What Equivalent Skies is and which version to use
Equivalent Skies is an expert skyblock modpack built around ProjectE. Its design deliberately makes ProjectE part of progression rather than handing players immediate endgame power. The official CurseForge project identifies TheLimePixel as the owner and lists Minecraft 1.12.2 as the target version.
The latest release listed on the official files page is Equivalent Skies-1.3.3, uploaded February 25, 2019. That same files page lists a separate “Equivalent Skies – 1.3.3 Server File” under Minecraft 1.12 server packs. Use that matched 1.3.3 line for both the server and clients; do not combine a different pack release with the 1.3.3 server package.

The project page showed approximately 697,580 total downloads when retrieved in 2026. CurseForge’s counter is live and can change, so it is not a fixed measure of current activity or server performance.
Version checklist

Download the official server package
- Open the official Equivalent Skies project page on CurseForge.
- Open the Files section.
- Locate the Minecraft 1.12 server-pack entry for the release you intend to run. For the latest listed release, choose Equivalent Skies – 1.3.3 Server File.
- Download the server archive to the computer that will host the world.
The project owner’s instructions state that pack versions should have server files available from the Files page by selecting the server-files option beside the desired version. Treat the server archive as the authoritative starting point instead of assembling a Forge server manually and copying mod files one by one.

The documented package includes a pack-specific startup script named start_server.bat. The procedure below assumes a Windows host because a .bat file is a Windows batch script.
1. Create a dedicated server folder
Make a new folder used only for this Equivalent Skies instance. Keeping the archive and the extracted files together makes later backups, updates, and troubleshooting easier. Avoid extracting the files into your client installation or into a folder shared with another modpack.

2. Extract the downloaded archive
Extract the complete server package into the dedicated folder. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the archive. Do not rename files or move individual libraries, configuration folders, or scripts before the first launch; the supplied startup script is intended to run from the package’s own directory.
3. Launch the supplied script
- Open the extracted server folder.
- Find
start_server.bat. - Double-click it to start the server, or run it from a Command Prompt opened in that folder.
- Keep the console window available while the server is running so you can read startup messages and stop the process cleanly when needed.
The project documentation specifically names start_server.bat as the startup method. If the archive you downloaded does not contain that file, recheck that you selected the server file rather than the client download and that the archive extracted completely.
4. Complete first-run setup in the console
On a first launch, the server may create world and configuration files before it is ready for players. Follow any confirmation or license prompt displayed by the package, then restart with the same supplied script if the console instructs you to do so. The available project instructions do not publish a separate Equivalent Skies-specific hardware, memory, Java-runtime, firewall, or operating-system specification, so do not treat an unofficial number as an official minimum.
5. Keep the server directory intact
World data, configuration files, logs, and mod files belong to this installation. Back up the entire server folder, or at minimum the world and configuration data, before changing versions or making large progression changes. The project page does not specify a built-in backup command; use the backup facilities of your operating system or host panel if you need scheduled copies.

Install the matching client
Each player needs the Equivalent Skies client on the same Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge context as the server. The setup reference describes the pack as a matched client/server installation. A client running another Equivalent Skies release, another Minecraft version, or a different mod-loader context can fail to connect or produce mismatched gameplay.
- Install the Minecraft 1.12.2 profile used by Equivalent Skies.
- Install the matching Forge context for that profile.
- Install Equivalent Skies 1.3.3 through your launcher or pack manager.
- Launch the pack once locally so its files are created.
- Use the server address supplied by the host to connect.
Everyone joining the same world should use the same pack line. If you intentionally run another release, download that release’s corresponding server file instead of mixing it with 1.3.3.

Equivalent Skies uses island commands for cooperative play. The official instructions require a player who is already assigned to an island to leave it before joining another player’s island.
Player who wants to join
In chat, run:
/island leave
This removes the player from their current island according to the pack’s instructions. Make sure any important progress on that island is understood before leaving.

Island owner sends the invitation
The owner or current island member runs:
/island invite <player name>
Replace <player name> with the invitee’s in-game name. Keep the spelling and capitalization consistent with the name shown in the player list.
Invited player accepts
The invited player runs:
/island join
After acceptance, the player should appear on the inviter’s island and can work within that island’s progression. If the join command fails, confirm that the invite was sent after the player used /island leave and that both players are connected to the same server instance.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you the files and the machine-level control, while managed hosting moves installation and routine administration into a provider’s panel. The available provider pages advertise the following Equivalent Skies services, but their current prices, locations, uptime, affiliate status, and support for this older 1.12.2 pack were not established here and should be checked directly before purchase.

When self-hosting is the better choice
- You want direct access to every server file and configuration.
- You already have a machine that can remain available while friends play.
- You are willing to handle updates, backups, access control, and troubleshooting.
- You need to decide exactly when the world starts, stops, or is copied.
When managed hosting is the better choice
- You do not want to extract archives or maintain a Forge-based installation.
- You need a browser panel for console access, files, schedules, or backups.
- The host’s current plan explicitly supports the 1.12.2 server package.
- The recurring fee and resource limits are acceptable after checking the provider’s current terms.
Managed installation does not remove the need for version discipline. Confirm that the provider is installing the official Equivalent Skies server pack and that each player still uses the matching 1.3.3 client.
Troubleshooting the documented setup
The server does not start
- Confirm that you downloaded the server file, not only the client pack.
- Check that the archive was fully extracted and that
start_server.batis in the extracted server folder. - Run the script from its own directory so relative file paths resolve correctly.
- Read the console output for the first error before changing files. The official project information does not state a universal Java version or RAM minimum, so avoid applying an unverified setting as if it were a pack requirement.
A player cannot connect
- Verify that the player is using Equivalent Skies 1.3.3, Minecraft 1.12.2, and the same Forge context.
- Check that the player is connecting to the current server address and port supplied by the host.
- Make sure the server console has finished starting before attempting to join.
- If only one player fails, have that player recreate or repair the local pack profile rather than changing the server files immediately.
The island commands do not work as expected
- Have the joining player run
/island leavefirst. - Have an island member send
/island invite <player name>using the exact in-game name. - Have the invitee run
/island joinafter receiving the invitation. - Confirm that both players are on the same Equivalent Skies world; commands on another server will not affect this island.
You are unsure which files to change
Do not delete configuration or world files as a first troubleshooting step. Stop the server, make a backup of the entire directory, record the console error, and compare the installation against a freshly extracted copy of the same 1.3.3 server archive. This preserves the existing world while you isolate a damaged or missing file.
Requirements the project does not publish
The available Equivalent Skies documentation does not establish an official minimum amount of RAM, a supported player count, a performance benchmark, a required Java runtime, firewall instructions, port-forwarding steps, or a specific operating-system matrix. Those details depend on the host environment and should be verified separately rather than presented as pack-certified specifications.

Likewise, no independent performance study or capacity test is cited for this pack. A server that works for one group may need different resources under another world size, view distance, mod activity level, or number of concurrent players. Start with the official package, observe the server console and host behavior, and scale the environment based on actual use.
