Epson EcoTank ET-4950 vs. ET-4850: Which All-in-One Printer Is Right for You?

For a new purchase, choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4950. Epson lists the ET-4850 as discontinued and identifies the ET-4950 as its replacement. The two are closely related home-office color all-in-ones with refillable ink tanks, an automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, faxing, networking, and a 250-sheet paper tray.

The ET-4850 can still make sense as remaining stock or a used printer, but only when the listing is substantially cheaper and the seller provides clear condition, warranty, and return information. The ET-4950 is the lower-risk choice for most buyers because it is the current model and its documented specifications include automatic duplex scanning through the ADF.

The short answer: buy the ET-4950 unless the ET-4850 is a verified bargain

Epson’s product information makes the lifecycle distinction decisive: the ET-4850 is discontinued, while the ET-4950 is its replacement. That does not mean the older printer suddenly stops working. It means new inventory, official support context, seller warranty coverage, and genuine replacement-supply availability deserve more scrutiny when you buy an ET-4850.

For a new printer from an authorized seller, the ET-4950 is the straightforward option. It retains the office-oriented features associated with the ET-4850 and adds a documented automatic duplex-scanning capability in its 30-sheet ADF. Epson rates it at 18 ISO pages per minute in black and 9 in color. The ET-4850 remains relevant mainly when a specific discounted listing is significantly less expensive and passes a careful inspection.

ET-4950 vs. ET-4850: feature comparison

The table separates documented similarities from missing figures. In particular, no independent testing establishes a speed, print-quality, reliability, or cost-per-page winner. Epson’s ISO speeds and page yields are manufacturer measurements or estimates, not a guarantee of what every household will experience.

What you get with the ET-4950

Office functions in one chassis

The ET-4950 combines color printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. Its 250-sheet tray is sized for routine home-office work rather than a large department, but it reduces the need to refill paper during a typical week. Automatic two-sided printing can reduce paper use for multipage documents, while the ADF lets you copy or scan a stack without placing every sheet on the flatbed individually.

Document-feeding and duplex scanning

Epson’s user guide describes a flatbed color CIS scanner with a main scan resolution of 1,200 dpi. The ADF accepts approximately 30 sheets in letter or A4 size, or 10 legal-size sheets. It supports automatic duplex scanning, so a double-sided original can be processed without manually flipping each page. The stated capacities are manufacturer specifications; they do not predict the time required for a particular stack or the quality of a real-world scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed and controls

Epson’s seventh-generation announcement gives the ET-4950 an ISO speed of 18 black pages per minute and 9 color pages per minute. ISO figures are intended for comparison under a defined method, not as a promise that a page containing photos, large graphics, or wireless processing will finish at that rate. The 2.4-inch color touchscreen provides on-device controls for common tasks and setup. Whether that screen feels preferable to physical buttons is a personal choice, but it can matter if you frequently copy or scan without opening a computer or phone app.

Connections and faxing

The ET-4950 is aimed at a home office that may need both wireless printing and traditional office functions. Mobile printing is included in Epson’s description, and fax is part of the model’s feature set. If your network requires a wired connection for a desktop, server, or reliability-sensitive workflow, check the exact regional specification before ordering rather than assuming that every listing exposes the same ports and software bundle.

What remains similar on the ET-4850

The core all-in-one workflow

The ET-4850 also combines printing, copying, scanning, and faxing with an ADF, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet tray, wireless networking, and Ethernet. For a household that mostly prints letters, schoolwork, invoices, and occasional color documents, those shared capabilities can make the older machine functionally adequate.

The touchscreen is not a meaningful upgrade by itself

Epson’s earlier-generation announcement described the ET-4850 with a 2.4-inch color touchscreen, and the current ET-4950 materials specify the same screen size. Treat the interface as a minor preference rather than a reason to pay a large premium. The stronger reasons to favor the ET-4950 are its current status, documented duplex scanning, and the reduced uncertainty that comes with buying the replacement model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every specification is identical

Shared chassis-level features do not prove that the firmware, bundled software, consumable packaging, or mechanical behavior is identical. Epson’s reviewed ET-4950 guide explicitly documents duplex scanning and ADF capacities. The ET-4850 product information reviewed for this comparison confirms an ADF and duplex printing, but does not establish the same automatic duplex-scanning specification. If two-sided scanning is central to your workflow, require the seller to confirm it for the exact ET-4850 unit.

Ink compatibility, page yields, and the real cost of ownership

Both models use Epson 502-series bottles

Epson’s consumables information lists 502-series ink as compatible with both the ET-4850 and ET-4950. Confirm the model name and bottle numbers on the live listing before buying. Compatibility is a practical advantage of the shared platform, but it does not eliminate the need to use the correct regional bottle and color.

Understand the different yield claims

Yield figure Where it applies How to interpret it
Up to 6,600 black and 5,500 color pages ET-4950 bottles included with the printer, according to Epson A conditional manufacturer estimate for the supplied bottles, not a guaranteed household total
7,500 black and 6,000 color pages Epson’s replacement-ink figure on the ET-4850 product information, using Epson’s stated ISO/IEC 24712 methodology An estimate under the cited test method for replacement ink; actual output varies
Up to 3 years of ink included ET-4950 marketing claim Depends on how much and what type of material you print; it is not a fixed service period
Up to 2 years of ink included ET-4850 marketing claim Also conditional on usage and Epson’s stated assumptions

Page yield is not the same as a promise that a family will print that many usable pages. Epson cautions that yield can be lower when a printer is used infrequently or when one color is consumed disproportionately. Photo-heavy pages, cleaning cycles, large filled graphics, and long gaps between jobs can all change consumption. Compare the bottle price and expected mix of black and color printing rather than multiplying a headline yield by your own monthly page count.

Why an independent cost-per-page number is missing

A trustworthy cost-per-page comparison would require current bottle prices, the exact regional ink package, and a defined test mix. Those inputs change over time, and no independent measurement is established here. Use Epson’s yields as a planning reference, then check the current price of genuine 502-series bottles in your market before committing to either model.

Price and availability in 2026

ET-4950 price snapshot

Epson America’s US product page showed the ET-4950 at $499.99 when it was crawled in October 2026. That is a page snapshot, not a guaranteed price at publication. Taxes, shipping, retailer discounts, regional bundles, and stock can change the amount. Check the live listing and confirm that the seller is offering a new ET-4950 rather than an open-box or refurbished unit.

What discontinued means for the ET-4850

Epson labels the ET-4850 discontinued and names the ET-4950 as its replacement. Remaining-stock sellers may still have new units, while used listings can be considerably cheaper. Discontinuation does not by itself indicate that every ET-4850 is defective; it does mean you should evaluate the individual unit instead of relying on the model name alone.

When the older model can be rational

Consider an ET-4850 only when all of the following are true:

  • The total price is meaningfully below a comparable new ET-4950 after shipping and tax.
  • The seller states whether it is new, open-box, refurbished, or used.
  • The listing identifies the included power cable, ink bottles, manuals, and accessories.
  • The seller explains the warranty period and who handles a claim.
  • The return window is long enough to test printing, scanning, feeding, networking, and fax functions.
  • The listing confirms that genuine 502-series ink is available in your region.

A small discount rarely compensates for an unknown printhead condition, dried ink, missing accessories, or a return process that leaves you paying two-way shipping.

Which printer fits each type of buyer?

Choose the ET-4950 for a new home-office setup

The ET-4950 is the safer default when you want a current model, a normal new-product warranty, and a documented duplex-scanning workflow. It is especially suitable for users who regularly process double-sided forms, need faxing, want a larger paper tray than a basic compact printer, or prefer to buy supplies through current retail channels.

Choose an ET-4850 only for a documented discount

The ET-4850 can be reasonable for light or moderate document work when a trusted seller offers a substantial discount and a usable return policy. Its shared ADF, fax, Ethernet, wireless, duplex-printing, and 250-sheet capabilities cover many ordinary home-office tasks. The purchase becomes less attractive when the seller cannot verify the unit’s condition, warranty, or consumables.

Neither model is automatically the right choice for photo specialists

The available manufacturer material establishes office functions, speeds, capacities, and ink compatibility. It does not establish independent photo-quality results, color accuracy, borderless performance, or long-term reliability. If those are your deciding criteria, do not treat the ET-4950’s replacement status or the ET-4850’s lower price as evidence of a quality advantage.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact model. Read the full model number in the cart and on the seller’s specification sheet. Do not assume that a similarly named EcoTank listing uses the same bottles or features.
  2. Check lifecycle status. For the ET-4950, verify that the listing is current stock. For the ET-4850, assume that warranty and returns depend heavily on the individual seller.
  3. Compare the delivered price. Include tax, shipping, replacement ink, and any required cable or accessory.
  4. Match the workflow. Decide whether you need fax, an ADF, automatic duplex printing, automatic duplex scanning, Ethernet, and a 250-sheet tray. Do not pay for a feature you will never use, but do not omit one that replaces a weekly manual task.
  5. Verify scanning details. If two-sided originals are common, ask specifically whether the exact unit performs automatic duplex scanning through its ADF.
  6. Check ink supply. Confirm that genuine 502-series black, cyan, magenta, and yellow bottles are sold in your country and that the seller has not substituted a different series.
  7. Read seller terms. Save the stated warranty, return period, restocking fee, and condition description before placing an order.
  8. Plan the network connection. If you need Ethernet, verify the port and regional specification rather than relying on a generic wireless-printer title.

  1. Inspect the printer for cracked panels, leaking bottles, missing caps, or shipping damage before powering it on.
  2. Complete the manufacturer’s initial ink-filling and printhead setup exactly as instructed. Do not improvise bottle handling or mix ink series.
  3. Print a text page and a color page, then make a copy from the flatbed and from the ADF.
  4. Load several sheets and test automatic two-sided printing. If duplex scanning matters, feed a short double-sided stack and confirm that both sides are captured in the resulting file.
  5. Connect through your intended network path. Test printing from the computer or phone that will actually be used, not only from the setup screen.
  6. If fax is required, verify the telephone connection and send a test to a known working destination before discarding the box.
  7. Record the ink levels and any error messages. A used ET-4850 with unexpectedly low or uneven ink can be a poor bargain even when the outside looks clean.

Common purchase mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing included ink with lifetime ink

Both models use optimistic duration language. Up to 3 years for the ET-4950 and up to 2 years for the ET-4850 are Epson claims tied to usage assumptions. They are not warranties that a household will print for that period without buying bottles.

Using the headline speed for every document

The ET-4950’s 18 black and 9 color ISO pages per minute are useful comparison figures. They do not describe photo pages, graphics-heavy reports, wireless delays, startup time, or the time required for scanning and finishing.

Assuming an old listing has current support

A marketplace page may reuse an old description or show stock that has been stored for years. Ask when the unit was purchased, whether it has been opened, and which party provides warranty service. A clear return path is more valuable than an unverified promise that the printer is new.

Ignoring one-color usage

Epson notes that yields may fall when printing is infrequent or one ink color is used heavily. A household that prints mostly black text will not necessarily get the same balance of pages as Epson’s mixed test pattern. Budget for the colors you actually consume.

How to make the final decision

Start with lifecycle, not a superficial specification difference. If both machines cost about the same, the ET-4950 wins because it is Epson’s current replacement and has a documented duplex-scanning ADF. If the ET-4850 is much cheaper, calculate the value of the discount against the seller’s warranty, return policy, condition, and the time you would spend troubleshooting an older unit.

Next, map the printer to your documents. A user who only prints occasional single-sided pages may not benefit from fax, duplex scanning, or a 250-sheet tray. A home office handling signed forms, tax documents, invoices, or double-sided packets can save substantial manual work with the ET-4950’s feeder and scanning workflow. Ethernet, touchscreen operation, and ink availability should be checked against your actual room, network, and supply situation.

Finally, treat Epson’s prices, page yields, and included-ink duration as dated, conditional information. Verify the live price, regional ink bottles, and seller terms on the day you order. On that basis, the ET-4950 is the sensible new-buy recommendation; the ET-4850 is a buy only when a specific, well-protected deal clearly compensates for its discontinued status.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
