Essencelord is a loot-driven action-adventure RPG for Game Boy Color by developer Tyler Lombard. It is in development, but a demo is available to play in a browser or download as Game Boy Color ROM files. Those demo files are not the full game.
What is Essencelord?
Lombard describes the project as “A loot-driven action adventure where gear and skills define your playstyle.” The developer’s Essencelord project page says players defeat enemies and bosses to earn Essence, which can be used to level up and create gear.

Equipment is designed to be a consequential choice rather than a collection stored in an inventory: the developer describes the system as “Semi-permanent gear where there is no inventory and every gearing decision means replacing what you currently have!” Players can also customize skills through a Skill Modifier system. These are the creator’s descriptions of the design, not findings from an independent review.

Can you play it now?
Yes, you can try the demo on the developer’s project page, which also lists downloadable .gbc and .pocket files. The page identifies Essencelord as in development; the availability of a demo does not mean the full game has been released.

- New and high quality.
- Compatible for both US/EU/JAP versions console.
- RPG games can be saved by the battery inside, but Action games have no saving function.

- GBC games can't play on the GB game console
Lombard’s February 19, 2026 development log described an early build as “My first release in years and its a very early version of my current project: a Diablo-like ARPG for the Gameboy Color!” That is a dated description of an early version, not confirmation of the finished game’s final scope.
What has been reported about the Kickstarter?
Time Extension reported on October 6, 2026 that Essencelord was crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The report put Tyler Lombard’s campaign goal at $4,500 and mentioned physical editions, custom-color cartridges, and strategy guides among possible rewards. Reward tiers and campaign terms have not been independently confirmed here, so check the live campaign for availability, price, shipping regions, and delivery estimates before relying on those details. The amount raised in the October 6 report is a snapshot and should not be treated as the current total.

What hardware is it for?
Essencelord is being developed for Game Boy Color. A Game Boy Color handheld is therefore the relevant hardware category for a physical Game Boy Color release, but the developer’s page currently establishes demo files—not a released physical copy. The project’s availability as a cartridge, and which devices might support any eventual release, depend on confirmed campaign and product details.
