Open Settings → Download Settings, clear that option, restart the launcher, and retry the download. If the connection is still slow, test wired Ethernet, check Epic’s service status, and use DNS, proxy, or cache troubleshooting to identify the bottleneck. For account safety, use a unique password, secure the email address attached to Epic, enable the two-factor method offered in your account, review linked accounts, and protect family settings with a six-digit parental-controls PIN.
Remove Epic’s download-speed limit first
A launcher-imposed cap can make a fast internet connection appear slow. Epic’s documented sequence is:

- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select the Settings icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Scroll to Download Settings.
- Clear Limit Download Speeds.
- Restart the launcher, then start the download again.
Use Epic’s current instructions if your launcher presents different wording: Epic’s download-speed-limit guide. This setting changes the limit imposed by the launcher; it does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan or remove congestion elsewhere.

Find out what is actually limiting the download
Download speed is determined by the slowest part of the path between Epic’s servers and your computer. Removing the launcher cap helps only when that cap was the limiting factor.

Use wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi is the weak link
For a desktop or console-style gaming setup, connect the device directly to the router with a wired Ethernet cable. Cat6 is a suitable cable type for this use case. Wired networking avoids the radio interference, signal loss through walls, and variable airtime that can make Wi-Fi fluctuate during a large game download.
Do not treat Ethernet as a guaranteed speed upgrade. It cannot raise the rate of a slow broadband plan, fix an overloaded router, repair a failing network adapter, or bypass an Epic-side outage. Compare the same download over Wi-Fi and Ethernet under similar conditions; the comparison is diagnostic, not a promise of a particular megabytes-per-second figure.

Check Epic’s service status
Open the status page before changing advanced settings. If Epic reports a download or login incident, local changes may not help until the service recovers. Record whether the problem affects one game or every download, because that distinction helps separate content-specific issues from a launcher-wide problem.

Try another connection
If practical, test a phone hotspot or another trusted network briefly. A different result points toward the original router, internet provider, DNS resolver, firewall, or proxy. It does not prove which component is at fault, so restore your normal connection after the test and change one variable at a time.
Allow Epic’s required domains
Security software, enterprise filters, and custom DNS services can block domains the launcher needs. Epic advises whitelisting its required domains. Use the domain list and instructions in the live slow-download support article rather than copying an old list from an unofficial guide; domain requirements can change.
Flush DNS or change the resolver
A stale or malfunctioning DNS resolver can delay connections or prevent the launcher from reaching an endpoint. Epic lists flushing DNS or switching to a public DNS service as troubleshooting steps. These actions may repair name-resolution failures, but they do not add bandwidth and are not guaranteed to increase a healthy connection’s transfer rate.
Disable a proxy for testing
Epic also recommends disabling proxy servers when diagnosing slow or failed downloads. A proxy can add another hop, apply filtering, or mishandle large transfers. Disable it only for a controlled test and only when doing so complies with your network’s policy; managed work or school networks may require the proxy.

Reset the launcher cache when downloads are stuck or abnormal
Cache files hold launcher web and session data. A stale or corrupted cache can cause unusual behavior, repeated failures, or a download that appears stuck. Clearing it resets that local state; it does not increase the bandwidth in your internet contract.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely. Confirm it is not still running in the system tray or background processes.
- On Windows, open the launcher’s documented Saved location and remove the documented folders whose names begin with webcache.
- On macOS, remove the documented webcache directory from the Epic Games Launcher cache location.
- Start the launcher again and retry the affected download.
Use Epic’s platform-specific instructions for the exact locations and current folder names: Epic Games Launcher cache-clearing guide. Delete only the cache items identified by Epic, not your installed games or the entire launcher data directory.
Review newer download controls in the launcher
Epic’s early-preview documentation describes additional controls that may appear only in certain launcher versions or preview channels. Depending on availability, you may see:
- Priority downloads to decide which queued item should transfer first.
- Separate download-speed limits for more granular throttling than the older global option.
- Scheduled downloads for choosing when transfers run.
- Install-location selection before a download begins.
- Notifications about download progress or completion.
- Download history for reviewing previous transfers.
These controls are version-dependent. If a label is missing, do not assume your installation is broken; compare your launcher version with Epic’s early-preview download-settings documentation and use the controls currently exposed in your account.

Secure the Epic account itself
Use a unique, long password
Choose a password that is not reused on another site. Reuse lets a breach elsewhere become an Epic account takeover. A password manager can generate and store a long random credential, while the email account receiving Epic messages should have its own unique password and protection.
Keep credentials private
Never give another person your Epic login, recovery codes, or email access. Epic’s Community Rules state: Keep account information safe and private. Giving access to your account puts you at risk.

Enable the available two-factor method
Open your Epic account’s security settings and enable the two-factor authentication method currently offered there. Epic’s cabined-account information identifies SMS-based two-factor authentication as an account feature, while noting that SMS two-factor authentication is unavailable for cabined accounts. Availability can therefore depend on account status and current Epic policy; use the method your settings actually provide. See Epic’s cabined-account information.
Protect the email account and linked consoles
The email address tied to Epic is part of the same security boundary. Turn on the email provider’s strongest available sign-in protection, review recovery details, and investigate unexpected password-reset messages. In Epic account settings, review connected accounts and remove any console or service access you do not recognize. A strong Epic password cannot compensate for a compromised email inbox or an unknown linked account.

Set parental controls with a six-digit PIN
For a family account, create a six-digit Parental Controls PIN that children cannot guess and do not reuse it as a device unlock code. Use Epic’s Parental Controls page for the current setup path and available switches: Epic Parental Controls.
Epic says these controls can apply across the Epic Games Store, Epic Games Launcher, and Fortnite. Configure the mature-content and related restrictions that match the child’s age, then test the account while signed in as the child to verify that the restrictions behave as intended. Keep the PIN private; sharing it defeats the control even when every restriction is enabled.
A practical order for fixing a slow download
- Check Download Settings and clear Limit Download Speeds.
- Restart the launcher and retry the same download.
- Check Epic Games Status.
- Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet, if available.
- Try another internet connection to isolate the local network.
- Check required-domain access, flush DNS or change DNS, and disable a proxy for a controlled test.
- Clear the launcher’s documented webcache folders, relaunch, and test again.
- If the launcher offers early-preview controls, inspect priority, scheduling, and per-download limits.
This sequence moves from the most direct setting to increasingly diagnostic actions. Stop when the cause is identified; changing several network variables at once makes the result harder to interpret.

What can change over time
Epic can revise launcher labels, preview features, account-security methods, and parental-control scope. A missing option is not necessarily a fault, and an old tutorial may show a path your version no longer uses. Before changing a security or download setting, check the linked Epic help page and the labels in your current launcher and account settings. The official pages are the authority for availability in your region, account type, and launcher version.
