This is not a minor variation on ordinary co-op. Before purchase, compare the live store pages for both players. Check the exact game title, generation of console, downloadable-content requirements, online-service requirement, and whether the listing explicitly names your friend’s platform. This is especially important when one person is on a newer console and the other is using an older generation or a PC storefront.

We Were Here: communication as the social activity
The frozen-wasteland and castle premise creates a more focused setup: two people, two perspectives, and a need to exchange information. The strongest reason to choose it is the conversation itself. Players who enjoy precise descriptions, listening, and collaborative problem-solving get an experience built around those behaviors.
That same focus can be a poor match for a group that wants to relax silently, rotate several players through a session, or continue alone when a partner leaves. The original game’s design expects a committed two-person conversation.

Buying We Were Here for solo play

Which game should you play first?
Start with Escape Academy when your priority is choice: you might play alone, you want local split-screen, or your online partner is not always available. Its confirmed modes make it the lower-risk recommendation for a mixed group.
Start with We Were Here when both players are present and the point of the evening is to communicate under pressure. The Librarian-and-Explorer structure gives each person a distinct responsibility, and the official description makes clear that speaking and listening are central mechanics.
