Enshrouded supports online co-op for groups of up to 16 players, plus solo and offline play. At the Steam 1.0 launch on October 15, 2026, it did not support cross-platform play, so PC and PlayStation players could not join the same session. Keen Games says cross-play is in development but has not provided an arrival estimate.
Enshrouded multiplayer: the short answer
Enshrouded is built around cooperative online play, but you do not need a group to play it. Keen Games’ official FAQ describes three practical ways to play: start a solo world, play offline, or host or join an online co-op world. The same FAQ recommends groups of up to 16 players.

The important limitation is platform compatibility. Keen Games’ October 13, 2026 launch FAQ states that Enshrouded would not be cross-platform at launch. The game reached 1.0 on Steam on October 15, 2026, so that limitation applied to the 1.0 release. The studio says it is working on cross-platform play, but has no current estimate for when it will be available. Treat cross-play as unavailable unless a newer official announcement changes that status.
Does Enshrouded have crossplay?
Not at the 1.0 launch. Cross-play, also called cross-platform play, means that people using different hardware platforms can share one multiplayer session. The launch FAQ specifically says Enshrouded would not be cross-platform at launch and that work toward the feature was ongoing without an estimated completion date.
#1 Best Overall
That means a friend on a different platform, such as PlayStation while you are on PC, cannot currently join your Enshrouded world simply by using the same account or game invite. A Steam player should plan on playing with other players who own the compatible PC version. Do not rely on forum predictions or a retailer’s future-looking platform language as a release date; Keen Games has not published one in the cited announcement.
Cross-play is separate from dedicated-server support. A dedicated server can keep a world available for players on a compatible platform, but it does not bypass the platform restriction. Renting or self-hosting a server therefore will not make a PC-and-console group cross-play.
How many people can play Enshrouded together?
Keen Games says players can set out with up to 16 people. That is the official group-size guidance available for the game. It is not a promise that every third-party server configuration, network, or future platform edition will expose identical settings.
For a smaller group, ordinary co-op hosting is usually the simplest arrangement. One player starts the world and invites the others. For a group that wants people to enter at different times, a dedicated server is more suitable because the world can remain available when its original host is offline.
- Solo: play alone without coordinating with anyone else.
- Offline: play without an online multiplayer connection.
- Online co-op: invite friends into a host’s active world.
- Dedicated server: keep a persistent world running independently of the original host’s game session.
Ordinary co-op or a dedicated server?
You can play with friends without paying for or configuring a dedicated server. The choice depends mainly on when your group plays and who should be responsible for the world.
| Consideration | Normal host session | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Must the original host be online? | Yes. The host starts the session before others can join. | No. The server can stay available while the original host is offline. |
| Cost | No separate server rental is required; players need the game. | A rental normally has a recurring charge. Self-hosting uses your own hardware and connection; exact operating costs are not stated by Keen Games. |
| Setup | Start the game and use its multiplayer invite flow. | Install and run the dedicated-server executable, or configure a provider’s service. |
| World persistence | The world is tied to the host’s sessions and save management. | The server process can keep the world available between individual play sessions. |
| Administration | The host handles invitations and in-game decisions. | Someone must manage the server, access, updates, saves, and any provider controls. |
| Location and latency | Connection quality is influenced by the host’s location and upload connection. | You can select a provider region where offered, or choose the machine and network used for self-hosting. |
| Backups | Use the host’s normal save and backup practices. | Check the provider’s backup policy or create and test your own copies; Keen Games does not specify a universal backup schedule. |
| Player capacity | Plan around the official recommendation of up to 16 players. | Check the selected server configuration and provider limits. Provider-specific slot policies are not established by the official FAQ. |
| Platform compatibility | Players must use compatible versions; cross-platform play was unavailable at 1.0. | A server does not remove that restriction. |
For a couple of friends who play at the same time, normal co-op avoids administration. For a larger or irregularly scheduled group, dedicated hosting prevents the “world owner is away” problem. Before renting, verify the provider’s current regions, slot count, price, backups, modification policy, support, and game-version compatibility; those details vary by provider and are not universal Enshrouded specifications.
How to set up an Enshrouded dedicated server
Use the bundled Steam server executable
Keen Games’ dedicated-server installation guidance, dated February 23, 2024, says the dedicated-server executable is bundled with the Steam title. After you purchase and unlock the game, the server appears in Steam’s Tools section. This is the self-hosting path for owners who want to run the server on their own machine or a rented virtual machine.

- Purchase and unlock the Steam version of Enshrouded.
- Open the Steam library and switch the library filter or view to Tools.
- Locate the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool and install it on the machine that will run the world.
- Launch the server tool and follow its current configuration prompts and files. Keep the server software on the same supported game version as the players.
- Leave the server process running when you want the world to be available without the original host’s game client.
- Give friends the connection details through the game’s supported join and invitation flow, and restrict access to people you trust.
The official installation article establishes where to obtain the executable, but it does not establish one universal port-forwarding recipe or a single hardware requirement for every home network. Router menus, firewalls, operating systems, and hosting environments differ. Avoid copying an unverified port number into a guide and assuming it applies to every installation.
Rent a managed server
Keen Games’ multiplayer FAQ names GPortal as an in-game rental partner and says other providers may also be used. A managed host can reduce the work of maintaining an always-on machine, but the service’s actual terms are provider-specific. Confirm the available player slots, region, recurring price, backup controls, administrative access, update procedure, mod support, and refund rules before committing. The game’s cross-play status remains unchanged regardless of which provider you select.
How to join a friend’s Enshrouded game
For a normal hosted session, the host should start the world and send an invitation through the game’s supported Steam integration. Keen Games’ network troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends inviting friends through the Steam Friend list when they cannot find or join a hosted game.

- Confirm that everyone owns a compatible version and is using the same current game update.
- Have the host launch the intended world and make the online session available.
- Open the Steam Friend list and send the invitation to the people who should join.
- Accept the invitation from Steam, then allow Enshrouded to open or join the session.
- If the invitation fails, close and restart the game and Steam before changing network settings; this removes stale session and authentication state.
A dedicated server follows the same compatibility principle, but the server must be running and reachable before players attempt to connect. Keep the server’s address or listing information private if the world is intended for friends only.
Enshrouded multiplayer troubleshooting
Friends cannot see the hosted world
- Use a Steam Friend-list invitation rather than relying only on an in-game browser; this is Keen Games’ published recommendation for hosted-game discovery problems.
- Check that the host has actually started the world and that the session has not ended or been paused by closing the host’s game.
- Verify that all players are on the same game version and compatible platform edition.
- Restart Steam and Enshrouded on both sides, then send a fresh invitation.
The invitation arrives but joining fails
Keen Games says current multiplayer networking uses IPv4. Ensure the host and players can reach the session over IPv4 rather than assuming an IPv6-only path will work. Check local firewall or security software for blocked Enshrouded or Steam traffic, and test again after allowing the applications through the operating system’s network prompt.
Do not treat a particular port-forwarding value as a universal fix. The official troubleshooting guidance points players to the dedicated-server section for hosting issues, while the correct router and firewall steps depend on the host’s network equipment and service provider. If self-hosting, document any change you make so it can be reversed safely.

- Confirm that the dedicated-server process is still running and that the machine has not entered sleep mode.
- Check whether the server or game received an update that requires a restart.
- Review the host machine’s firewall, router status, and IPv4 connectivity.
- For a rental, use the provider’s console and status page, then contact its support team if the service itself is unavailable.
Do Early Access owners need to buy Enshrouded again for 1.0?
No for the PC version. Keen Games’ October 13, 2026 launch FAQ says owners of the Early Access PC version do not need to purchase the game again for 1.0. It also says Early Access saves can be used after conversion to the newer save format.
Rank #3
Back up important saves before conversion, especially if a group shares a world or uses a dedicated server. The statement applies to the PC ownership transition described by Keen Games; it does not create cross-platform entitlement or allow a PC purchase to grant a separate console copy.
What to check before organizing a group
- Platform: confirm that every player is on a compatible platform. Cross-platform play was not available at 1.0.
- Schedule: choose ordinary hosting if everyone usually plays together; choose a dedicated server if the world must remain available between sessions.
- Group size: plan for the official recommendation of up to 16 players rather than assuming a larger number is supported.
- World ownership: decide who controls saves, invitations, server credentials, and backups.
- Network: make sure the host has working IPv4 connectivity and that Steam and Enshrouded are allowed through local security controls.
- Server terms: for a rental, verify current price, region, slots, backups, support, and update behavior directly with the provider.
Enshrouded multiplayer FAQ
Can PC and PlayStation players play together?
No, not at the 1.0 launch. Keen Games says cross-platform play was unavailable at launch and is being worked on without an estimated release date.
Can I play Enshrouded offline?
Yes. Keen Games’ official FAQ says solo and offline play are supported, in addition to online co-op.
Can I host a world while I am offline?
Not with a normal host session: the host must start that session. A dedicated server can remain available while the original host is offline.
Is a dedicated server required for 16 players?
No requirement is stated. Keen Games describes online co-op and recommends groups of up to 16; dedicated hosting is an optional way to keep the world running independently of one player’s game session.
Does renting a server add cross-play?
No. Hosting changes availability and administration, not platform compatibility. Cross-play was unavailable at 1.0.
Where do I get the self-hosted server software?
After purchasing and unlocking the Steam title, use Steam’s Tools section to install the bundled Enshrouded dedicated-server executable.
