Manufacturer guidance identifies several common categories, but the right choices depend on the printer and the maintenance task.

- Cleaning supplies: isopropyl alcohol (IPA), paper towels, compressed air, and a brass brush may be useful for particular cleaning jobs.
- Hotend tools: a brass nozzle brush or cleaning needles may suit a specific nozzle-cleaning procedure; follow the instructions for your model.
- Lubricants and replacement parts: use products and parts approved for the exact component and printer model rather than assuming one lubricant or kit fits all machines.
Prusa’s maintenance guides for the MK3.5/S, XL, and MK4/S and MK3.9/S illustrate why maintenance supplies should be checked against the specific printer’s instructions. Those recommendations are not universal specifications for all brands and models.
How do you choose a maintenance kit?
- Confirm compatibility. Check the kit’s stated printer models and whether its parts fit the component you plan to service.
- Match contents to the task. Look for the tools and consumables needed for your maintenance work, not merely a long list of items.
- Check replacement-part fit and availability. A model-specific kit may include parts that are not appropriate for other printers.
- Read the instructions and cautions. Confirm that the product explains safe use, particularly for hot components, electronics, and lubricated motion systems.
- Verify the price claim. Compare the live price with the retailer’s stated reference price and confirm that both apply to the same product and region.
Prusa’s Prusa Pro HT90 Maintenance Kit is an example of a physical, model-specific kit—not a general recommendation for every 3D printer.

How should you clean nozzle and heaterblock residue?
For the Prusa MK4/S and MK3.9/S, the manufacturer’s guide recommends heating the nozzle for three to five minutes at 250 °C to soften filament residue, then using a small brass brush. This is model-specific guidance, not an all-printer procedure. The guide warns: “CAUTION: Heated parts can cause severe burns!” Follow the directions for your own printer and take care around hot components. See the Prusa maintenance instructions.

Why should lubricant be specific to the component?
Lubricants are not interchangeable across every printer part. Prusa’s XL guide calls for a dedicated linear-rail lubrication set every three to six months and warns against applying general Prusa Lubricant or other products outside that set to those rails. That interval and product restriction apply to the XL guidance; consult your own printer’s instructions for other models. See the Prusa XL maintenance guide.

How often should you inspect a printer?
Follow the interval specified for your model. Prusa recommends inspection every couple hundred print hours for the MK3.5/S, while its XL guide gives an approximate interval of 200–300 print hours. These are manufacturer recommendations for those models, not a universal maintenance schedule. MK3.5/S guidance and XL guidance.
