ESPN’s animated sports alt-casts turn live player-tracking inputs into game action staged inside a franchise world. The broadcast also depends on creative teams, animation partners, commentators and live-production decisions—not just a data feed or a layer of graphics. The exact tracking sources and workflow vary by event, and public accounts do not disclose a complete technical system diagram.
How an animated alt-cast turns a live game into animation
The simplest way to picture the production is as a live game translated into an animated presentation: tracking data supplies movement inputs, visualization technology renders the action, and creative and broadcast teams shape what viewers see. ESPN and Disney have described this approach for particular events, not as one standard system that every animated alt-cast uses.

Tracking data supplies movement inputs
For the 2023 NFL presentation Toy Story Funday Football, ESPN and Disney said the production used NFL Next Gen Stats player-tracking data and Beyond Sports technology. Those details apply to that event; they do not establish the data source or software used for every sport or presentation. Disney’s behind-the-scenes account and ESPN’s production feature describe the collaboration.
The NHL examples show how the inputs can differ. ESPN described the 2023 Big City Greens Classic as a live animated telecast with real-time volumetric animation. Its 2024 feature on Big City Greens Classic 2 describes greater use of optical tracking data. For the 2026 Inside Out Classic, Disney and the NHL identified NHL EDGE positional data, Hawk-Eye optical tracking and Beyond Sports visualization technology. These event-specific accounts do not establish that each source contributes the same kind of data or plays the same role in every production. ESPN’s Big City Greens Classic 2 feature, Disney’s Inside Out Classic announcement and the NHL announcement explain those examples.

Creative direction makes the animation belong to its world
Turning tracked movement into a broadcast set in Andy’s room or a hockey game styled for Big City Greens takes more than mapping players onto a screen. ESPN’s Creative Studio staff, animation partners and franchise collaborators develop characters, environments and storytelling choices for the event. David “Sparky” Sparrgrove, a senior director of creative animation for ESPN’s Creative Studio team, described Toy Story Funday Football as a family-oriented “fun-cast” from the outset. ESPN’s feature on the Toy Story production discusses that creative collaboration.
Character fidelity also creates practical production challenges. In Disney’s behind-the-scenes interview, ESPN Creative Studio senior director Michael “Spike” Szykowny said the team carried lessons from Big City Greens into Toy Story Funday Football. He pointed to the need to place a hockey stick carefully so it would not intersect with or obscure other characters. It is a small example of how an artistic choice can affect a legible live scene. Disney’s interview with Szykowny describes that lesson.

How commentators appear in the animated broadcast
The animated world can include the people presenting the game, not only the players. ESPN’s account of the Big City Greens Classic describes using motion capture to create animated versions of commentators. Disney’s announcement for the Inside Out Classic says commentators wore virtual-reality headsets for motion capture in the animated environment. In practical terms, captured talent movement is represented by animated commentators in the virtual presentation.

What the production can do when live tracking or animation has a problem
An animated alt-cast is still a live broadcast, so the production needs ways to keep the show moving if a technical or tracking issue affects the animated view. In a Disney+ interview about Monsters Funday Football, an animation-team speaker said the crew may cut to another camera view or use a pre-animated segment. That account describes contingencies for that event; it does not establish a universal fallback procedure or disclose exact latency, frame rate, tracking accuracy or staffing levels. Disney+’s interview about Monsters Funday Football describes the options.

In 2025, ESPN announced an expanded agreement with Beyond Sports and Hawk-Eye under which it planned animated telecasts for NFL, NHL, NBA and WNBA games during the 2025–26 season. The announcement also referenced existing NFL presentations and the NBA’s Dunk the Halls. It establishes plans for that season, not a schedule beyond it. ESPN’s announcement gives the scope.

Where to watch an animated ESPN presentation
Availability is tied to the specific event, not to a blanket rule for all animated alt-casts. ESPN’s 2023 Toy Story Funday Football announcement listed ESPN+ and Disney+ for that presentation at the time. For a different or upcoming event, check its official listing: the platform named for one broadcast does not establish where another can be viewed. Disney’s Toy Story production feature provides the event context.
