Then check the name’s current resolver, confirm the requested record exists for the correct chain, and test another ENS-capable client. A resolver migration, an app that lacks ENSv2 support, or blocked CCIP-Read requests can each produce a similar symptom.
Do not immediately rewrite records. An upgrade can change the resolver pointer, and a write sent to the previous resolver may succeed while every reader continues using the new one.

Start by defining what “not resolving” means
Write down the exact name, chain, application or library, and result you see. Resolution failures fall into different paths, so a broken reverse lookup does not prove that the name’s forward records are broken.
| Observed symptom | Resolution path | First place to investigate |
|---|---|---|
example.eth does not return an address |
Forward name-to-address | The name’s current resolver and its address record |
| A text, content, or other record is missing | Forward name-to-record | The resolver that currently serves the name and the requested record |
| An address no longer displays its primary ENS name | Reverse address-to-name | The reverse record, followed by a forward verification |
| One application fails while another resolves the same name | Client-dependent forward or reverse lookup | ENSv2 support and CCIP-Read handling in the failing environment |
Also note when the failure began. A change immediately after a resolver migration or record write points toward name state. A failure that appeared with an app release points toward library compatibility. A failure limited to a browser or hosted app can indicate that CCIP-Read HTTP requests are being blocked.

How forward ENS resolution works
For a forward lookup, a client first finds the resolver currently associated with the name in the ENS registry. It then asks that resolver for the requested address, text, content, or other record. The resolver—not an old address remembered by your code or wallet—is the source of the value returned to readers. The sequence is described in the ENS resolution guide.
- Convert the name into the identifier used by the registry.
- Read the registry entry to obtain the resolver pointer currently associated with that name.
- Query that resolver for the specific record and coin type the client requested.
- Interpret the returned value, including any offchain lookup instruction, and display it only if the client supports that flow.
This distinction matters after an upgrade. If the pointer changed, a write transaction sent to the previous resolver can still be accepted by that contract. The transaction may therefore look successful in a wallet while clients read a different resolver and continue showing an older value—or no value at all.
Step-by-step forward-resolution repair
1. Re-read the resolver pointer
Query the ENS registry for the name’s resolver immediately before inspecting or changing a record. Do not rely on a resolver address cached before the upgrade, copied from an earlier deployment, or hardcoded in application code.
Compare the returned pointer with the contract that received the recent write. If they differ, the write targeted a resolver the name no longer uses. Read the desired record through the newly returned resolver before making another transaction. ENS’s app-developer guidance states the risk directly: “A name’s resolver pointer can change at any time, and writing to a resolver a name no longer uses silently updates records nobody reads.” See ENS’s app-developer guide.

2. Inspect the exact record being requested
A resolver can contain several independent records. Check the address, text key, content hash, or other record that the failing client actually requests. Seeing one record does not establish that another exists.
For a name managed in ENS Manager, check whether it points to a supported public resolver and whether the intended record is present there. ENS documents the editable-name requirements for the public resolver. If the resolver or record is not editable as expected, verify that the account has the relevant permissions before submitting more writes. Repeated transactions against an unverified contract do not repair the pointer or grant permission.
3. Confirm that an address record exists
Registration and record configuration are separate actions. A newly registered name can legitimately return null when no address record has been set. The ENSv2 troubleshooting guidance lists “no address record set yet” as a cause of a null result; registration alone is not proof that an address is configured.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the intended network or coin type, not merely whether some address is stored. ENS supports chain-specific addresses, so a lookup for one chain can fail when only another chain’s address has been set. A client requesting a particular coin type will not substitute an address stored for a different one.

4. Read again from a fresh client
After confirming the pointer and record, perform a new read in a second current ENS-capable client or library. This separates name state from a stale cache or unsupported implementation. Use the same name, chain, and record in both tests so that a different result is meaningful.
When only one app or library fails
If a second client resolves the name but the upgraded app does not, the name is less likely to be the problem. Check the failing environment’s ENSv2 support level and update its ENS library according to the maintained support guidance in the ENS app-developer documentation. Libraries that predate ENSv2 support can return null even when the registry and resolver contain valid data.
Application write flows need the same treatment. Resolve the name’s current resolver at runtime, then send the record write to that address. Never keep a resolver address as a permanent constant. A future migration can invalidate it without causing the old contract to reject transactions, which makes this bug especially difficult to spot.
- Log the name, chain, resolver pointer, requested record, and client-library version for a failing request.
- Compare those values with a successful request from a current client.
- Check whether the app interprets a null result as “no record” or as an unsupported resolution path.
- Retest after updating the ENS library, while keeping the registry and resolver queries visible in logs.
Check CCIP-Read for offchain and L2-backed names
Some ENS resolution starts on Ethereum Mainnet but obtains record data from an offchain gateway or another chain. In this CCIP-Read flow, the resolver returns an OffchainLookup error containing instructions for the client to make an HTTP request to a gateway. The client then validates the response and continues resolution. The protocol flow is documented in ENS’s offchain and L2 resolver guide.

A browser or app can therefore fail even when the onchain resolver pointer is correct. Common boundaries to check are:
- The exact client library may not implement CCIP-Read.
- The browser, mobile web view, RPC layer, or security policy may block the gateway’s HTTP request.
- The gateway may be unavailable or return an invalid response.
- The app may treat the initial
OffchainLookuperror as a final failure instead of following the indicated request.
Test the same name in a script or client known to support CCIP-Read and in the failing app. If the script succeeds, inspect the gateway request and response in the app’s network logs. This distinguishes transport or capability problems from an incorrect record. Gateway trust assumptions depend on the resolver implementation: ENS notes that implementations range from trusted models to trustless verification models, so the client must follow the resolver’s specified validation flow rather than accepting arbitrary HTTP data.

Reverse resolution answers a different question: which ENS name, if any, should an address display as its primary name? A correct forward record does not automatically create or update the reverse record.

Verify the returned name forward
Never display a reverse result solely because a reverse record exists. Resolve the returned name forward and compare the result with the original address. ENS’s primary-name guidance requires this check: if the forward address does not match, the client should show the address instead of the name. Follow the verification model described in ENS Primary Names.
- Read the address’s reverse record on the relevant chain.
- Resolve the returned name through its current resolver.
- Request the address for the same chain or coin type used by the reverse record.
- Display the ENS name only when the forward result equals the original address.
Use scope to narrow the cause
| Comparison | What it tells you | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One name fails; other names work | The name’s resolver pointer, record, permission, or chain-specific data is a likely boundary | Re-read that name’s resolver and requested record |
| All names fail in one app; another client works | The failing app may lack ENSv2 or CCIP-Read support, or may block gateway requests | Check library support and network behavior |
| Forward lookup works; primary name is missing | The reverse record or its forward-match check is failing | Inspect reverse state and verify the name forward |
| Name fails on one chain but not another | The requested chain-specific address or reverse record may be absent | Inspect the coin-type record for the failing chain |
| Reads show old data after a successful write | The transaction may have targeted a resolver the name no longer uses | Resolve the current pointer and write through that resolver |
| Scripts work; browser app fails | CCIP-Read HTTP requests may be blocked or unsupported in the app | Inspect OffchainLookup handling and gateway requests |
These comparisons are diagnostic boundaries, not proof of a particular fault. Keep the name, chain, direction, client, and time of failure attached to every test so that a change in one variable is visible.
Recovery playbooks
Resolver migration or contract upgrade
- Read the resolver pointer from the registry.
- Read the desired record through that pointer.
- If the record is absent, confirm the account’s permissions and write to the current resolver.
- Read again from a second client and verify the exact chain-specific value.
If an old transaction succeeded but the value remains unchanged, do not assume the transaction was rolled back. Compare its destination with the current pointer; a successful write to an obsolete resolver is consistent with readers continuing to show the old state.
Newly registered name returns null
- Confirm that registration completed for the intended name and chain.
- Read the current resolver.
- Check whether an address record has actually been set.
- Set the correct coin-type record through the current resolver, then perform a fresh forward lookup.
A null result in this case can be normal until the separate record-setting action is complete.
Only an upgraded application fails
- Resolve the name in a second current client.
- Record the failing app’s ENS library and ENSv2 support level.
- Check whether its environment follows CCIP-Read instructions and permits the indicated HTTP request.
- Update the library or transport handling, then repeat the same lookup and compare the resolver and record values.
Primary name disappeared
- Read the address’s reverse record on the affected chain.
- Resolve the returned name forward.
- Request the chain-specific address and compare it with the original address.
- Show the address, rather than the ENS name, when the comparison fails.
Developer checklist before shipping an upgrade
- Resolve the registry pointer for every write instead of hardcoding a resolver address.
- Keep forward and reverse resolution code paths distinct.
- Request the correct coin type for the chain being displayed.
- Handle a missing address record as a valid null state, not automatically as a network error.
- Support ENSv2-compatible resolution behavior in the library used by the app.
- Handle CCIP-Read’s
OffchainLookupflow when the resolver uses offchain or L2 data. - Allow the required gateway request in the browser, mobile, RPC, or server environment.
- Validate reverse results with a forward lookup before displaying a primary name.
- Log the resolver pointer and requested record so a post-upgrade mismatch can be identified.
Final verification checklist
Before considering the incident fixed, confirm all of the following in the environment that originally failed:
- The registry returns the resolver currently intended for the name.
- The resolver contains the requested record for the requested chain or coin type.
- The account that writes records has the required permissions.
- The client library supports the ENSv2 behavior used by the name.
- Any CCIP-Read request reaches the indicated gateway and is validated correctly.
- A reverse result, if used, resolves forward to the original address.
- A second current client produces the same result.
If these checks disagree, preserve the differing resolver pointer, record value, chain, and client details. That evidence identifies whether the remaining problem is registry state, a record write, client compatibility, or offchain transport rather than treating every post-upgrade failure as a single ENS issue.
