CGI and OVHcloud have announced a multi-million-euro, 30-month contract to help build Digital EO, the European Space Agency’s Earth Observation Information System. The companies say more than 500 petabytes (PB) of Earth-observation data are expected by 2035; that is a forecast in their announcement, not a measurement of data already stored.

What is ESA’s Digital EO system?

Digital EO is a planned European digital infrastructure intended to bring Earth-observation data, services and processing capabilities together. Rather than describing a single storage device or a finished data centre, the companies frame it as a federated environment: infrastructure and capabilities that can work across national and European systems.

The stated aim is to let users access data and use algorithms, applications and services in one scalable, resilient environment. These are project objectives, not reported performance results. The companies’ announcement does not provide a detailed technical architecture, storage specifications or measured capacity.

Why does the 500 PB forecast matter?

CGI and OVHcloud said in their 29 September 2026 announcement that more than 500 PB of Earth-observation data are expected by 2035. The figure describes anticipated future data volume. It should not be read as the amount Digital EO currently holds, or as an independently validated measurement published by ESA.

Sun Earth Moon Orbital Model with Light, Kids Solar System Model Astronomical Science Educational Kits
  • The model is an excellent way to illustrate Earth's rotation, the planet's revolution around the sun, the seasons of the year, and the orbit of our moon - all in one!
  • This device can serve to illustrate to a young child that Earth spins on its axis, that the moon orbits Earth every 28 days, and the Earth orbits the sun once a year,Can help child's astronomy class better understand moon phases, eclipses, season, etc.
  • You can learn about the 24 Solar Terms used by farmers in China,It's pretty easy, it comes in English.
  • There is a raised button on the sun model, Remove the wire and push the button, the sun will give out light.
  • Note: This item will be interesting to kids who are starting to get excited about astronomy, but It is not suitable for rigorous astronomy scientific research!

That forecast helps explain the project’s emphasis on storage alongside compute and network capacity: a system designed to make large volumes of Earth-observation data usable also needs resources to process and move that data. The announcement does not specify how the forecast is calculated, what portion the new system will store, or the storage technology it will use.

What are CGI and OVHcloud responsible for?

Company Announced role
OVHcloud Cloud foundation, including compute, storage, network capacity and managed cloud services.
CGI, through CGI France Défense et Spatial Architecture and integration, plus organizational resources, services, user and developer support, and platform improvement.

The division is between supplying cloud resources and designing, integrating and supporting the broader platform. The announcement does not provide enough technical or performance data to compare the companies’ products or rank the suppliers.

Where will the initial deployment operate?

The announced initial deployment is planned for Italy, France and Germany, with support capabilities operated from Poland. The companies say Digital EO may later extend to other European countries and Canada; that is a possibility, not a confirmed rollout beyond the initial locations.

Who is Digital EO intended to serve?

The companies name scientists, public bodies, businesses and citizens as intended audiences. They also say the system is meant to support ESA and European Commission initiatives, including Copernicus and Destination Earth (DestinE). The announcement does not detail specific user services, access rules or launch dates for those audiences.

What has been announced—and what remains unknown?

The company announcement establishes the contract’s duration, the suppliers’ assigned roles, planned initial locations and the stated 2035 data forecast. It does not give the exact contract value, technical specifications, detailed implementation milestones beyond the 30-month term, or evidence that the planned system is already deployed.

Reuters also reported the contract and volume framing. Its report separately mentions ESA study contracts for security-focused architecture led by ICEYE and Leonardo; those are distinct from the CGI and OVHcloud Digital EO contract, not additional suppliers identified for this project.
