Essential Android settings to change on a new phone for better privacy and battery life

On a new Android phone, start with the settings that control access to your camera, microphone, location and personal data, then tune background activity and the screen. The highest-value changes are reviewing the Privacy dashboard, granting each app the least location access it needs, deciding whether to send Usage & diagnostics data, confirming security protections and updates, and keeping Adaptive Battery enabled. Shorter screen timeout, lower brightness and careful limits on battery-heavy apps can extend runtime without breaking essential features.

Menu names vary between Android releases and manufacturer software. The paths below are the common Google paths; if a label is missing, search the Settings app for privacy dashboard, location, usage & diagnostics, adaptive battery or battery optimization.

Start by identifying your Android version and skin

Before changing anything, open Settings and note whether the phone runs Android 12, Android 13 or a later release. Android 13 and newer commonly combine controls under Settings > Security and privacy; older releases may show separate Security and Privacy pages. A manufacturer can rename or move the same controls, so searching Settings is often faster than following a path that was designed for a different phone.

Use the phone for a day or two before making aggressive restrictions. That gives Battery usage enough time to reveal which apps actually run in the background. Privacy changes can be made immediately, but battery restrictions should be based on observed behavior rather than assumptions.

Audit app access in Privacy dashboard

Open Settings > Privacy, or on some devices Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy dashboard. Google describes the dashboard this way: “From the privacy dashboard, you can see which apps are accessing data, which permissions apps are using, and when that access is happening.”

The history window depends on Android version. Android 12 can show the previous 24 hours, while Android 13 can show the previous seven days. That difference matters: a seven-day view is more likely to expose an app that checks location or the microphone only occasionally.

Open each category and inspect camera, microphone, location, contacts, calendar and photos. If an app has access that is unrelated to its purpose, remove it. A photo editor may need selected photos but not continuous location; a calculator should not need contacts; a social app that never records video should not retain camera access. Revisit the dashboard after installing a batch of apps, because permissions granted during setup are easy to forget.

  • Look for access at unusual times, such as microphone use while you were not recording.
  • Use the app’s permission page to change access rather than deleting the app immediately; you can test whether a feature still works.
  • When an app stops working after a change, restore only the specific permission it requires instead of returning every permission.

Choose the least location access that still works

For an individual app, open Settings > Location > App location permissions (the wording can differ) and choose one of four access levels. Android 12 and later also provide a Use precise location switch.

Permission choice What the app can do When it fits Trade-off
Allow all the time Use location in the background as well as when open. Apps whose core function genuinely depends on ongoing background location. More tracking and more potential battery use.
Allow only while using the app Access location while you are actively using the app. Navigation, ride-hailing and maps during an active trip. Background features may stop when the app is closed.
Ask every time Prompt for permission whenever the app requests location. Infrequent tasks where you want a decision at each use. Prompts interrupt the workflow.
Don’t allow Blocks the app’s location access. Apps that have no location-related function. Location-based features will not work.

Turn Use precise location off when an approximate area is sufficient. Weather information usually works with an approximate or one-time location, while turn-by-turn navigation and many ride-hailing pickups need precise location while in use. Approximate location reduces the detail an app receives without disabling location entirely.

When to turn off device-wide location

You can disable Settings > Location when you do not need location services. This is a broad switch, so Maps, location-based features, Find Hub or other device-finding tools, location sharing and earthquake alerts may stop working. Emergency location services or a mobile carrier can still transmit location to emergency responders during an emergency call or text. Treat the device-wide switch as a temporary privacy measure, not as a replacement for app-by-app permissions.

Decide about Usage & diagnostics

Go to Settings > Google > All services (or More) > Usage & diagnostics. This control determines whether Android sends Google information about device use and performance. Turn it off if you do not want that reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google states: “If you turn off usage and diagnostics, your device can still get essential services, like a new version of Android.” Disabling the switch therefore does not block normal Android updates or essential services. It also does not stop individual apps from collecting information under their own privacy policies; those practices must be managed through each app’s permissions and account settings.

Confirm the phone’s core security protections

On Android 13 and newer, open Settings > Security and privacy. On older versions, check the separate Security and Privacy pages. This screen is a status center for alerts, Play Protect, device lock, account security, system updates, device finders and privacy controls.

  • Screen lock: Set a strong PIN or password. A biometric unlock can make a strong code practical, but keep the PIN or password memorized because Android periodically requires it after a restart or for sensitive changes.
  • Google Play Protect: Leave scanning enabled. It checks installed apps for harmful behavior and is one of the phone’s basic defenses against malicious software.
  • Account security: Resolve warnings shown for your Google account, especially prompts about recovery methods or suspicious activity.
  • Device finder: Keep the finding feature available if you want to locate, lock or erase a lost phone. Turning off Location can reduce what these tools can do.
  • Security status: Note any overdue system update or warning before you install more apps.

Install Android and app updates before tuning battery behavior

Use Settings > System > Software update, or the manufacturer’s equivalent, and install any available system update. Then open Google Play Store > profile picture > Manage apps & device and install app updates. Menu names differ by manufacturer.

Updates can change permission behavior and close security defects. They can also fix battery problems, so troubleshooting an unusually fast drain on an unupdated phone can lead to the wrong conclusion. After an update, allow the phone some time to finish indexing and optimizing before judging a single day’s battery performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep Adaptive Battery and per-app optimization enabled

If the phone offers it, open Settings > Battery > Adaptive Battery and turn it on. Keep per-app battery optimization enabled unless a specific app genuinely needs an exception. Google’s Pixel guidance is direct: “For best results keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on.”

Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and delays background work for less important ones. That behavior saves power, but an infrequently used app may deliver a notification later than an unrestricted app. If a time-sensitive notification is delayed, identify that app and change only its battery setting; do not disable optimization globally.

When an optimization exception is justified

Consider an exception only after confirming a real feature failure, such as missed messages from a critical service or a background task that must run continuously. Document the change so you can reverse it later. Exceptions increase background activity and can reduce the benefit of Adaptive Battery, so they should be narrow and rare.

Reduce display and input drain without making the phone frustrating

Display settings are often among the most visible sources of battery use. In Settings > Display, set a shorter Screen timeout so the screen does not remain lit after you put the phone down. Use a lower manual brightness or enable Adaptive brightness if automatic adjustments suit your environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try Dark theme if you prefer it. Its battery effect depends on the display technology and how much of the interface is dark, so treat it as a practical preference with possible savings rather than a guaranteed battery-life percentage.

In sound and keyboard settings, turn off keyboard sounds and haptic vibration if they add no value to you. Keep vibration for calls or alerts if you rely on it; removing every haptic signal can make the phone harder to notice. The goal is to eliminate output you do not use, not to make essential feedback disappear.

Use Battery usage to find the apps that actually drain power

Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and inspect the apps at the top of the list. The ranking is more useful than general advice because it reflects your phone, network conditions and habits. An app that is high on the list may be legitimate during a busy day, so look for repeated background use rather than reacting to one short spike.

Restrict background activity selectively

For an app that consumes substantial power without needing continuous sync, open its battery settings and choose a restricted or optimized background mode. Test the app afterward. Background restriction can delay synchronization, uploads, widgets and notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not aggressively restrict messaging apps, alarms, navigation, accessibility services or work-profile apps. Messaging restrictions can delay incoming alerts; alarm restrictions can interfere with scheduled alarms; navigation needs active location and processing; accessibility tools may need persistent background access; and work-profile software may be required by an employer.

Remove software and accounts you no longer use

Uninstall unused apps instead of leaving them to update and run background jobs. Remove unused accounts from the phone as well. Fewer accounts and apps reduce synchronization work and shrink the number of services that can request permissions. Keep an app if you need its data, but first check whether its sync frequency or background permission can be reduced.

Balance privacy, battery and convenience deliberately

Decision More convenience More privacy or battery control What you may lose
Location access Allow all the time and precise location. While using, Ask every time, Don’t allow, or approximate location. Automatic location features, background geofencing or exact navigation.
Device-wide Location Leave it on for Maps, finding tools, sharing and alerts. Turn it off when location is unnecessary. Those location-dependent functions may stop; emergency behavior is handled separately.
Battery activity Unrestricted background work. Adaptive Battery, optimization and selective restriction. Some notifications or sync jobs may arrive later.
Display and input Long timeout, high brightness, sounds and haptics. Short timeout, lower or adaptive brightness, Dark theme and fewer effects. Less immediate visibility or tactile feedback.
Usage & diagnostics Share device-use and performance information with Google. Turn the switch off. Android essential services and updates remain available, but app-level data collection is unaffected.

A practical first-day order

  1. Install pending system and Play Store updates.
  2. Open the Security and privacy area, set the screen lock and verify Play Protect, account security and device-finding status.
  3. Review the Privacy dashboard, starting with camera, microphone and location, then contacts, calendar and photos.
  4. Set each app’s location level and disable precise location where approximate location works.
  5. Choose whether Usage & diagnostics matches your sharing preference.
  6. Enable Adaptive Battery and leave normal battery optimization on.
  7. Shorten Screen timeout, adjust brightness and remove input effects you do not use.
  8. After a normal day of use, inspect Battery usage and restrict only apps whose background work is unnecessary.

What to do when a change causes a problem

  • Notifications arrive late: Check the app’s battery setting first. Remove a restriction or optimization exception only for that app, then test again.
  • Navigation is inaccurate: Re-enable precise location and allow location while using the navigation app. A device-wide Location switch that is off must also be restored.
  • Weather or local recommendations disappear: Grant approximate or while-using location if that is enough for the feature; do not default to all-the-time precise access.
  • An alarm fails: Remove battery restriction for the alarm app and verify that its notifications are allowed.
  • A work or accessibility feature stops: Restore the required background permission and consult the administrator or service documentation before changing other controls.
  • A menu is missing: Search Settings using the feature name. Android release and manufacturer software can change both the label and its location.

How much improvement should you expect?

Official guidance for these controls is behavioral rather than a promise of a fixed battery percentage or privacy-risk reduction. Results depend on the phone’s Android version, display, mobile signal, installed apps and usage pattern. The reliable expectation is more control: fewer unnecessary permission grants, less background access, and settings that make heavy use visible so you can correct it without disabling essential services.
