That is a strikingly negative mood—not evidence that a majority voted to erase every social platform. The same survey summary reports that many people use social media more than they did in 2010, showing a gap between how respondents assess it and how they say they use it.
What did the poll say about erasing social media?
The Register reported that an Opinium poll found around one-third of respondents thought life would get better if social media were erased from the internet tomorrow. The report also says just 7% considered social media a force for good. The Register’s account, published 1 October 2026, does not provide the exact wording of the disappearance question or its full answer distribution.

That distinction matters: around one-third saying life might improve is not the same as a majority explicitly choosing to delete all social media. Nor does the result establish that respondents were asked to vote on a real-world proposal. The headline’s “yes” captures a notable share agreeing with a hypothetical, not a mandate to switch off platforms.

- 42% called social networks addictive.
- Around half thought social media was worse for society than it had been in 2010. The report discusses false or misleading information and algorithmic curation in connection with this view; those are respondents’ perceptions, not proof that social media caused particular harms.
- More than half thought commercialization had contributed to social media’s decline.
These figures describe reported opinions. They do not by themselves show that social media causes addiction, misinformation, declining wellbeing or social division.
Why do negative views coexist with continued use?
The same Register summary says 49% used social media more than 16 years earlier, while 31% used it more to view content than to post. Together, the responses suggest that negative assessments have not simply translated into less reported use. They do not explain why people keep using it: the poll summary does not establish whether respondents stay for communication, entertainment, news, habit or another reason.

There is also a definitional wrinkle. “Social media” can mean large commercial networks, or it can be understood more broadly as online spaces where people communicate. A forum commenter raised this question in response to the coverage. The poll’s accessible summary does not define the term, so readers should be cautious about assuming every respondent had the same platforms or services in mind.
Is support for restricting under-16s the same as wanting all social media gone?
No. A separate Opinium survey asked about an Australian-style restriction on social media use by under-16s. It found support among 66% of UK adults and 72% of parents; support among 18–24-year-olds was 51%. These are responses to a targeted age-policy question, not a measure of support for erasing social media for everyone. Opinium’s April page describes the Australian measure as taking effect in December 2025 and applying to ten platforms, including Instagram and TikTok; that description should not be read as a statement of current UK law. Among opponents, the leading objections were excessive government control (49%) and difficulty enforcing the restriction (42%). The survey records these reported reasons; it does not settle the policy debate or establish the likely effects of a restriction. Opinium’s reported reasons for and against the restriction
Separately, The Register says seven in ten respondents supported fines for social media companies whose platforms expose under-16s to harmful content. That is a view about penalties for companies, not a blanket deletion proposal.

How much weight should readers put on the figures?
Opinium’s published page for its related May 2026 online-safety research says it surveyed nationally and politically representative online samples of 2,000 UK adults and 1,110 parents on 20–22 May 2026. The Register characterises its cited work as a thought-leadership exercise and says it was not commissioned by a commercial or government entity. Opinium’s May 2026 research page
The accessible summaries do not establish that every figure cited here came from the same respondent base or identical question wording. They also do not provide the disappearance question’s response options, subgroup bases, weighting details or uncertainty intervals. Treat the percentages as a snapshot of reported attitudes, not a referendum or a precise measure of what the entire UK population would choose in a binding vote.
