Energy Transfer (ET) and Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) are both large, diversified U.S. midstream limited partnerships, but the latest figures do not produce a single winner. For the second quarter of 2026, ET declared $0.34 per common unit ($1.36 annualized), while EPD declared $0.56 ($2.24 annualized). EPD also reported 1.9× coverage of its second-quarter distribution using operational distributable cash flow (DCF). ET reported strong adjusted DCF growth, but the cited release does not provide a directly comparable coverage ratio.
The useful comparison is therefore broader than the cash amount. You need to examine each partnership’s asset mix, fee and commodity exposure, distribution-growth record, coverage definition, capital requirements, balance sheet, tax reporting and valuation on the same market date. The information below uses the latest second-quarter 2026 releases and 2025 reporting available through October 12, 2026.

The short answer: higher payout at EPD, different exposure at ET
EPD’s declared distribution was higher on a per-unit basis in the second quarter of 2026, and its reported 1.9× operational-DCF coverage provides a clearly documented quarterly cushion. ET’s distribution was lower in dollars per unit, but the partnership reported faster year-over-year growth in second-quarter adjusted EBITDA and adjusted DCF and raised its 2026 EBITDA guidance.

Those facts do not establish that EPD is safer, that ET will grow faster, or that one partnership will deliver a better investment return. The companies classify operations differently, use company-defined non-GAAP measures, and have different unit prices. A distribution amount cannot be converted into a yield without a dated market price, and the available figures do not provide a synchronized ET-versus-EPD valuation or leverage comparison.

What each partnership owns and operates
Energy Transfer’s integrated network
Energy Transfer reports a combination of natural-gas gathering and processing; intrastate and interstate pipelines and storage; crude-oil, NGL and refined-products transportation and terminals; NGL fractionation; and related midstream services. Its operations span several commodities and infrastructure functions rather than a single pipeline corridor.
ET’s own fiscal-year 2025 presentation divides adjusted EBITDA into five reporting categories. The percentages below describe ET’s adjusted EBITDA mix, not revenue, throughput or an independently calculated exposure to commodity prices.

| Midstream | 20% | Gathering, processing and related midstream operations |
| Crude Oil | 18% | Crude transportation, terminals and associated services |
| SUN, USAC & Other | 16% | ET’s combined reporting category for these businesses and other activities |
Because the categories are ET’s own reporting taxonomy, they should not be treated as a standardized industry classification or placed directly beside EPD percentages that were not disclosed on the same basis.
Enterprise Products Partners’ NGL-centered chain
EPD’s filings describe a substantial natural-gas-liquids chain: natural-gas processing; NGL pipelines; fractionation; storage; and marine terminals. The partnership also operates crude-oil, petrochemical and refined-products facilities, pipelines, terminals and related services.
Calling EPD only an “NGL company” misses the rest of its system, while calling ET only a natural-gas or crude-oil operator is equally incomplete. Both partnerships combine gathering, processing, transportation, storage and terminal assets. Their reported segment names and boundaries are not identical, so an apparent percentage advantage can be an accounting-classification difference rather than a true economic difference.

How the second-quarter 2026 distributions compare
Energy Transfer’s declaration
Energy Transfer declared $0.34 per common unit for the second quarter of 2026. The partnership described that as $1.36 annualized, more than 3% above the second-quarter 2025 distribution and its 19th consecutive quarterly increase. Payment was scheduled for August 19, 2026, to common unitholders of record on August 7, 2026.

Enterprise Products Partners’ declaration
Enterprise Products Partners declared $0.56 per common unit for the same quarter, or $2.24 annualized. The declaration was 2.8% above the second quarter of 2025. Payment was scheduled for August 14, 2026, to holders of record on July 31, 2026.
EPD’s larger dollar distribution does not automatically mean a higher yield. Yield requires dividing the distribution by the unit price, and the price must be observed on a specified date. The available information does not provide a same-date yield comparison, so any ranking based on yield would require additional market data.
What the growth percentages do and do not show
ET’s “more than 3%” increase and EPD’s 2.8% increase compare each partnership with its own second-quarter 2025 declaration. They are not total-return figures, do not include unit-price changes and do not establish which partnership will grow distributions faster in the future.
Distribution coverage: the most important measurement caveat
EPD’s disclosed coverage
EPD reported $2.3 billion of operational DCF for the second quarter of 2026 and said that amount provided 1.9× coverage of the partnership’s cash distribution. It retained $1.1 billion of DCF after the declared distributions. Operational DCF is EPD’s stated measure for this calculation; it is not automatically interchangeable with every other partnership’s DCF or cash-flow metric.
EPD also reported a 56% payout ratio for the 12 months ended June 30, 2026. That calculation includes common-unit distributions and common-unit buybacks as a share of adjusted cash flow from operations. It is a trailing, 12-month payout ratio, not the same thing as the 1.9× quarterly operational-DCF coverage figure.

What ET’s release establishes
ET’s second-quarter release reported $2.59 billion of adjusted DCF attributable to partners, up 32% from the second quarter of 2025. The cited material does not include a coverage ratio calculated using the same period, cash-flow definition and distribution denominator as EPD’s 1.9× figure.
It would be misleading to divide unlike figures and label the result an ET-versus-EPD coverage comparison. ET’s adjusted DCF and EPD’s operational DCF are company-defined non-GAAP measures. Before comparing coverage, verify the exact definitions, period, treatment of preferred interests and buybacks, and whether the numerator is available to common unitholders.
Operating momentum and guidance
Energy Transfer’s second-quarter results
ET reported $5.07 billion of adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter of 2026, a 31% year-over-year increase. Adjusted DCF attributable to partners reached $2.59 billion, up 32%. These are ET-defined non-GAAP measures, so the growth rates describe changes in ET’s chosen adjustments rather than a standardized accounting metric.
ET also raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $18.8 billion–$19.1 billion in its August 4, 2026 second-quarter results release. An earlier year-end presentation had projected $17.45 billion–$17.85 billion; that earlier range was superseded by the August update. Guidance is forward-looking and is not an assurance that distributions will rise by the same percentage.
The year-end presentation characterized ET’s expected 2026 adjusted EBITDA breakout as approximately 90% fee-based, 5%–10% commodity-sensitive and 0%–5% spread-based, using the futures assumptions available when that presentation was prepared. Those percentages are an outlook snapshot, not a permanent description of the business.
Enterprise’s second-quarter results
EPD reported record second-quarter 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $2.8 billion, up 17% year over year, and operational DCF of $2.3 billion, up 21%. The partnership’s chief executive officer, A. J. “Jim” Teague, said in the July 30, 2026 release: “Enterprise reported strong volumes, earnings and cash flow for the second quarter of 2026.”

ET’s and EPD’s EBITDA and DCF figures differ in scale, scope and definition. A larger EBITDA number does not by itself indicate a higher return, better coverage or lower risk because the partnerships have different asset bases, ownership structures and unit counts.

A practical framework for comparing ET and EPD
1. Identify the exposure you want
Start with the infrastructure rather than the distribution headline. ET’s disclosed mix gives substantial weight to NGL and refined products, natural-gas pipelines and storage, midstream, crude oil, and SUN, USAC & Other. EPD’s described system emphasizes the NGL chain while also covering crude, petrochemicals, refined products and related terminals.
Ask whether the exposure fits your view of U.S. production, export demand, fractionation capacity, storage, processing or refined-products logistics. Do not assume that two assets carrying the same commodity label have the same contract structure or geographic risk.
2. Compare distributions for the same quarter
Use declared per-unit amounts for the same period, then show the annualized arithmetic separately. For Q2 2026, that produces $0.34 versus $0.56 per common unit and $1.36 versus $2.24 annualized. Keep the declaration date, record date and payment date attached to the figures when timing matters.
3. Verify the coverage methodology
Coverage is meaningful only when the numerator and denominator match. Check whether DCF is operational, adjusted, attributable to common partners or calculated after other claims. Check whether buybacks are included, whether the figure is quarterly or trailing, and whether the distribution is declared or paid.

A distribution increase is a growth observation. Yield is a market-price calculation. To compare yield, record ET’s and EPD’s unit prices at the same close, use the same annualization convention and state whether the result uses the latest declaration or a trailing four-quarter total. No such synchronized valuation is established by the figures above.

5. Examine capital needs and leverage separately
Midstream partnerships can generate substantial cash while still committing capital to expansions, maintenance, acquisitions or debt reduction. The information summarized here does not calculate a comparable leverage ratio or project-capital burden for ET and EPD. Use each partnership’s current filing, define the debt and EBITDA periods, and avoid treating an undisclosed comparison as evidence that one balance sheet is stronger.
Tax reporting for common unitholders
Both ET and EPD are publicly traded limited partnerships rather than ordinary corporations. Partnership ownership can involve Form K-1 reporting and tax items that differ from a conventional corporate-dividend statement. Energy Transfer’s investor materials advertise 2025 K-1 tax packages.
Your tax result depends on your account type, residence, basis, allocations and other personal facts. Review the current K-1 and tax documents supplied for your units, and consult a qualified tax professional for individual advice. The distribution amounts in this comparison do not predict an investor’s after-tax cash flow.
Risks and limitations that a distribution table cannot show
- Commodity and volume sensitivity: Fee arrangements can reduce direct price exposure, but throughput, processing margins, storage conditions and contract renewals still matter.
- Project execution: New infrastructure can require large capital outlays and may face permitting, construction, financing or timing risks.
- Counterparty and concentration risk: The economic value of a contract depends on the customer, term, credit quality and alternative capacity.
- Interest-rate and financing risk: Debt costs and access to capital can affect cash available after operating expenses and investment.
- Distribution policy: A history of increases does not guarantee future increases or prevent a reduction if conditions change.
- Non-GAAP comparability: Adjusted EBITDA, adjusted DCF and operational DCF are issuer-defined measures with potentially different adjustments.
- Market-price risk: A higher cash distribution can coincide with a higher unit price, a lower yield or a larger price decline.
- Tax complexity: K-1 allocations and basis adjustments can make after-tax outcomes differ materially between investors.
Which partnership fits which comparison objective?
| If your primary question is… | What the available evidence says | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Which declared more cash per common unit in Q2 2026? | EPD, at $0.56 versus ET’s $0.34 | Same-date yield after incorporating each unit price |
| Which disclosed a quarterly coverage ratio? | EPD reported 1.9× operational-DCF coverage | A directly comparable ET ratio using matching definitions |
| Which showed faster Q2 2026 EBITDA growth? | ET’s adjusted EBITDA rose 31%; EPD’s adjusted EBITDA rose 17% | Whether adjustments, asset changes and base effects make the growth rates economically comparable |
| Which has the clearer published segment mix? | ET supplied FY 2025 adjusted-EBITDA percentages | An EPD percentage breakdown on the same classification basis |
| Which has lower leverage or capital risk? | Not established by the figures in this comparison | Current filings, debt metrics, maturities, capital spending and project commitments |
Bottom line
For Q2 2026, EPD offered the larger declared distribution per common unit and disclosed 1.9× operational-DCF coverage, while ET reported a larger year-over-year increase in adjusted EBITDA and adjusted DCF and raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $18.8 billion–$19.1 billion. ET’s 19th consecutive quarterly increase and EPD’s 2.8% year-over-year increase show distribution growth, but neither history guarantees the next declaration.
The disciplined choice is to match the partnership’s business mix and risk profile to your objective, then verify same-date yield, leverage, capital requirements and tax consequences. Do not treat EPD’s 1.9× metric as an ET comparison, do not call annualized run rates forecasts, and do not infer an investment winner from per-unit payout alone.
