The right enterprise AI infrastructure starts with the workload, not a server SKU. Define training, fine-tuning, inference, agentic-AI and simulation jobs; model size and precision; latency and concurrency targets; data location and retention; and your site’s power, cooling and network limits. Then choose between a validated AI factory, an integrated cluster, cloud or a hybrid design. A credible purchase includes accelerator memory and interconnects, measured storage and network performance, facility validation, software lifecycle support and a three-year operating model—not just a GPU count.
1. Turn business requirements into an infrastructure specification
Write a workload and constraints sheet before requesting quotations. NVIDIA’s reference-architecture guidance treats workload and infrastructure strategy as one design problem: compute must fit available space, power, cooling, network integration and existing operational tools.

Workload profile
- List model families, parameter counts, precision (for example, FP8, FP16 or INT8), context length and expected model-growth path.
- Separate pre-training, fine-tuning, batch inference, interactive inference, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, HPC and simulation. Each has a different balance of GPU memory, interconnect, storage and latency.
- Set measurable service levels: tokens per second, jobs per hour, first-token latency, p95 or p99 response time, concurrent users and acceptable queue time.
- Record checkpoint frequency, restart tolerance and the largest job that must fit on one node or one GPU island.
Data and governance profile
- Inventory data sources and formats, including databases, files, object stores, logs, images, video and streaming feeds.
- Estimate active dataset size, daily churn, embedding and index growth, checkpoint volume, retention period and backup copies.
- Specify sovereignty, residency, encryption, access-control, audit and regulatory requirements for every geography in which data or models may be processed.
- Decide whether on-premises, colocated, cloud or hybrid placement best meets latency, elasticity, egress, disaster-recovery and operational requirements.
Financial and operational baseline
Define success metrics and a three-year operating model before comparing quotes. Include hardware, software subscriptions, electricity, cooling, facilities work, support, spares, staffing, network circuits, migration and decommissioning. The cited material provides no universal enterprise ROI, total-cost figure or street price, so require a workload-specific business case.

Validated architectures reduce integration risk by combining compute, networking, storage and software in a tested bill of materials (BOM), topology and scale range. NVIDIA’s endorsement process looks for NVIDIA-certified nodes, vetted server BOMs, maximum-scale cluster BOMs and network topologies aligned with Enterprise Reference Architecture design points. Treat an endorsement as an integration starting point, not a promise of price, capacity or performance for your workload.

RTX PRO AI Factory
RTX PRO AI Factory designs use PCIe accelerators and air cooling for space- and power-constrained environments. They are particularly suited to inference, visual computing and mixed enterprise workloads where flexible host configurations matter more than maximum scale. Validate the chassis, slot width, airflow and power distribution: a compatible GPU name alone does not prove that a particular server can cool or power it.
HGX AI Factory
HGX designs target dense training and fine-tuning, large GPU-memory footprints and high-speed GPU interconnects. NVIDIA’s current reference overview states 15x higher token throughput for HGX B300 versus HGX H100; this is a vendor-stated figure, so request the test configuration, model, precision, batch size and scaling results that apply to your workload.
NVL72
NVL72 is a rack-scale architecture for massive-scale AI output. The same NVIDIA overview states 50x increased AI Factory output for NVL72. That claim is not a universal benchmark: confirm the definition of output and the facility requirements before using it in capacity planning. Rack-scale systems demand early work on liquid cooling or high-capacity airflow, power distribution, floor loading, service clearances and network topology.

| Choice | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Validated AI factory or OEM appliance | Teams that value faster deployment and lower integration risk | Exact BOM, firmware and driver versions, topology, acceptance tests, replacement SLA, supported Kubernetes and orchestration stack |
| Integrated custom cluster | Organizations needing unusual accelerator mixes, storage protocols, networking or facility constraints | Interoperability testing, burn-in, failure-domain design, spare parts, lifecycle ownership and proof that components work together at planned scale |
| Cloud or hybrid | Elastic demand, variable utilization or a site that cannot support the required power and cooling | Data-transfer and egress cost, residency, latency, quota availability, persistent-storage performance, reservation terms and an on-premises exit path |
3. Specify servers and accelerators precisely
Ask suppliers to quote a complete node, not an accelerator in isolation. Your specification should include:
- Exact GPU model, memory capacity and memory type; NVLink or other GPU-to-GPU interconnect; thermal design and power draw.
- Host CPU model and socket count, host RAM capacity and speed, PCIe generation and lane allocation.
- GPU form factor and slot width, local NVMe capacity and endurance, NIC count and speed, DPU requirements, redundant power supplies and remote-management controller.
- Rack height, front-to-back airflow, supported operating systems, secure-boot options and service clearances.
NVIDIA’s validated-design material lists the RTX PRO 6000 at 600 W, dual-slot and 96 GB GDDR7, and the RTX PRO 4500 as a 165 W, single-slot accelerator. Those electrical and mechanical values must be matched to the server’s slot, cooling and power budget.

Examples of validated node patterns
| Server pattern | Accelerator configuration | Validated scale range and design code |
|---|---|---|
| Dell PowerEdge XE7740/XE7745 | RTX PRO 6000 or H200 NVL | 4–16 nodes; 2-8-5-200 |
| HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen12 | RTX PRO 6000 | 16–32 nodes |
| Lenovo SR680a V3 | HGX B200 or H200 | 4–32 nodes; 2-8-9-400 |
| Supermicro systems | Validated configurations vary by system | 4–32 nodes |
Use these as examples of published scale ranges, not as a universal shortlist. Require evidence for firmware qualification, GPU-driver support, Kubernetes and orchestration integration, burn-in, acceptance testing and failed-node replacement. A component’s model number does not establish those services.
4. Design storage as a tiered data path
AI clusters often stall on data movement rather than arithmetic. Separate storage roles so a checkpoint storm does not interfere with interactive inference or metadata-heavy retrieval.
Hot training and checkpoint tier
Use the fastest shared or local tier for active datasets, temporary shuffles and checkpoints. Measure sustained reads and writes at the planned node count, checkpoint completion time, latency and concurrent-job behavior. Include resilience, snapshots and replication; a fast device that cannot recover within your restart objective is not a complete design.
Shared file, object and archive tiers
- File storage fits POSIX-style training data, shared project directories and metadata-sensitive workloads. Test small-file operations, directory-scale metadata and NFS or SMB behavior where applicable.
- Object storage fits durable datasets, model artifacts, logs and long-retention copies. Validate S3-compatible semantics, lifecycle rules, versioning and restore throughput.
- Backup and archive should have a documented retention policy, immutable or protected copies where required, replication geography and a measured recovery-time objective.
Integration and observability checklist
- Confirm NFS, SMB or S3 protocols required by applications, plus CSI drivers for Kubernetes.
- Validate GPUDirect Storage or an equivalent data path if direct GPU-to-storage transfers are part of the design.
- Request telemetry for throughput, latency, queue depth, metadata operations, hot spots, failed drives and rebuilds.
- Test data extraction and indexing with production-like file counts and concurrency, not a single sequential stream.
NVIDIA identifies DDN, Dell, HPE, Hitachi Vantara, IBM, NetApp, Nutanix, Pure Storage, VAST Data and WEKA as collaborators for its AI Data Platform. NVIDIA’s March 18, 2025 announcement reports vendor maxima of up to 1.6x storage performance versus CPU-based approaches, up to 50% lower power, more than 3x performance per watt, up to 48% faster AI storage traffic and up to 15x faster data extraction. These are vendor-reported maxima, not universal benchmarks; demand test data for your dataset, protocol and concurrency.
5. Build two deliberate networks: GPU fabric and storage fabric
Document the topology before selecting switch ports. GPU east-west traffic, storage traffic and management traffic may need separate fabrics or carefully engineered quality-of-service policies.

NVIDIA’s endorsement process explicitly evaluates whether network topology follows Enterprise Reference Architecture design points, with Spectrum-X as an endorsement dimension. Compare Ethernet or Spectrum-X and other fabric choices on measured application performance, congestion behavior, ecosystem support, telemetry and operational skills—not on nominal bandwidth alone.

6. Prove the rack can run the system
Facility readiness is a procurement gate. Calculate steady-state and peak power for GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, NICs, DPUs, fans and conversion losses, then add UPS and generator headroom. Check breaker ratings, power-distribution-unit limits, redundancy mode, floor loading, airflow direction, noise, maintenance clearances and liquid-cooling capability.
Published planning anchors
| Configuration | Rack power example | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | 2.2 kW | HPE Private Cloud AI configuration assessed by IDC in 2025 |
| Small | 12 kW | HPE Private Cloud AI configuration assessed by IDC in 2025 |
| Medium | 13 kW | HPE Private Cloud AI configuration assessed by IDC in 2025 |
| Large | 17.4 kW | HPE Private Cloud AI configuration assessed by IDC in 2025 |
The same assessment associates these configurations with 400GbE networking. They are reference examples, not a guarantee that your rack, UPS or cooling plant can support the load. Recheck utility capacity and cooling design with the facilities team before signing a hardware order; a server quote is not proof of site readiness.
7. Treat software, security and lifecycle as part of the infrastructure
Map every software layer to a supported matrix: GPU driver, CUDA and container runtime, Kubernetes, GPU Operator, Network Operator, inference services such as NIM, schedulers such as Run:ai and monitoring agents. Record versions, upgrade order, rollback method and the support branch for each cluster.
Security controls to require
- Central identity, least-privilege roles, secrets management and tenant isolation.
- Audit trails for data, models, prompts, administrative actions and network access.
- Secure boot, signed firmware, vulnerability response targets and a patch window that does not corrupt checkpoints.
- Encryption in transit and at rest, model-access policy, data-loss controls and geography-aware placement.
Operations and support
- Automated provisioning, inventory, health checks, firmware management and observability.
- Capacity scheduling, quotas, chargeback or showback, priority classes and noisy-neighbor controls.
- Documented incident response, spare-node strategy, GPU and drive replacement procedure, and disaster-recovery tests.
- Named service-level objectives for hardware replacement, software escalation and security fixes.
NVIDIA AI Enterprise documents separate application and infrastructure layers, compatibility explorers, release branches and end-of-support dates. Use those matrices to set a lifecycle calendar; do not assume that a new GPU remains supported for the life of an older cluster.

8. Compare suppliers on evidence, not logos
Build a scored comparison using the same questions for every bidder:
- Architecture transparency: Is the complete BOM, topology, firmware baseline and validated scale range available?
- Accelerator supply: Are the quoted GPU, memory and interconnect capacities guaranteed for the delivery region and date?
- Storage proof: What sustained bandwidth, metadata rate, tail latency and recovery results were measured with your data shape?
- Network proof: What application throughput, congestion and failure results were measured at your node count?
- Facility fit: What are peak and steady-state rack power, cooling method, inlet conditions, floor load and service clearances?
- Software lifecycle: Which driver, Kubernetes, operator, scheduler and monitoring versions are supported, and until when?
- Security and compliance: Which secure-boot, firmware-signing, identity, audit and residency controls are included?
- Deployment and support: Who installs, burns in and accepts the cluster, and what are response and replacement terms?
- Interoperability and exit: Can data, models, telemetry and schedules move to another platform without proprietary lock-in?
- Three-year cost: What are hardware, software, energy, cooling, support, staffing, spares and decommissioning costs?
NVIDIA’s partner lists can create an initial shortlist, but they do not establish price, contract terms, regional stock or suitability for your workload.
9. A practical purchase and acceptance sequence
- Baseline demand. Capture model sizes, precision, throughput, latency, concurrency, data growth, retention and geography.
- Set facility limits. Obtain usable rack power, cooling capacity, floor loading, network uplinks and maintenance windows from facilities.
- Choose the architecture family. Decide whether PCIe RTX PRO, dense HGX, rack-scale NVL72, a validated appliance, an integrated build, cloud or hybrid placement fits the constraints.
- Issue a requirements-based request. Require complete server, storage, network, software, support and facility assumptions in every response.
- Run a proof test. Use representative models and data. Measure tokens per second, job completion, checkpoint time, p95/p99 latency, storage metadata behavior, network tail latency and recovery from component failure.
- Perform an acceptance review. Check serialised BOM, firmware and driver versions, burn-in logs, monitoring, security controls, documentation and spare inventory.
- Approve operations. Verify provisioning, patching, rollback, incident response, capacity policy, chargeback and disaster-recovery procedures before production workloads arrive.
- Reforecast quarterly. Compare actual utilization, energy, queue time, storage growth and failure rates with the three-year model, and adjust capacity before demand exceeds the facility or support envelope.
10. Common buying mistakes and their fixes
Buying GPU count instead of usable throughput
Two systems with the same GPU count can differ in memory, interconnect, host lanes, storage path and network oversubscription. Require end-to-end application results and the exact configuration behind them.
Assuming every GPU fits every chassis
Power, slot width, airflow and firmware support can invalidate an otherwise attractive component list. Use a validated node BOM and inspect mechanical and electrical limits.
Benchmarking one sequential storage stream
Training jobs, checkpoint storms and retrieval systems create mixed, concurrent I/O. Test small files, metadata, random access, sustained throughput, snapshots and rebuilds under realistic concurrency.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Leaving networking until the end
Late switch or optic changes can force a topology redesign. Freeze GPU and storage fabrics, RDMA requirements, redundancy and telemetry in the initial architecture.
Ignoring the building
Rack power and cooling limits can delay delivery after the purchase order. Obtain signed facilities calculations for breakers, UPS, generators, airflow or liquid loops, floor loading and service access first.
Underpricing lifecycle work
Drivers, operators, firmware, security fixes, failed-node replacement and capacity scheduling consume budget. Tie every layer to a support branch, end-of-support date, owner and maintenance procedure.
11. What a defensible decision looks like
A defensible enterprise AI purchase has a traceable line from workload requirements to accelerator memory, node topology, storage tiers, network fabrics, rack power, software versions and support terms. It includes workload-specific proof rather than universal benchmark claims, a facility sign-off, an acceptance test and a three-year operating model. If integration risk and time-to-value dominate, a validated architecture is usually the safer starting point. If requirements are unusual and your team can own interoperability and lifecycle testing, an integrated build can provide more control. Cloud or hybrid placement is sensible when demand is elastic or the site cannot support the required density, provided sovereignty, latency, egress and exit costs are explicit.
