Neither an esports business master’s nor a traditional MBA is inherently a waste. The better choice depends on the exact credential, curriculum, net cost, practical access to the industry and independently documented outcomes—measured against the work you want to do. Available program descriptions show that some esports options are MBAs with specialist electives, not substitutes for all general business training. The available evidence does not establish that either degree type produces better employment, salaries or return on investment.
What “esports business master’s” can mean
The label can describe different credentials. Some programs are MBAs with an esports focus; others are specialist master’s degrees or shorter certificates. Read the degree name and required courses rather than assuming that “esports” means a narrow curriculum or that “MBA” guarantees a broad one.

An MBA with an esports focus
Shenandoah University describes its offering as an online, 33-credit MBA with an esports management focus. Its MBA core includes topics such as data-driven decisions, leadership, operations and international business, alongside three listed esports courses: consumerism, entrepreneurship and digital media management. The school describes the focus as adding specialist knowledge and experience to the MBA foundation. See Shenandoah’s program details.
A second online MBA example
IU International University of Applied Sciences describes a 90-ECTS online MBA combining business foundation courses with esports management, esports marketing and event management modules, plus a capstone project. Its listed general business subjects include leadership, corporate finance, international marketing and strategic management. See IU’s program details.

Related credentials, not MBA equivalents
Some adjacent options serve more specific aims. The University of Alabama at Birmingham describes an MS in higher-education intercollegiate athletics administration with a track in esports organization and management. See UAB’s degree information. Northwestern describes a four-course graduate esports certificate; it says completed courses may count toward its sports administration master’s if a student applies before completing the certificate. See Northwestern’s certificate information. Neither is simply another name for an MBA.
What published prices do—and do not—tell you
Provider-published prices illustrate why a headline figure is not an investment comparison. Shenandoah lists tuition of $795 per credit for its 33-credit program. IU lists fees starting at €382 per month, depending on the study model. Those figures use different pricing structures, and neither alone establishes a complete, directly comparable cost against a traditional MBA.
Rank #2
Before comparing programs, request a current estimate for your specific study plan. Include tuition, fees, aid, required travel or residency, and the likely cost of time away from paid work. Confirm the applicable study duration and whether the quoted amount recurs or depends on a particular model. Program prices and terms can change.

What the evidence says about careers and return
Shenandoah lists possible directions such as esports administration, event management, marketing and strategy, and describes project and event experience. Those are program descriptions, not guarantees of a job, salary or placement. The reviewed program information does not provide independently comparable employment outcomes for its graduates.
Rank #3
More broadly, the available evidence does not establish comparable graduate employment rates, salaries or return on investment for esports-focused and traditional MBA graduates. It therefore cannot support a claim that one reliably pays better or that an esports degree guarantees entry to professional esports. Ask schools for cohort-level completion, employment and salary figures, including the dates, definitions and methodology behind them. Treat figures without that context cautiously.
How to compare the actual programs
Use the same questions for each option, including any traditional MBA you are considering. A degree title alone does not answer them.
Rank #4
- Identify the job and geography. Review current job postings and employer requirements for the role you want, in the location where you plan to work. This tests whether specialist esports study is relevant to your target rather than assuming that it is.
- Inspect the required business core. Compare actual courses in accounting, finance, analytics, operations, marketing, strategy and leadership. An esports label does not by itself show how much general business study a program contains.
- Check specialist depth against your goals. Look for relevant study in areas such as esports economics and revenue, event operations, sponsorship, media, entrepreneurship, governance or law. Which topics matter depends on the work you intend to pursue.
- Verify applied opportunities. Ask what projects, internships, event work and access to teams or organizations involve in practice. Confirm eligibility, availability and the work students actually do; advertised opportunities are not guaranteed placements.
- Confirm the credential and recognition. Verify the exact degree name, institutional recognition and accreditation that apply to the specific school, program and location. Do not infer recognition from a broad label or from another program at the same institution.
- Request outcome data with definitions. Ask for completion, employment and salary results for a clearly defined cohort, along with dates and methodology. If a school cannot provide comparable evidence, do not treat its career descriptions as proof of graduate outcomes.
- Calculate your net cost and time. Use the current estimate for your own plan, including fees, aid, travel or residency and time away from paid work. Compare like with like rather than a per-credit rate with a monthly starting price.
When each option may make sense
An esports-focused MBA may be worth considering if your target roles call for both broad business skills and specialist knowledge, and the program’s required courses, applied opportunities and net cost make sense for you. A broad MBA may be a better fit if its curriculum and verified recognition align more closely with the roles you want or if you value flexibility across industries. These are decision hypotheses, not proven hiring rules: test them against course lists, job requirements and credible outcome data.
A related athletics-administration degree or esports certificate may be more appropriate if your goal is specifically college athletics administration or a shorter specialist credential. Compare what it qualifies you to study and do; do not treat it as interchangeable with an MBA.
Best Value
Either path can be a poor investment for a particular person when its cost, time commitment, curriculum or career access does not match that person’s goals. The available information supports a careful program-by-program decision, not a universal verdict that an esports business master’s—or a traditional MBA—is a waste.
