent before you shoot

Camera defaults are easy to lose when you switch between quick snapshots, night scenes and high-resolution work. Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings lets the iPhone remember controls you intentionally set instead of returning to a default after each session.

Turn on only the controls you deliberately use

In Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings, enable the options that match your workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Photographic Style: keeps your chosen rendering rather than reverting to the default look.
  • Exposure: preserves a deliberate brightness adjustment.
  • Night mode: remembers your last Night mode choice where supported.
  • Macro: retains your macro preference where supported.
  • ProRAW & Resolution Control: remembers high-resolution or RAW selections.
  • ProRes: retains the video recording choice where supported.
  • Live Photo: keeps your preferred Live Photo state.

Preserving every option is not automatically better. If you occasionally enable ProRAW for a single subject, leaving that choice preserved can cause the next casual photo to create a much larger file. Enable preservation for controls you set intentionally and check the camera screen before an important shoot.

4. Choose ProRAW, 48 MP HEIF or 12 MP for the job

Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable ProRAW & Resolution Control when you need editing latitude or high-resolution output. On the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the available choices include 12 MP, 48 MP and HEIF 48 MP defaults.

Format What it prioritizes Use it when Cost or limitation
12 MP Smaller files and a simple everyday workflow. You share frequently, have limited storage or do not plan substantial editing. Less captured detail than a 48 MP option for large crops and prints.
48 MP Maximum resolution from the supported high-resolution capture mode. You need extra detail for cropping, large prints or careful editing. Larger files than 12 MP and more storage use; confirm the active mode before shooting.
HEIF 48 MP High resolution without a RAW editing workflow. You want 48 MP detail while keeping a conventional photo format. Live Photos are unavailable when HEIF Max is enabled.
ProRAW More image information and maximum flexibility for later adjustments. You will edit exposure, highlights, shadows or color seriously. Files are substantially larger than ordinary photos, and the RAW workflow needs compatible editing and storage.

Apple describes ProRAW photos as retaining more information, resulting in larger file sizes. That extra information is valuable only if you intend to edit it; for quick sharing, 12 MP or HEIF 48 MP is usually more practical.

Resolve the Live Photos conflict

Live Photos capture a short moment around the shutter, including audio. Apple states that Live Photos are unavailable when ProRAW or HEIF Max is turned on. Therefore, choose between motion memories and those high-resolution formats before shooting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use Live Photo for people, pets and spontaneous moments where movement and sound matter.
  • Use ProRAW when post-processing control matters more than a moving capture.
  • Use HEIF 48 MP when you want high resolution without RAW files, accepting that Live Photo capture is disabled.

5. Use the camera controls intentionally

Camera Control and the available zoom choices depend on the model and the mode currently selected. Treat them as shooting controls rather than permanent quality settings: choose the zoom that keeps your subject framed without unnecessary digital enlargement, and verify whether the camera is in a standard, Night, macro, ProRAW or high-resolution mode before pressing the shutter.

For repeatable results, combine an intentional mode with Preserve Settings. For example, a landscape session can retain a chosen Photographic Style, exposure adjustment and 48 MP setting, while a family snapshot session can return to 12 MP with Live Photos enabled.

6. Recommended setups by priority

Your priority Privacy setup Battery setup Photo setup
Everyday balance While Using for necessary location access; selected photos; App Privacy Report on. Adaptive Power on; Charge Limit around 90–95% if it covers your day. 12 MP for routine shots; preserve Photographic Style and Live Photo.
Long travel or event day Remove unused permissions before leaving. Adaptive Power on; Low Power Mode when reserve matters; raise the charge limit temporarily if needed. 12 MP and Live Photo for sharing; carry high-resolution capture only for planned subjects.
Editing and large prints Keep only the permissions required by the camera and editing apps. Use a limit that still covers the session; avoid charging in heat. ProRAW or 48 MP; preserve ProRAW & Resolution Control and confirm storage before shooting.
Battery longevity first Least-privilege permissions and periodic App Privacy Report checks. Charge Limit in the 80–85% range when practical; keep the phone below 35°C/95°F. 12 MP or HEIF 48 MP depending on detail needs; avoid accidental ProRAW files.

7. Troubleshoot the common surprises

“My photos suddenly became huge”

Check the camera format and the ProRAW & Resolution Control state. ProRAW and 48 MP modes create larger files than 12 MP. Turn the mode off for routine photography, then review Preserve Settings so the choice does not remain active unintentionally.

“I cannot take a Live Photo”

Confirm that ProRAW and HEIF Max are off. Live Photos are not available with either setting. Switch to a compatible photo mode, then re-enable Live Photo in the camera interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The phone feels slower in Low Power Mode”

That is an expected trade-off. Low Power Mode reduces background work, visual effects and other activity, and ProMotion may be limited to 60 fps. Turn it off after charging to 80% or higher if you need normal display behavior.

“Battery life is poor despite Adaptive Power”

Open Settings > Battery and identify the app responsible for foreground or background use. Review that app’s notifications, location, photo, microphone and background permissions rather than disabling unrelated system features.

“Charging stops before 100%”

Check Settings > Battery > Charging. A Charge Limit below 100% intentionally stops at the selected level. At a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging can pause around 80% and finish near the expected unplug time.
