The Epson Home Cinema 3800 is a 3LCD home-theater projector with 4K-compatible, pixel-shifted image processing—not a native 4K projector. Epson rates it at 3,000 lumens for both color and white brightness and gives it a flexible zoom and lens shift, but those are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results. Its room fit, signal chain, lamp upkeep, and current availability deserve as much attention as its headline resolution.
What the Epson Home Cinema 3800 is—and what “4K” means here
Epson identifies the Home Cinema 3800 as model V11H959020. It uses three LCD chips and Epson’s “4K PRO-UHD” and “4K Enhancement” terminology. Epson lists resolution processing as 1920 × 1080 × 2, and its launch description says the projector uses pixel shifting across three high-definition LCD chips. In practical terms, it accepts compatible 4K signals and uses pixel-shifted processing; it does not have a native 3840 × 2160 imaging panel. Epson’s product page and its 2019 launch announcement describe the product and processing approach.

That distinction matters if native 4K resolution is a requirement. “4K-compatible” describes the signal a projector can accept; it does not, on its own, describe the native resolution of its imaging hardware. Epson’s user guide explains that compatible 4K signals are converted for output as an HDR image. The HC 3200/3800 user guide also covers supported signal formats.
Brightness, contrast, and HDR claims
Epson’s current specifications list 3,000 lumens of color brightness and 3,000 lumens of white brightness. These are published manufacturer ratings, not independently measured brightness results. The company also lists support for HDR10 and HLG and claims contrast “up to 100,000:1”; that contrast figure is Epson’s stated maximum, not a verified measurement in the available evidence. Epson’s specifications and documentation provide the cited format and performance details.

- 4K PRO-UHD (1) Projection technology — a new type of 4K home theater experience, utilizing advanced technologies for resolution Enhancement, color and image processing
- True 3-chip projector design — Advanced 3LCD technology displays 100 percent of the RGB color signal for every frame without any “rainbow effect” or color brightness issues
- 4K resolution processing — pixel-shifting technology precisely controls three individual, high-definition LCD chips to parallel process millions of pixels
- Full 10-bit HDR (2) — accepts 100 percent of the HDR source information to faithfully reproduce HDR content for an amazing visual performance, Plus hog support
- Digital video processing — Real-time, 12-bit analog-to-digital video processing for smooth tonal transitions; helps eliminate banding, blocking and other compression artifacts from the final visual performance
Brightness figures alone cannot tell you how the image will look in your room. Screen size, screen material, ambient light, picture mode, and installation all affect the result. Treat the 3,000-lumen ratings as a useful manufacturer specification, not a promise of a particular perceived brightness or HDR impact.
Will it fit your room?
The projector’s lens controls make placement more flexible than a fixed-lens design, but you still need to calculate the throw distance for your screen size and confirm that the lens can land on the screen from your intended mounting position. Epson lists a 1.32–2.15 throw ratio, 1–1.62× manual optical zoom, manual focus, and lens shift of ±60% vertically and ±24% horizontally. Those values are manufacturer specifications; installation geometry should be checked against the screen dimensions and the projector’s manual before mounting.

| Placement item | Epson specification | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Throw ratio | 1.32–2.15 | Calculate projector-to-screen distance for your screen width and confirm the intended position falls within the range. |
| Optical zoom | 1–1.62×, manual | Zoom changes image size within the available range; it does not eliminate the need for a suitable throw distance. |
| Lens shift | ±60% vertical and ±24% horizontal, manual | Use lens shift to position the image optically within its range; verify the exact screen and mount geometry. |
| Focus and keystone | Manual focus; manual keystone correction | Focus sharpens the image. Keystone is digital geometry correction, not a substitute for getting the projector and screen aligned. |
| Projection orientations | Table, front/rear, and ceiling projection listed by Epson | Choose the orientation and mounting position before finalizing the installation. |
Because throw ratio depends on screen width, a screen diagonal alone is not enough to confirm fit. Epson’s setup documentation is the appropriate reference for supported installation and signal details; measure the room and consult the manual rather than relying on a generic placement estimate.

Epson specifies 18 Gbps HDMI 2.0 support and compatibility with 4K HDR signals up to 60 Hz. This describes the projector’s supported input capability, not a guarantee that every source will deliver the same format. The source device, receiver or switch, HDMI cable, port selection, and settings all need to support the intended signal. A bottleneck anywhere in that chain can limit what reaches the projector. The available specifications do not establish an input-lag result, so they are not enough to assess gaming responsiveness.

An 18 Gbps connection is relevant to compatible 4K HDR sources, but the evidence does not establish that a premium HDMI cable is required. Check the capability and configuration of the equipment already in your signal path before replacing cables or adding components.
Sound and streaming: what is built in
The Home Cinema 3800 includes rear-firing dual 10 W speakers and aptX Bluetooth audio support, according to Epson. Those features can accommodate casual viewing or a simple setup, but they should not be mistaken for a dedicated home-theater audio system. RTINGS’ listing says the projector has no Android TV, so do not assume it provides built-in Android TV apps. Depending on your setup, you may need a separate streaming device, audio system, or both. Epson’s product page lists the built-in audio features; RTINGS’ listing is the source for the Android TV observation.

Lamp life, maintenance, and warranty
Epson lists a 250 W UHE lamp and rated life of up to 5,000 hours in Eco mode, 4,000 hours in Medium, and 3,500 hours in High. These are manufacturer ratings, not guarantees of how long a lamp will last in every installation. Actual replacement timing depends on use and operating conditions. The cited US/Canada product context lists a 90-day limited lamp warranty and a two-year limited projector warranty; warranty terms can vary by region and should be confirmed for the specific unit and purchase.

Price and availability
On October 4, 2026, Epson’s US product page displayed a price of $1,799.99 and marked the projector “Out of Stock.” That is a dated page observation, not a reliable statement of current retailer stock or street price. Epson’s 2019 launch announcement gave an original US MSRP of $1,699.99 and said availability would begin in October at Best Buy and November at Amazon; that launch-era MSRP is historical context, not today’s price. Check current retailer listings for availability, price, seller, and whether a unit is new or used. Epson’s US product page is the source for the dated price and stock display, and the 2019 announcement records the original MSRP and launch timing.
Who should consider the Home Cinema 3800?
The HC 3800 is worth considering if you want a 3LCD projector with 4K signal compatibility and pixel-shifted processing, substantial manual optical placement adjustment, and manufacturer-rated brightness of 3,000 lumens for both color and white output. It is a less suitable match if you specifically require a native 3840 × 2160 panel, built-in Android TV, or a verified gaming-latency result. The cited evidence does not support naming it a winner over competing projectors; a fair comparison would need equivalent independent measurements and current pricing for the alternatives.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that pixel-shifted 4K processing meets your resolution expectations.
- Measure screen width and projector location, then check throw and lens-shift limits.
- Verify that the complete source-to-projector chain supports your intended 4K HDR format.
- Plan for external streaming or audio equipment if the built-in features do not meet your needs.
- Check live price, stock, condition, regional warranty terms, and lamp support before buying.
