Equal Earth Map in Office: Add a Free Map to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint

Yes, you can add an Equal Earth map to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without buying a map package. Download a free Equal Earth image or SVG, then insert it as a picture. This gives you a static map for a report, slide, handout, or annotation.

Excel’s native Map Chart is a different tool. Microsoft documents Mercator, Miller, Albers, and Robinson as its projection choices—not Equal Earth. Use Map Chart when you need regions colored from spreadsheet data; use a downloaded Equal Earth file when the projection itself is the requirement.

Equal Earth projection versus an Office map chart

Equal Earth is a cartographic projection, while an SVG, PNG, or PDF download is a rendered map made with that projection. Inserting the file places artwork on the page. It does not create a live geographic chart that reads rows, recognizes locations, or updates when data changes.

The projection is intended to show the relative area of continents more fairly than familiar cylindrical world maps. Read the projection background at equal-earth.com/equal-earth-projection.html if you need to explain the cartographic choice in a report or classroom handout.

Microsoft’s Map Chart feature is designed to compare values or categories across geographic regions. Its documented creation path is Insert > Charts > Maps > Filled Map, and its documented projection list does not include Equal Earth. Consequently, changing a Map Chart setting will not turn it into an Equal Earth map.

Choose the route that matches your goal

Route Use it when What you receive Important limitation
Download and insert an Equal Earth SVG or image You need the Equal Earth appearance for a static report, poster, slide, worksheet, or map to mark up A picture positioned on the page or slide; some SVG files may remain scalable It is not a data-linked chart. Editing individual countries depends on the file structure and the Office version.
Create an Excel Map Chart You need spreadsheet values or categories to color geographic regions and update with data A native chart tied to geographic data Equal Earth is not a listed projection. Microsoft also specifies subscription and online requirements for creating or appending map data.

For a static map, decide whether you need labels, an unlabelled base for your own annotations, separately grouped country shapes, or a very large output. For a data-driven chart, check that your location column is geographic data Excel can recognize and that your edition and connection meet Microsoft’s requirements.

Download a free Equal Earth file

The Equal Earth publisher provides free map downloads and notes that the files can be printed. The download page displayed version 1.5 dated October 8, 2026; check the page again when you download because files and terms can change: https://www.equal-earth.com/.

  1. Choose the map type. Select a labeled reference map if readers must identify countries immediately. Choose a blank map for coloring, classroom exercises, or your own labels. If you need to recolor countries separately, look for a file whose shapes are grouped by country rather than a single flattened image.
  2. Choose a format. SVG is usually the best starting point for a line drawing that must stay sharp when enlarged. PNG or another raster image is simpler when you only need to place the map and do not need separate shapes. A PDF may be suitable for printing but is not the same as an editable Office graphic.
  3. Read the file’s license and intended-use notes. “Free download” does not automatically mean that every redistribution, modification, or commercial use has identical terms. Keep the license information with your project, especially if you are publishing the document or distributing a slide deck.
  4. Save the original file. Work from a copy so you can return to the unmodified map if labels, colors, or line weights become unsuitable.

A blank grouped SVG is also described on Wikimedia Commons at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ABlank_world_map_Equal_Earth_projection.svg. Treat the Commons file’s own licensing and attribution information as controlling for that file; do not assume that terms from one download apply to another.

Insert an Equal Earth map in Word

Word treats a downloaded map as a picture. The labels can vary slightly between Windows, macOS, and the web app, but the workflow is the same.

  1. Open the document and click where the map should appear.
  2. Choose Insert > Pictures, then select the command for a picture from your computer or device.
  3. Select the downloaded SVG, PNG, or other supported image and insert it.
  4. Select the map and open Picture Format. Set Wrap Text to Square, Tight, or In Front of Text when you need to position it freely; use In Line with Text when the map should move as part of a paragraph.
  5. Resize with a corner handle or the Size controls. Keep the aspect ratio locked so the projection is not stretched horizontally or vertically.
  6. Add a caption, source note, or legend as ordinary Word text. Do not bake essential explanatory text into a low-resolution image if the document must remain accessible.

When a Word document needs a live data visual

Word is not the right place to create a geographic data chart from scratch. Build the chart in Excel, then copy it into Word. Microsoft’s chart guidance explains the general insertion and reuse workflow at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/word/add-a-chart-to-your-document-in-word. The copied chart can remain linked to the workbook or be embedded, depending on the paste option you choose; either way, it will use Excel’s supported map projections rather than Equal Earth.

Insert an Equal Earth map in PowerPoint

  1. Open the target slide and select the location for the map.
  2. Use Insert > Pictures and choose the command that imports a picture from your device.
  3. Insert the Equal Earth SVG or image, then use Picture Format to set its size, alignment, and text wrapping behavior. PowerPoint normally lets you position the picture freely on the slide.
  4. For a presentation, keep labels large enough to survive the room’s viewing distance. A labeled world map that is readable on a monitor can become illegible when reduced to a narrow column.
  5. Use Selection Pane or a separate shape behind the map when you need a consistent background or want to keep several overlays organized.

If the slide needs values that change with a workbook, create an Excel chart and copy it to PowerPoint. On the mobile Word and PowerPoint versions covered by Microsoft’s mobile help, charts cannot be created directly in the app; Microsoft instructs users to copy a chart from Excel instead: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/insert-a-chart-in-powerpoint-or-word-on-a-mobile-device.

Insert the map in Excel as a static picture

Excel can hold an Equal Earth graphic even though its native Map Chart does not offer that projection. This is useful for a worksheet that combines a reference map with a table, notes, or manually entered annotations.

  1. Open the worksheet and select the area where the map should sit.
  2. Choose Insert > Pictures and import the downloaded file.
  3. Resize from a corner while preserving the aspect ratio. Use Picture Format > Align to line the map up with nearby cells.
  4. If the map should scroll with the worksheet, leave it as an ordinary floating picture or use the available Move and size with cells setting in the picture properties. Test the behavior after changing row heights and column widths.
  5. For a printable worksheet, open Page Layout and check the print area, orientation, scaling, and margins. Preview before exporting to PDF.

A picture inserted this way will not recolor countries automatically when values change. Add your own transparent shapes or annotations only when the map’s license permits modification and the file’s geometry makes that practical.

Create an Excel Map Chart when data matters more than the projection

Use this route for a choropleth-style visual in which spreadsheet values determine the color or category of each recognized geographic region.

  1. Put geographic names in one column and the corresponding values or categories in another. Use unambiguous names and keep the geographic level consistent instead of mixing countries with unrelated localities.
  2. Select the data range, including the geographic field and the values or categories.
  3. Choose Insert > Charts > Maps > Filled Map.
  4. Wait for Excel to resolve the locations and draw the regions. If a name is ambiguous, revise the source text so Excel can identify the intended geography.
  5. Use the chart’s formatting controls to change the series, legend, colors, and title. Microsoft’s formatting documentation lists the available projection choices as Mercator, Miller, Albers, and Robinson: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/format-a-map-chart.
  6. Save the workbook, then copy the chart into Word or PowerPoint when you need the same data visual in a document or presentation.

Microsoft states that Map Chart availability requires Microsoft 365 subscription access. It also states that creating or appending map data requires an online connection to the Bing Map service, while existing maps can be viewed offline. Those requirements can change with the Office channel, account, or policy, so verify them in the edition you actually use. The creation guide is at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/create-a-map-chart-in-excel?ad=us&rs=en-us&ui=en-us.

Can an Equal Earth SVG become editable country shapes?

Some SVG downloads contain separate, grouped country paths. In a compatible desktop Office build, an SVG may expose additional graphic-editing or conversion commands that let you work with those paths. That behavior is version-dependent, and the Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish one conversion procedure that works in every desktop, web, or mobile edition.

Do not promise an editable-country workflow merely because a file ends in .svg. A file can contain one compound path, labels on separate layers, or groups that Office preserves differently. Before committing to a coloring exercise:

  • Make a copy of the original SVG.
  • Insert it in the exact desktop Office edition that will be used for the final file.
  • Check whether the available graphic commands expose individual groups or only the whole image.
  • Test a few countries, labels, borders, and islands at the intended output size.
  • If the groups are not editable, use the SVG as a background and place transparent or filled shapes over the regions, or use a different licensed grouped file.

When a map will be edited by several people, a flattened PNG can be more predictable than an SVG whose handling changes between applications. When scaling quality and crisp borders are the priority, keep the original SVG and export a final copy only after layout is complete.

Keep labels, colors, and accessibility readable

Labels and legends

World maps contain many small countries and islands. Use a labeled file for orientation, but avoid shrinking it until names become decorative noise. If your message concerns only selected regions, add a short legend and callouts rather than relying on every country label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color choices

For a blank map, choose fills that preserve the country boundaries. Pale fills with dark outlines work well for printing; saturated adjacent colors can merge on a projector. If the map communicates categories, repeat the category names in a legend and do not rely on color alone.

Alternative text and source notes

In Word or PowerPoint, open the picture’s accessibility or alt-text command and describe the map’s purpose, not every coastline. For example, state that it is an Equal Earth world map showing the countries selected in the accompanying table. Add the download source and license information in a caption or notes section.

Print and export considerations

Free digital files do not make a large physical map free to produce. The publisher notes that large maps may be taken to a print shop. Ask the shop about the required file format, color mode, bleed, and final dimensions before exporting. Keep text and line weights large enough for the finished size, and inspect a proof if country labels are important.

For a Word or PowerPoint PDF, export at the application’s highest available quality and inspect thin borders, small type, and transparent overlays. For Excel, use print preview and set the page orientation before changing the scaling percentage; aggressive “fit to one page” settings can make a world map unreadable.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The map looks stretched. It was resized from a side handle or the aspect ratio was unlocked. Undo the resize, use a corner handle, and lock proportions in the picture size controls.
The image is blurry in print. A small raster file was enlarged. Download an SVG or a larger source file, then replace the inserted picture before final export.
Countries cannot be recolored separately. The file is flattened, or the Office edition does not expose SVG groups. Use a grouped, licensed SVG; test it in the target desktop edition; otherwise overlay your own shapes or keep the map static.
Excel’s Map Chart does not look like Equal Earth. Map Chart uses its own supported projection list. Insert a downloaded Equal Earth file for the projection, or accept a native Map Chart projection for data-driven coloring.
The Map Chart will not create or update. The account, subscription, geographic data, or online connection is not sufficient. Check the Microsoft 365 entitlement, connect to the internet, simplify or clarify the location field, and retry in supported desktop Excel.
A phone or tablet cannot make the chart. The listed mobile Word and PowerPoint versions do not create charts directly. Create the chart in Excel, then copy it into the mobile document or presentation.
Labels disappear in a slide show. The map was reduced too far or labels have insufficient contrast. Use a larger crop, fewer labels, stronger contrast, or separate callout slides.
The printed map is clipped. The picture extends beyond the page or slide-safe area. Check page or slide margins, use print preview, and reduce the map slightly while preserving its proportions.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need the Equal Earth projection itself? Download and insert an Equal Earth asset.
  • Need values to drive geographic colors? Build an Excel Map Chart, accepting its supported projections.
  • Need a static map in a Word report? Insert the SVG or image and set wrapping and size.
  • Need a presentation visual? Insert the map on a PowerPoint slide and test label size from the back of the room.
  • Need a chart in mobile Word or PowerPoint? Create it in Excel and copy it over.
  • Need country-by-country editing? Select a grouped file, verify the target desktop Office version, and confirm the license before modifying it.
  • Need a wall-size copy? Preserve a scalable source and confirm print-shop specifications before export.
