eSlams: How an AI Test That Fights Back Measures Adaptation

AI systems need tests in which their decisions change what happens next. eSlams provides that missing layer by putting models in interactive games against people or other models. An opponent responds, the game state changes, and the model must keep making legal, consequential decisions rather than producing one polished answer.

That makes eSlams useful evidence about adaptation, consistency and recovery. It is not a shortcut to proving general intelligence or safety in a high-stakes deployment. The value is in examining the entire sequence from the opening move to the final result.

What eSlams tests that a static benchmark cannot

A conventional question-and-answer benchmark usually has a simple endpoint: the model receives a prompt, returns an answer and receives a score. That format can measure knowledge, reasoning on a fixed problem and instruction following, but it does not show what happens after the model’s answer changes the situation.

eSlams turns the answer into an action inside an environment. The action produces a new state, an opponent reacts, and the model faces a different decision. A strong performance therefore requires more than one impressive response. The model has to preserve relevant information, recognize changed circumstances, select a legal move and revise its plan when its earlier assumptions stop working.

Ramakrishnan Lokanathan, eSlams’ founder, describes the point this way: “The question is not simply whether an AI can win. It is what happened between the first move and the final score.”

Examples of the pressure created by an opponent

  • Connect Four: the model must notice an opponent’s immediate threat and respond before a previously attractive plan becomes losing.
  • Poker: hidden information and changing probabilities test whether the model can make decisions without seeing the complete state.
  • Cooperative games: the model must coordinate with another participant instead of optimizing a move in isolation.
  • Negotiation: a counterpart can reject, counter or reinterpret a proposal, forcing the model to update its strategy.
  • Control tasks: actions alter a system over time, so an early mistake can create harder later states.

The intended questions are behavioral: Does the model make consistently good decisions? Does it adapt when the opponent or state changes? Can it recover after a bad plan? Those questions are difficult to answer with isolated prompts.

How the eSlams system is organized

eSlams has two public-facing layers built on the eSlams Core engine.

Arena: a person plays the model

Arena lets a visitor choose a game and face an AI model directly. This is useful for experiencing the model’s behavior, seeing whether its decisions make sense in context and spotting obvious failures that a single aggregate score can hide. A human opponent can also introduce varied, less predictable responses rather than repeating one fixed test script.

Battlefield: models play models

Battlefield displays recorded matches between AI models. Model-versus-model play makes controlled comparisons possible when the same environment, rules and information limits are used for every participant. Recorded matches can be inspected after the fact instead of relying only on a leaderboard number.

Core: rules, visibility and records

eSlams Core enforces the rules of each environment and the visibility limits that define what a participant is allowed to know. It records actions and technical failures separately, which is essential when a poor result could come from the model’s decision or from the software running it.

Each match can be saved as a portable record for validation and replay. Public replay data is separated from private audit information, allowing observers to examine the observable game while retaining internal details for verification. This separation also gives evaluators a way to investigate disputed results without exposing every private implementation detail.

Fallback substitutions are not counted as valid play

If a model fails to produce a usable action and the software substitutes a move, that intervention is recorded. The affected run is excluded from valid scoring rather than being quietly treated as if the model had selected the replacement itself. This prevents an infrastructure rescue from inflating a model’s apparent playing ability.

What is inside eSlams Core

The eSlams Core release for 2026 supports 50 game and control environments. The collection spans several kinds of strategic pressure instead of measuring one narrow skill.

Environment family What it can reveal Illustrative challenge
Board games Planning, threat detection and legal move selection Responding to an opponent’s tactical change in Connect Four
Card games Reasoning with hidden information and uncertainty Updating decisions when the visible evidence changes in poker
Negotiation Adaptation to another party’s preferences and counteroffers Changing a proposal after rejection
Cooperation Coordination, communication and shared objectives Helping a partner rather than pursuing an isolated score
Control tasks Feedback handling and stability over a sequence of actions Correcting a trajectory after an earlier error

The number of environments matters because one game can reward a very specific strategy. A model that performs well in a board game may still fail at hidden information, coordination or continuous control. A portfolio of 50 environments gives evaluators more opportunities to distinguish a transferable behavior from a game-specific trick.

How to run a meaningful eSlams evaluation

A credible result depends on the test design as much as on the model. Use the following process when comparing systems or studying one model’s behavior.

  1. Choose environments that match the question. Select board, card, negotiation, cooperation or control tasks according to the capability you want to examine. Do not treat a single game as a general intelligence test.
  2. Set identical rules and information boundaries. Every model should receive the same legal action space, visibility limits, time allowances and scoring rules. Record any difference that cannot be standardized.
  3. Run repeated trials. One match can be decided by an unusual opening, a lucky draw or an opponent’s mistake. Repetition shows whether the behavior is stable.
  4. Balance the conditions. Change starting positions, seats, opponents or other relevant conditions so that a hidden advantage is not assigned consistently to one model.
  5. Separate model errors from technical failures. Count illegal actions, timeouts, crashes and other execution problems independently from strategically poor choices. A fallback substitution must remain marked and its run excluded from valid scoring.
  6. Save and replay the matches. Use the portable match record to verify the sequence, inspect turning points and allow another evaluator to reproduce the result.
  7. Report uncertainty. Publish the number of trials, the conditions, the valid-run count and the range of outcomes. A single average without its spread can make an unstable model look reliable.

What to measure beyond wins and losses

A final score is an outcome, not an explanation. The following measures provide a more useful profile.

Consistency across repeated trials

Compare the model’s results over multiple matches rather than highlighting its best game. A model that alternates between brilliant and disastrous play has a different operational risk from one that produces moderate but dependable decisions.

Adaptation to a changing state

Inspect moves immediately after an opponent changes the position, rejects a proposal or reveals new information. The important signal is whether the model updates its plan instead of repeating a response that was only appropriate in the previous state.

Recovery after a bad plan

Mark the point at which an early assumption becomes untenable. Then examine whether later actions limit the damage, seek a new route or continue following the failed plan. Recovery is a sequence property that a one-shot benchmark cannot expose.

Rule-following and legal-action rate

Track how often the model selects an action permitted by the environment. Legal-action performance is distinct from strategic strength: a model can follow rules reliably while playing poorly, or make strong strategic suggestions that cannot be executed legally.

Technical reliability versus model error

Report crashes, timeouts, malformed outputs and fallback substitutions separately. Mixing these events into a win rate obscures whether the system needs a better model, a better adapter or more robust runtime controls.

Replay and audit quality

A result is more trustworthy when another evaluator can load the match, follow the action sequence and check the state transitions. Portable records and the split between public replay information and private audit data support that process.

Uncertainty under balanced conditions

Use repeated, balanced trials and state how much the result could vary. The source guidance for eSlams specifically calls for a clear account of uncertainty, not just a ranking.

Can a game reveal AI failure better than a benchmark?

It can reveal some failures more directly, especially failures that appear only after interaction. A model may answer a tactical question correctly and still miss the same threat when an opponent creates it several turns later. A negotiation model may write a persuasive opening message but fail to adjust after a counteroffer. A cooperative agent may optimize its own immediate reward while damaging the team’s objective.

Interactive games also make the failure sequence visible. Evaluators can identify the first wrong assumption, the opponent’s response, the model’s attempted correction and the eventual consequence. That causal chain is often more actionable than a benchmark item labeled simply “incorrect.”

However, game behavior is evidence about the tested environments, not a universal measure of intelligence. The rules, opponents, information structure and scoring objective all shape what is being measured. A model can learn a narrow strategy for a familiar environment without acquiring the broader judgment needed elsewhere.

Why winning does not prove deployment readiness

Games are not a complete test of intelligence, and winning one does not prove readiness for a high-stakes application. Real deployments involve domain-specific facts, real users, privacy constraints, security threats, legal duties, ambiguous goals and consequences that may not be represented in a game.

An eSlams result should therefore sit alongside evaluations conducted in the actual setting where the AI will operate. For a medical assistant, that could mean clinical safety and escalation tests; for a financial system, policy compliance and loss controls; for an industrial controller, hardware-in-the-loop reliability and fail-safe behavior. The game result can add evidence about adaptation and recovery, but it cannot substitute for those domain tests.

Access, licensing and the first planned event

eSlams Core is MIT-licensed and available through GitHub and PyPI, allowing developers and evaluators to inspect, run and extend the engine under that license. Teams should still check the current project documentation for installation requirements, supported model interfaces and the precise release they intend to evaluate.

The inaugural AI Grand Slams are planned for February 8–14, 2027. A planned event date is not the same as a completed competition, so any schedule, participating models or final rules should be confirmed through the project before being treated as settled.

How to interpret an eSlams result

Read the result as a behavioral profile. Ask which environments were used, how many valid trials were completed, whether conditions were balanced, how technical failures were handled, what the replay shows and how large the uncertainty is. A model that wins narrowly but needs frequent fallback substitutions tells a different story from one that wins less often while completing every action legally and recovering consistently.

The strongest conclusion is specific: under the stated rules and repeated conditions, this model displayed a measured level of adaptation, reliability or coordination in these environments. That is more informative than a bare leaderboard position and more honest than treating a game victory as proof that the model is ready for every real-world task.
