ENS vs Unstoppable Domains: Which Web3 Name Service Is Better for You?

Neither service is universally better. Choose ENS when you specifically want a .eth name, ENS’s documented resolution model, or a supported way to attach an existing DNS domain to ENS. Choose Unstoppable Domains when the exact extension you need is in its naming system and the applications you use support that extension. Before paying, compare the name’s total cost over your ownership period, renewal and expiry rules, resolution architecture, records, and actual wallet or application compatibility.

The short answer

ENS and Unstoppable Domains solve a similar problem—replacing long blockchain addresses or content identifiers with human-readable names—but they do not offer the same namespace, lifecycle, or compatibility. ENS is centered on .eth names and Ethereum-based resolution. Unstoppable Domains provides a collection of extensions and a records model intended for compatible wallets, exchanges, marketplaces, and other applications.

Decision factor ENS Unstoppable Domains
Name choice .eth names, plus documented configurations that can use an existing DNS domain Several documented extensions, including .x, .polygon, .nft, .crypto, .blockchain, .bitcoin, .dao, .888, and .wallet
Primary resolution model Resolution begins on Ethereum Mainnet or a testnet; Layer 2 and off-chain methods can change the trust and efficiency trade-off Its Resolution Service API reads metadata and records from supported naming systems and caches blockchain events
Typical records Address and other ENS records, with documented DNS integrations in supported setups Cryptocurrency addresses, chat IDs, IPFS hashes, and other records defined by compatible applications
Best first question “Do I need a .eth name or ENS-compatible DNS setup?” “Does the precise extension I want resolve in the wallet or application I will actually use?”

Documentation or an API list is not proof that every consumer wallet, browser, exchange, or marketplace resolves every extension. Compatibility must be checked at the point where you intend to use the name.

What ENS provides

.eth names and Ethereum resolution

ENS names are registered and renewed as annual .eth registrations. ENS documentation describes resolution beginning on Ethereum Mainnet or a testnet. A resolver connects a readable name to records such as blockchain addresses or other supported data, so an application can look up the name instead of displaying a hexadecimal address.

The architecture can also use Layer 2 or off-chain resolution to reduce main-chain work. That can improve efficiency and reduce congestion, but moving part of resolution away from the main chain introduces reliance on external systems. The relevant question is not whether off-chain resolution is automatically good or bad; it is whether the trust assumptions and supported resolver path fit your use case.

Using a DNS name with ENS

ENS Support documents configurations in which an already-owned conventional DNS domain can be used as an ENS name. ENS does not sell DNS domains. Depending on the configuration and intended records, requirements can include DNSSEC and particular DNS records. ENS also distinguishes off-chain, gasless use with narrower capabilities from other configurations. A domain registrar or hosting setup that works for ordinary websites is therefore not automatically compatible with every ENS feature.

What Unstoppable Domains provides

A family of extensions rather than one namespace

Unstoppable Domains’ Resolution Service API documentation lists UNS and CNS extensions such as .x, .polygon, .nft, .crypto, .blockchain, .bitcoin, .dao, .888, and .wallet, along with additional supported naming systems and ENS .eth. The service is described as resolving domain metadata and records across those supported systems and caching blockchain events.

That list defines the API’s stated scope, not universal consumer support. A wallet may support one extension but not another; a marketplace may read a particular record type while ignoring others; and a browser may treat a name as ordinary text unless it has an integrated resolver. Verify the exact extension and record type in each application that matters to you.

CNS records and compatible integrations

Unstoppable Domains’ CNS architecture documentation describes records including cryptocurrency addresses, chat IDs, and IPFS hashes. The standard is intended to let compatible wallets, exchanges, and marketplaces manage or read those records. “Compatible” is the operative qualification: the record exists in the naming system, but an application still needs to implement the relevant resolution and record handling.

ENS registration and renewal cost

ENS Support’s current pricing page lists these annual fees for .eth names:

Name length Annual registration fee Annual renewal fee
Five or more characters $5 per year $5 per year
Four characters $160 per year $160 per year
Three characters $640 per year $640 per year

These are the stated dollar fees; payment is made in ETH on Ethereum Mainnet. The ETH amount shown by the app changes with the exchange rate, while the dollar-denominated fee is fixed on the pricing page. Ethereum gas is additional and can vary with network conditions.

The ENS app adds an approximately 10% ETH buffer to its gas estimate to allow for a spike during the transaction. ENS Support says unused ETH from that buffer is returned in the same transaction. Treat the displayed ETH amount, gas estimate, and buffer as a live quote rather than a permanent total; check the app immediately before registration or renewal.

For a realistic comparison, calculate the ENS fee for the exact character length and number of years, then add likely transaction costs. Do not compare a short, premium-length .eth name with an Unstoppable name using only a headline purchase price.

Unstoppable Domains lifecycle, renewal, and expiry

Unstoppable Domains’ Support article, modified August 26, 2026, describes the following policy. Recheck the current terms for the specific name before relying on them, because expiry rules and fees can change.

Stage Policy described by Support Practical consequence
First 30 days after expiration Grace period to renew at the normal price DNS records and forwarding configurations are removed, and Unstoppable nameservers are applied
Starting on day 30 Seven-day auction Auction activity can prevent ordinary renewal or transfer
After the seven-day auction Three-day closeout auction if the name remains unsold The name remains in an auction process rather than ordinary renewal
After closeout Thirty-day redemption period with a higher redemption fee Recovery may still be possible, but at a higher cost and under the stated redemption terms

This is why describing an Unstoppable name simply as “forever” is incomplete. The practical result depends on keeping the name current, the specific extension and terms, and whether an auction or redemption stage has begun. Record removal during the grace period can also affect website forwarding or other DNS-dependent functions even if the name itself has not yet entered an auction.

Resolution and trust: what changes between the systems

ENS mainnet, Layer 2, and off-chain paths

ENS’s documented starting point is Ethereum Mainnet or a testnet. A mainnet-based path gives applications a clear on-chain source for the relevant records, but transactions and updates can incur Ethereum gas. Layer 2 and off-chain approaches can reduce main-chain congestion and improve efficiency. Their trade-off is that applications may rely on external infrastructure or proofs rather than querying the main chain directly.

Ask which resolver path your wallet or application uses, whether it supports the records you need, and what happens if the external service is unavailable. “On-chain” and “off-chain” are architectural descriptions, not a complete security verdict.

Unstoppable’s Resolution Service API

The Resolution Service API is documented as a way to resolve metadata and records for supported naming services while caching blockchain events. This can give integrators one interface across several extensions. It does not make every extension interchangeable, and it does not require every consumer application to use that API.

For a user, the meaningful test is application behavior: enter the exact name in the wallet, exchange, marketplace, browser, or profile service you plan to use and confirm that it resolves to the intended address or record. If the application’s documentation only says it supports a general API or “Web3 domains,” ask whether your precise extension is included.

Which service fits common jobs?

Receiving cryptocurrency

If your contacts already recognize .eth and the wallets they use resolve ENS names, ENS is the direct fit. If your chosen wallet explicitly supports an Unstoppable extension, that extension can serve the same address-alias role. Never assume that support for one naming system implies support for another.

Maintaining several blockchain addresses

Both models can store address records, but the useful comparison is the record schema implemented by the application. Confirm which chains and address types the receiving wallet can read, whether it displays one default address or chain-specific records, and how an update is authenticated.

Publishing an IPFS or decentralized-content address

Unstoppable’s CNS documentation explicitly includes IPFS hashes among its record types. ENS can also carry records, but your application must support the relevant ENS record and content-resolution path. Test the exact client before moving a production content link.

Using a conventional website domain

ENS is the relevant option when the goal is to use an existing DNS domain in a supported ENS configuration. You still need to meet the DNSSEC or record requirements that apply to that setup, and gasless off-chain configurations may have narrower capabilities. Unstoppable Domains should be evaluated as a separate naming and resolution system, not as a substitute for every conventional registrar or hosting function.

A compatibility check you should perform before buying

  1. List the destinations. Write down every wallet, exchange, marketplace, browser, profile service, or payment tool where the name must work.
  2. Record the exact extension. “Web3-domain support” is too broad. Note whether the application names .eth, .crypto, .wallet, or the precise extension you plan to purchase.
  3. Check the application’s current documentation and interface. Look for a supported-extension list and a stated record type, not merely a reference to an API or naming service.
  4. Test resolution before committing funds when possible. Enter an existing example name or use the application’s lookup feature. Confirm the displayed address, chain, and other records.
  5. Check update behavior. Find out how an address change is propagated, whether the application caches results, and how quickly a changed record becomes visible.
  6. Price the full ownership period. For ENS, include the length-based annual fee, the number of years, and Ethereum gas. For Unstoppable Domains, include the specific name’s purchase or renewal terms and the cost of recovering it after expiry.
  7. Read the expiry consequences. Decide whether you can monitor renewals and tolerate record removal, auctions, or a higher redemption fee.

How to compare total cost fairly

Start with the period you actually expect to own the name—one year, five years, or longer. An ENS name of five or more characters has a stated $5 annual fee, while four- and three-character names have substantially higher annual fees. Multiply the applicable rate by the planned years and add a variable Ethereum Mainnet gas allowance for each registration or renewal transaction.

For Unstoppable Domains, do not infer a universal price from one extension or sale. Check the exact name’s current purchase price, whether renewal applies, what happens at expiry, and any redemption or auction charges. A lower initial price can be less attractive if the name is business-critical and a missed renewal could remove records or force an auction.

Also separate ownership cost from integration cost. A name can be inexpensive to hold yet unusable in the wallet your customers use. Conversely, a name that resolves in one application may require a different record setup elsewhere.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every extension works everywhere: verify the extension in each target application.
  • Calling a name “permanent” without reading the policy: track renewal dates and understand grace, auction, closeout, and redemption stages.
  • Ignoring gas: ENS’s stated annual fee does not include Ethereum Mainnet transaction costs.
  • Confusing API scope with user compatibility: an integrator-facing resolution API does not force wallets or browsers to implement every listed extension.
  • Assuming a DNS setup automatically qualifies for ENS: check DNSSEC, record, and configuration requirements for the exact use case.
  • Changing a record without checking caches: applications may cache blockchain events or resolved metadata, so confirm when an update becomes visible.
  • Comparing governance without evidence: available documentation does not establish a fully comparable, current governance analysis across both services.

A practical decision framework

Choose ENS when these conditions are true

  • You specifically want a .eth identity.
  • Your important wallets and applications already document ENS resolution.
  • You want to investigate a documented ENS configuration for an existing DNS domain.
  • You understand the annual, length-based fee and are prepared to pay Ethereum Mainnet gas.
  • You prefer to evaluate the resolver path, including any Layer 2 or off-chain trust assumptions, in ENS’s documentation.

Choose Unstoppable Domains when these conditions are true

  • The exact extension you want is documented and supported by your target applications.
  • You need records such as addresses, chat identifiers, or IPFS hashes handled through compatible CNS integrations.
  • You have checked the specific name’s purchase, renewal, expiry, auction, and redemption terms.
  • You value a multi-extension resolution interface but have confirmed that your applications implement the extension you selected.

Wait and verify when neither is clearly right

Pause the purchase if your primary wallet does not name the extension, if you cannot determine how a record update propagates, or if the expiry policy creates unacceptable operational risk. A readable name that cannot be resolved where you need it is not a successful alias.

What “better” means in this comparison

There is no reliable single ranking based on the available evidence. ENS has a clear .eth-centered pricing structure and documented DNS and resolution paths. Unstoppable Domains offers multiple extensions and a records model exposed through a documented resolution service. The better choice is the one that matches your intended namespace, records, trust model, budget over the full holding period, and real application support.

Make the final decision only after checking the live price or renewal terms and testing the precise extension in the applications that will receive or display it.
