Energy Funds vs. Technology Funds: How Their Risks and Returns Differ

Neither energy funds nor technology funds is consistently the better performer. Both are concentrated equity investments, so each can move more sharply when events affect its sector. Energy funds are particularly exposed to fuel prices, supply and demand, geopolitics, regulation and heavy capital requirements. Technology funds are more exposed to product cycles, obsolescence, competition, intellectual-property issues, regulation and changing growth rates. The useful comparison is fund-specific: strategy, holdings, concentration, costs and matched-period performance matter more than the sector label alone.

What makes a sector fund different from a diversified fund?

A sector fund invests most of its assets in companies connected to one part of the economy instead of spreading exposure across many industries. That concentration can make the fund more responsive to favorable developments in the target sector, but it also increases sensitivity to adverse developments there. It does not remove ordinary stock-market risk, interest-rate risk, recession risk or the possibility of losing money.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The Select Sector SPDR Trust prospectus expresses the point directly for both categories. Its energy-sector disclosure says that concentration means the fund will be more affected by energy-sector performance than a more diversified fund. The technology-sector disclosure uses the same warning for technology. These are prospectus risk disclosures, not predictions that either sector will outperform or underperform.

“Energy fund” and “technology fund” also describe broad groups rather than single strategies. A fund tracking a diversified sector index can behave very differently from an actively managed infrastructure fund, a thematic fund focused on a narrow technology, or a leveraged product. Before comparing returns, identify what each fund actually owns and how it obtains exposure.

Energy funds: the main sources of risk

Commodity prices and physical market balance

Energy-company revenue and cash flow can be influenced by the prices of oil, natural gas, electricity and other fuels. Those prices respond to supply and demand, inventories, weather, transportation constraints and production decisions. A fund may therefore experience large changes even when its individual holdings execute their business plans well.

The Select Sector SPDR Trust prospectus warns that energy issuers can be affected by fluctuations in energy prices and by the supply and demand for energy fuels. It also describes volatility in energy-related commodity markets. This exposure is indirect for many shareholders: the fund generally owns companies rather than barrels of oil or units of gas, but the companies’ earnings and valuations can still reflect commodity conditions.

Geopolitics, sanctions and regulation

Energy production and infrastructure often cross borders and depend on permits, pipelines, terminals, grids and other regulated assets. Wars, sanctions, export restrictions, changes in environmental rules and disputes over land or water can alter costs, available markets or operating schedules. These events may affect an entire group of holdings at once, which is one reason sector concentration matters.

Capital intensity and financing

Energy businesses may need substantial spending and debt to maintain or expand reserves and infrastructure. When financing becomes more expensive or lenders become more cautious, companies can defer projects, reduce acquisitions or cut distributions. A fund holding companies with different balance sheets will not have a single uniform response, so leverage and project stage belong in the fund-level review.

Infrastructure-specific risks

An infrastructure-oriented strategy can have a risk profile that is not captured by a broad energy index. An SEC-filed disclosure for the Cohen & Steers Future of Energy Active ETF identifies changes in commodity volumes, geopolitical events including war and sanctions, reduced construction and acquisition activity, demand changes, resource depletion and regulation. It also notes that energy-market volatility can affect companies’ ability to finance capital expenditures and acquisitions or to maintain distributions.

Those factors illustrate a strategy-specific case, not a rule for every energy fund. A fund concentrated in pipelines, utilities, equipment makers, exploration companies or renewable infrastructure will have different revenue contracts, financing needs and sensitivity to commodity prices.

Technology funds: the main sources of risk

Rapid product cycles and obsolescence

Technology companies compete in markets where a new processor, software platform, device, security vulnerability or business model can change demand quickly. Product cycles can shorten the useful life of inventory and research spending. A company that misses a transition may lose market share before a fund manager can reduce the position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Competition and intellectual property

Technology businesses often face intense domestic and international competition. Their value may depend on patents, licenses, proprietary data, software code, trade secrets or access to specialized suppliers. Litigation, licensing disputes, reverse engineering or a rival’s technical breakthrough can reduce expected cash flows. A diversified technology fund spreads this risk across holdings, but it does not eliminate sector-wide competitive pressure.

Regulation and cross-border exposure

Privacy, cybersecurity, artificial-intelligence governance, antitrust, content rules, export controls and data-localization requirements can change the economics of technology products. Foreign revenue also introduces currency, trade and political risks. The timing and substance of regulatory changes are difficult to forecast, and a rule aimed at one business model can affect several companies in a fund at once.

Unpredictable growth rates

Technology valuations often reflect expectations for future growth. If sales, margins or user expansion slow, prices can fall even when a company remains profitable. SEC-filed technology-fund disclosures identify unpredictable changes in growth rates as a risk. The same disclosures note that smaller, less-seasoned technology companies tend to be more volatile than the overall market; that observation should not be generalized to every company or every technology fund.

Risks both sectors share

  • Equity-market exposure: Share prices can decline because of recessions, interest-rate changes, credit conditions, investor sentiment or events unrelated to the fund’s sector.
  • Concentration risk: A common shock can affect many holdings simultaneously. A fund with a few dominant positions has more single-company exposure than one with a broad, even-weighted portfolio.
  • Strategy risk: Index rules, active-management decisions, thematic screens, derivatives, leverage and rebalancing schedules can produce different outcomes within the same sector.
  • Implementation costs: Expense ratios, bid-ask spreads, commissions where applicable, taxes and trading turnover reduce an investor’s realized result.
  • Distribution uncertainty: Dividends or other fund distributions can change with company cash flows and portfolio turnover. A price chart that excludes reinvested distributions is not the same as a total-return result.

Prospectuses describe these exposures but cannot establish a reliable forecast of which sector will lead over a future period. The fund’s holdings, weights and rules determine how broad sector conditions reach an individual shareholder.

Why there is no universal returns winner

Energy and technology have led at different times because their earnings respond to different economic forces. A period of rising fuel prices can benefit some energy companies, while a period of strong demand for digital products can benefit some technology companies. The reverse can also occur. Interest rates, economic growth, inventories, supply constraints, innovation and regulation can change the leadership order.

Even a correct sector-level observation may not describe a particular fund. Two energy funds can differ in exploration versus infrastructure exposure, geographic mix, market capitalization and leverage. Two technology funds can differ in mature profitable companies versus smaller high-growth businesses. A return comparison that ignores those differences can attribute a fund’s result to the wrong cause.

One State Street SPDR Series Trust filing reports a highest quarterly return of 12.85% in the fourth quarter of 2021, a lowest quarterly return of -16.14% in the second quarter of 2022 and a year-to-date return of 13.58% through September 30, 2025 for a named fund. The queried prospectus identifies the fund as the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ESG ETF. These figures belong only to that fund, its stated periods and its filing; they are not an energy-versus-technology comparison, a current quote or evidence of a category winner. The filing also cautions that past performance is not necessarily an indication of future performance.

How to compare an energy fund with a technology fund fairly

1. Define the comparison universe

Record each fund’s legal name, ticker, domicile, share class and structure. Confirm whether it is a broad sector-index fund, an active fund, a thematic fund, an infrastructure strategy, a leveraged or inverse product, or another specialized vehicle. Comparing unlike structures can make a numerical result misleading.

2. Read the objective and index methodology

Find the fund’s current prospectus or official fact sheet and identify the target index or active mandate. Note inclusion rules, market-cap weighting, equal weighting, rebalancing frequency, foreign-company limits and any derivatives or sampling techniques. These rules explain why two funds carrying the same sector label may hold different companies.

3. Measure concentration before looking at returns

Item to record Why it matters
Number of holdings Fewer holdings generally leave more of the result dependent on individual companies.
Largest five and ten positions A high top-holding weight can dominate volatility and performance.
Industry or subsector weights Energy funds may emphasize exploration, equipment, utilities or infrastructure; technology funds may emphasize software, semiconductors, hardware or services.
Geographic exposure Foreign revenue, currencies, local regulation and political conditions can change results.
Market-cap mix Smaller companies can have less diversified revenues and greater price volatility.

4. Use identical dates and a consistent return definition

Choose the same start and end dates for both funds. State whether the figures are price returns or total returns with distributions reinvested. Use annualized returns for periods of different lengths and identify the currency. A one-year result for one fund cannot fairly be compared with a five-year result for another.

5. Include fees and trading effects

Obtain the current expense ratio from each fund’s official documents rather than assuming funds in the same sector cost the same. Consider bid-ask spreads, brokerage charges, turnover-related taxes and any premium or discount to net asset value. Gross index performance and an investor’s after-cost result are different measures.

6. Examine volatility and drawdowns

Average return alone does not show the path an investor had to endure. Compare standard deviation or another clearly defined volatility measure, the largest peak-to-trough decline, recovery time and the frequency of negative periods. Use matching observations and disclose whether the figures are calculated from daily, weekly or monthly data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Separate income from capital appreciation

Energy-related companies may distribute meaningful cash in some periods, while technology companies may reinvest more heavily or return cash through buybacks. Compare total return when the goal is wealth accumulation, and examine distribution consistency separately when cash income matters. Do not treat a high recent distribution as guaranteed.

8. Check the data date

Holdings, weights, expenses and index membership change. Label every figure with its as-of date and verify it against the current prospectus or fact sheet before making a decision. Historical numbers from an older filing can remain accurate for that filing while no longer describing the current portfolio.

Interpreting volatility, drawdowns and risk-adjusted results

Volatility measures how widely prices have moved, not whether the movement was caused by commodity shocks, product news or market-wide selling. A technology fund holding mature, profitable companies may be less volatile than a fund focused on small emerging businesses. An energy infrastructure fund with contracted revenues may behave differently from an exploration-heavy fund during a commodity-price shock.

A drawdown shows the loss from a previous peak to a subsequent low. It answers a practical question that an average return cannot: how much capital could have been lost before recovery? Recovery time adds another dimension. A fund that eventually posts a strong five-year return may still be unsuitable for an investor who cannot tolerate a prolonged decline.

Risk-adjusted statistics such as Sharpe or Sortino ratios can help summarize the trade-off between return and variability, but they depend on the chosen period, benchmark and risk-free rate. They should supplement, not replace, an examination of holdings and the events that drove the result.

How strategy changes the energy-versus-technology comparison

Fund type Questions to ask Potentially distinctive exposure
Broad energy index fund How are companies weighted, and which subsectors dominate? Commodity-price sensitivity, producers, equipment, services or utilities depending on the index.
Active energy infrastructure fund How does the manager select projects and finance-related holdings? Construction, acquisition, throughput or volume, regulation, financing and distribution risks.
Broad technology index fund How concentrated are the largest technology companies? Product cycles, valuation changes, intellectual-property and competition risks.
Narrow technology theme fund What qualifies a company for inclusion, and how many holdings meet it? Greater dependence on one technology, supply chain, application or regulatory outcome.
Leveraged or inverse product What is the reset interval and stated objective? Path dependence and compounding effects that can make long-term results diverge sharply from a simple multiple of the sector return.

The last row is especially important: a product designed for a short-term multiple or inverse exposure is not a like-for-like substitute for an unleveraged sector fund.

Matching a fund to an investor’s role and time horizon

Core portfolio exposure

A sector fund generally represents a concentrated allocation rather than a complete portfolio. An investor using one as a core holding should examine how much additional diversification is needed across industries, regions, company sizes and asset classes. The more concentrated the fund, the more important the rest of the portfolio becomes.

Satellite allocation

A smaller satellite position can be evaluated by its purpose: exposure to a specific industry view, a diversification objective within an existing portfolio or a source of income. The position size should reflect the possibility that the thesis is wrong and that the sector may lag for an extended period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorter horizons

Short holding periods make entry valuation, news events and market timing more influential. A sector fund can experience a substantial interim loss even when its long-run business case remains intact. Money needed on a fixed schedule should not be exposed to a risk level that could force a sale during a drawdown.

Longer horizons

Longer periods allow compounding to matter, but they do not guarantee recovery or erase concentration risk. Companies can lose their competitive position, regulations can change and an index can evolve. Reassess the fund’s mandate and holdings rather than assuming a long horizon makes any sector allocation safe.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Declaring a winner from one strong year: Use several matched periods and explain the economic conditions during them.
  • Comparing a narrow theme with a broad sector: Label the difference in scope and holdings before interpreting results.
  • Using price return for one fund and total return for the other: Apply the same distribution treatment to both.
  • Ignoring concentration: A sector label does not reveal how much the largest positions drive the fund.
  • Quoting stale figures: Holdings, expenses and index rules need an as-of date and current-source check.
  • Treating prospectus risks as forecasts: A disclosed risk is a possible exposure, not a prediction that a loss will occur.
  • Assuming all energy funds track fuel prices equally: Infrastructure contracts, utilities, equipment makers and producers can respond differently.
  • Assuming all technology funds are high-growth portfolios: Mature companies, smaller firms and narrow themes have different growth and volatility profiles.

A practical research checklist

  1. Write down each fund’s objective, benchmark or active mandate and product structure.
  2. Download the current prospectus and fact sheet for both funds.
  3. Record holdings, top-position weights, subsector allocation, geography and market-cap mix as of the same date.
  4. Record expense ratios and identify any unusual trading, derivative or distribution features.
  5. Calculate or obtain matched-period total returns, annualized returns, volatility and maximum drawdown.
  6. Annotate major periods with the relevant drivers, such as commodity-price changes, supply disruptions, product-cycle shifts, regulatory actions or broad market moves.
  7. Test whether the proposed allocation duplicates exposure already held elsewhere.
  8. Set a review rule for changes in mandate, concentration, costs or personal time horizon.

This process produces a comparison that can be updated when the funds change. It also makes clear which conclusions come from observed data and which are judgments about future conditions.

Bottom line for the energy-versus-technology question

Energy funds usually carry more direct sensitivity to fuel markets, supply and demand, geopolitical disruption, regulation and capital-intensive projects. Technology funds usually carry more sensitivity to innovation speed, product obsolescence, competition, intellectual property, regulation and uncertain growth expectations. Those are different risk patterns, not a ranking from “safe” to “risky.”

To decide how the categories differ for a specific investment, compare comparable funds on the same dates, with the same return definition, after considering holdings, concentration, fees, volatility, drawdowns and distributions. Historical performance can inform that analysis, but it cannot establish which sector will deliver the higher future return.
