The altar becomes your permanent base anchor: it defines a protected building area, keeps Shroud out of that area, provides fast travel and heat, and is where you perform both local altar upgrades and global Flame upgrades.
The two progression tracks are easy to confuse. Altar Level affects only the build cube around one altar. Flame Level is shared by your world and character progression; it improves attributes and Shroud survival, increases the number of bases and water sources you may maintain, opens regions, and unlocks higher crafting tiers.

What a Flame Altar does
A Flame Altar is more than a respawn or travel marker. Once placed, it establishes a permanent Flame-protected area in which you can build. The protected zone keeps the Shroud clear, lets you use the altar as a fast-travel destination, and supplies the heat needed for survival in dangerous areas. The altar interface also contains the actions for expanding that specific base and for strengthening the world’s Flame.
Flame protection has a practical environmental consequence: the altar’s in-game action text says it “will remove all simulated water currently within this Flame-protected area.” Plan pools, channels and decorative water features before activating the protection, and do not assume water placed inside the zone will remain after the action.

You can craft and place more altars as your global Flame progression permits. Each altar has its own construction boundary, while the global Flame level determines how many altars your world can support.
How to craft and place your first altar
- Accept “Claim a Spot For Your Base.” The recipe becomes available after this quest step.
- Open Manual Crafting. This is the character’s basic crafting menu, not a workshop recipe.
- Provide five stone. Any stone units satisfy the recipe; no special regional stone is required.
- Craft the Flame Altar and place it. Choose a location you intend to develop, because its protection, travel point and construction cube are tied to that placement.
- Use the altar interface. From the altar you can view the local build-area upgrade, the “Strengthen the Flame” global upgrade, fast travel and other base controls.
The initial altar creates a 40×40×40 build cube. That cube is the volume in which the game permits construction, not necessarily the visible radius of every effect. If you plan a tall workshop, a deep cellar or large exterior walls, reserve enough vertical and horizontal space before committing to a compact location.
Altar Level and Flame Level: the difference
Think of Altar Level as a property of one plot and Flame Level as the progression of the entire save. Spending Shroud materials on a plot does not make your character stronger, and spending regional sacrifice materials at the Flame does not enlarge a particular building cube.

These are construction-space purchases, not world-level milestones. If you operate several bases, upgrading one does not enlarge the others. The Official Enshrouded Wiki’s 2026 progression information lists the maximum cube as 160×160×160 through these altar-specific upgrades.
Global Flame strengthening
Select Strengthen the Flame at any altar to spend the shared progression bundle. The published progression table covers Flame Levels 1 through 11, which means ten global strengthening steps. Every step uses regional materials and Sparks, includes a corresponding boss trophy, and may include a survivor requirement. From Flame Level 2 onward, each completed level grants an attribute point. Higher levels also extend the maximum time you can remain in the Shroud, increase the permitted number of Flame Altars and water sources, and open the next relevant region or Shroud passage.

The exact boss trophy and any survivor condition matter as much as the raw materials. If the Strengthen the Flame button is unavailable, inspect every requirement in the altar screen rather than assuming you are short on ore: a missing trophy or unfulfilled survivor condition can block the upgrade even when the inventory looks well stocked.
The practical Flame-upgrade loop
Global progression is designed as a repeatable expedition cycle. Use this order to avoid carrying incomplete objectives back and forth:

- Read the next Flame requirement at the altar. Record the regional materials, Spark count, boss trophy and any survivor condition shown for the next level.
- Open the next accessible region. Travel through the currently available passage or Shroud route and note which resources are local to that area.
- Recruit or satisfy the required survivor. Survivors are not just settlement residents; some Flame steps explicitly require one before the altar will accept the offering.
- Gather the regional bundle. Collect the listed plants, ores, monster drops, wood products and alchemical materials in the quantities required. Keep the items in storage near an altar so a later death does not force a second expedition.
- Defeat the associated boss. The trophy is a separate requirement from ordinary drops. Confirm that the correct trophy appears in your inventory after the encounter.
- Return to any Flame Altar and strengthen the Flame. Deposit the complete bundle and activate the upgrade. Because the Flame is global, you do not need to return to the altar where you began the expedition.
- Use the new access immediately. Check the map for the newly opened region or passage, then review crafting stations and recipes for items that became available with the new tier.
This loop explains why a single missing component can stall apparent progression. Exploration supplies the region-specific ingredients, survivors unlock services and conditions, bosses provide trophies, and the altar converts the complete set into a permanent world upgrade.
How Flame progression affects crafting
Flame Level is one part of crafting progression, not the only one. Recipes can expand through exploration, recruited survivors, workshops and Flame upgrades. A higher Flame may therefore reveal a tier while a workshop or survivor is still needed to manufacture its items.

When a new recipe does not appear, check these dependencies in order:
- Flame requirement: verify that the global level has actually been strengthened, rather than only enlarging an altar.
- Survivor requirement: confirm that the relevant survivor has been rescued and is available at your settlement.
- Workshop requirement: inspect the required crafting station and its own construction recipe.
- Exploration requirement: look for a blueprint, resource or location that must be discovered before the recipe is learned.
Keen Games’ official 2026 update announcement adds a current version qualification: before entering Cinder’s Cradle, the next Flame Level is waiting to be unlocked, and that level raises the maximum number of Flame Altars to 15. The same announcement describes a new crafting tier containing equipment, tools, food and other consumables, arrows and spells. Armor sets for the following crafting tier unlock automatically when the Flame is upgraded. If your game version predates that update, the stated Cinder’s Cradle cap and recipe tier may not yet be present.

Planning bases around altar limits
Choose the cube before decorating
The 40×40×40 starting cube is sufficient for a small shelter, but large settlements benefit from placing the altar near the center of the intended footprint. Upgrading later expands the cube around that altar; it does not let you move the center without establishing a different base. Measure the planned footprint in all three dimensions, especially if you intend to build towers, bridges or underground rooms.
Separate construction upgrades from Flame materials
Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexuses are reserved for local cube expansions. Regional bundles, Sparks and trophies belong to the global Strengthen the Flame action. Keep two storage categories so that a building project does not consume a material you were saving for the next world tier.
Budget altar and water-source capacity
The global Flame level controls how many Flame Altars and water sources may exist. Additional bases are therefore a world-progression decision, not simply a matter of collecting stone. Before establishing an outpost, check the current capacity in the altar interface; if the limit is reached, strengthen the Flame first or consolidate an unused site.
Common problems and fixes
“I crafted an altar, but my Shroud time did not increase.”
You upgraded the local altar or merely placed a new one. Only Strengthen the Flame changes the shared Shroud-time limit and grants the level-based attribute point.
“My build area is too small after placing the altar.”
Open that altar’s local upgrade menu and purchase the next cube size with the required Shroud Core or Shroud Nexus. A different altar’s upgrade cannot enlarge this plot.
“The Flame upgrade is locked even though I have the materials.”
Read the full requirement list. Confirm the exact Spark count, the regional materials, the corresponding boss trophy and any survivor condition. A normal boss drop is not a substitute for the named trophy.
“A recipe still does not appear after raising the Flame.”
Check the survivor, workshop and exploration conditions. Flame progression can expose a new tier while the recipe remains gated by a station, character or discovery requirement.
“Water disappeared from my base.”
The altar’s protection action removes simulated water within the Flame-protected area. Restore the feature outside the protected boundary or recreate it after confirming how the current game version handles that water type.
